It's Time to Name Baby L-127!
You can now vote in the naming contest for L-127. After receiving a name, she will be available in the Orca Adoption Program.
The choices are;
Cordelia (daughter of the sea in Greek mythology)
Alcyone (Name of Captain Jacques-Yves Cousteau’s 2nd research boat, which partially used wind as an energy source for the motors)
Scuba (in collaboration with Emile Gagnan and Cousteau’s wife, Simone, the first Aqua Lung, or dive regulator, was born).
Vote for your favourite name by emailing [email protected]. Voting ends on November 29th, 2023.
L-126 / Ken
The first offspring of Joy / L-119, born in June this year, has been named Ken, in honor of the late Ken Balcomb, founder of the Center for Whale Research.
Feeling some kind of way about Tokitae's death, and watching Li'i be ignored like some kind of acceptable collateral damage... No. Not having it.
🫠
Agreed.
hello again 👋
I think my health has improved enough that I can actually be active around here
also I will try to fix my page's coding soon I am sorry about that mess lmao
oh no yes I’m back
I've been polite about this for 17 years
no more
among those who I consider responsible for the fate of the southern resident killer whales:
DFO Royal Canadian Navy NOAA US Navy Bonneville Power marine park industry Orca Task Force
bureaucracy, half measures, not respecting the researchers who ACTUALLY KNOW what they're talking about, and placing the blame where it doesn't belong

do you, reader, want to help?...

Malia’s jaw seems to be getting better. Couldn’t really see the patches on her belly though.
So, question; With Malia’s skin issue comes Seaworld’s most recent and seriously-blatant lie to the public, ‘diatoms.’ Has anyone seen any pro-captive or pro-park folk so much as bat an eyelash at that? Because let’s be real, nobody should be happy with a BS answer like that, and it really does highlight how willing SW is to simply lie.
Especially when apparently the temperature change they made in the orca tanks is /warmer/. Diatoms only live in polar conditions and all y'all wanna bitch about is birth control and the temperature change and both of those are bullshit answers. Malia’s trainers have supposedly said that the discoloration IS and infection, they just don’t know wether it is bacterial or fungal yet.
I feel like more people should be talking about Malia, because it seems like she’s getting worse. x
I was just going to post this… poor dear :/
Oh no!
I hope this doesn’t get any more serious, does anyone know if she’s lost any weight or is more lethargic than usual?
Oh my God. Look at the discoloration, why in Christ’s name is she still performing.
I think Kasatka was performing almost up until being put down (just a few days prior?) So that should give us a hint about why-performing, I guess. x_x
2 days before. The video was taken down but I still have it.
Wow, I didn’t think it was *that* close.
Honestly it’s really, really messed up that an animal goes from “being paraded in front of an audience” to “euthanized for terminal health concerns” in two whole days.
Tbh she didn’t look terminal but well… we’ll never know
SeaWorld responded to a message on Facebook about her. x
It’s good to know she’s still behaving normally, but that response isn’t exactly sitting well with me. (Also they forgot to link the article lmao)
I’m curious if they are implying that Malia is affected by algal diatoms because uh
Wow they’re really going for the diatom explanation?
Orca in Antarctica are stained yellow/brown because of the high concentration in the antarctic water. The filtration system for Shamu Stadium should be removing the majority of the diatoms to keep the water clear so its not an equivalent situation.
And why is only Malia effected? The other whales would show some staining too if they had an overall diatom problem?
Its unusual and there is nothing in the literature discussing such extensive diatom staining in captive cetaceans. Diatoms aren’t known to cause any health issues so if that is the case then Malia should be fine. However if she has some underlying issue making her more susceptible to diatom films that might be a problem for her.
This whole situation screams dodgy.
There’s no way that those are diatoms. That water is not cold enough for diatoms to thrive in abundance, enough to form a diatom film on an animal. It also would be effecting all the orcas, not just Malia, so I’m calling that huge bullshit.
Watch and see if they don’t put something up in a few weeks about how Malia is sick and the vets are doing their best to save her with the ‘this happens in the wild!!1!1’ sprinkles on top.
@derangedhyena-delphinidae @endcetaceanexploitation @merciresolution @teamorkid
To further disprove the diatom theory. There is clearly something very wrong with Malia’s skin.
Eugh.
I don’t have anything nice to say about this situation. I guess we’ll know more if poor Malia gets worse/drops dead or not. Because ‘diatoms.’

NAGOYA AQUARIUM planning to produce HYBRID orcas
The Japanese aquarium is home to 32-year-old Stella, 5-year-old daughter Lynn (Rin), and Stella's 9-year-old grandson Earth.
Citing international criticism of Taiji - where two of the aquarium's previous killer whales came from - Nagoya indicated that it's become difficult to obtain wild orcas to expand the gene pool, and there's a subsequent fear of the disappearance of orcas from captive facilities in Japan.
At present, all captive orcas in Japan are related to each other.
As a result, the aquarium is launching a collaborative research effort with Chimelong Ocean Kingdom (Zhuhai) to obtain frozen sperm from the Chinese facilitiy's Russian-blooded orcas to breed with Nagoya's Icelandic whales.
Nagoya's whales are from the Icelandic herring-eating ecotype, while Chimelong's are from Russia's mammal-eating population (which are low and decreasing in number due to captures since 2012). Scientists around the world have been researching to determine appropriate classifications of all killer whales, and in the future some groups may be considered subspecies or separate species altogether.
Basic research between Nagoya and Chimelong is expected to be completed by 2020.
Previous killer whales housed at Nagoya:
- Ku (arrived October 2003 from Taiji Whaling Museum, died September 2008) - Nami (arrived June 2010 from TWM, died January 2011) - Ran 2 (arrived December 2011 from Kamogawa SeaWorld, transferred back in December 2015) - Bingo (arrived December 2011 from KSW, died August 2014)

Malia looks like she has a bad fungal infection :///// Energy and activity wise she acted completely normal, does anyone else have recent pics of her? Its a bit concerning.
Some pics from Instagram:

I’m not implying anything, but it looks exactly like Kasatka’s fungal infection. She was also reported to be ill back in October [x]
It appears to be similar to what Kayla had a little while ago, Kayla still has a tiny scar from when hers healed up.
Thanks for the pics, similar to what I’ve found already. Some show that it appears to be lightening up and others it looks darker in. Hopefully it’s nothing big, especially since it’s nearly impossible to tell just from looking at pics what’s going on with her. But just repeating: she accepted all fish, secondaries, and didn’t split or receive any LRS’s when I was there, so behavior wise she is her normal self.
Does anyone know if a necropsy report was ever published for Doublestuf? It’s been a year and I literally can’t find any information beyond what was released in the week after he passed
Any updates on him would be posted here: [x]
Unfortunately there have been no updates since December 22, 2016.
Thanks, hopefully there’ll be an update soon. I swear it didn’t take nearly this long for Nigels necropsy findings to be released
No problem. I’ve noticed that SRKW who die of blunt trauma tend go a long time before the final necropsy is published (eg. L112).
