ignorance brings chaos, not knowledge
No Where to Run, No Place to Hide || Anastasia & Rita
Rita listened and nodded along to the other womanās words, the severity of the situation making her lose her usual sarcasm. People were disappearing. Women. Tourists, locals, it didnāt seem to matter. Not to them Muggle and Wizard as well, though far be it from the smugglers to know the difference. All they saw was a young, pretty profit.Ā
And that was why she and Annie were here.Ā
Both were good at what they did, maybe too good. Both knew the risks, and yet they were here. Alone. Together. The ring was growing, those who ran it spreading its disease like a plague upon the city. They had kept it relatively quite but the frequency of the disappearances had grown, proportional to a business on the boom.Ā
It would only be a matter of time before the public found out, only a matter of time before their chance to stop thisĀ became nothing more than sand slipping between their fingertips.Ā
Rita snorted at the other womanās jibe.Ā āNot bloody likely. Weāre together now, Nott, whether either one of us likes it. We both want the credit but weāll have to figure that out afterwards, now, wonāt we?ā A hint of something washed over her, realization or bitterness, she wasnāt exactly sure. But Rita knew that what Annie was suggesting could not be done alone.Ā
Infiltrate the ring. Learn who was running the show. Get in, get out.Ā
Risky. Dangerous. But, oh, wouldnāt it be glorious?Ā
āNow, how do you suppose we get ourselves taken, hmm?ā
@missanastasianott
Could they do it? Could the two of them actually get taken and then get back out of the ring unscathed and unharmed? Was it possible that the two were leading themselves into their deaths? Yes. It was more than likely. But there were risks that needed to be taken if they wanted to find out where the center of the ring was. They needed to know how to stop the ring from becoming even bigger and taking even more lives with them. Necessary precautions.
Being a reporter meant that Annie knew that she was getting herself into before she applied for her first job. She knew that there were risks and dangerous things and people out there. But that was half of the fun, wasnāt it? To be chased by death until you finally conquer it all? It wasnāt even the fame that gave her the high. It was the chase and the thrill of beating death. It was the fact that people got to know, through her, what was really going on in the world around them.
This ring, on the other hand, was not something that Annie wanted exposed just yet, however. She didnāt want to send fear and panic into the eyes of the public. Though she wished that they would be safer, they generally were a safe group. But it wasnāt enough. Girls were still being taken. Snatched from the streets.Ā
āWe have an inside source at the Daily Prophet. If we make a deal with the witness, then we may be able to insert ourselves into the ring. We can use the witness to get his friends within the circle to target us, and then snatch us. It is not the easiest way, and it will take some coercion, but it should work,ā Annie said, her voice low.Ā āAre you in, Rita?ā
No Where to Run, No Place to Hide || Anastasia & Rita
Rita skimmed her fingers discreetly along the wall as she walked down the alley, sure in her movements yet muttering to herself all the same, spells to protect her and hide her from the prying eyes of the sheep just at the entrance of the street. The cold and the wet made herĀ rib cageĀ ache from what had been recently done to it, but she supposed it was enough of a reminder of what she had done in her haze of self-derision and a need to ground herself.
It had not taken her long to find this place, not after digging into the sources both she and Tarquin used frequently, though he was never acknowledged to anyone outside of being aĀ ārefutable source.ā She trusted his information as much as she loathedĀ receivingĀ it, loved receiving it. AĀ never-endingĀ cycle of beneficial need andĀ codependencyĀ borne of almost a decade of being in one anotherās presence nearlyĀ allowed her to go on his word alone. Nearly.Ā
She still had to be sure, wanted to know for herself that she had been right, that her hard work and diligence has paid offā¦her head whipped up from where she had idly been running a finger along the brickwork and aĀ smirk painted her red lips at the familiar silhouette she saw working its way towards her through the rain. Annie Nott. The blonde nodded her head at the other reporter curtly, watching as she shook out her hair and its mass billowed out around her face.Ā
They did not work together, were generally only tolerant of one another as far as their professional dispositions went. Otherwise, they had had no real connection. This meeting did not come as a surprise, however, nor did Mrs. Nottās try at professional courtesy. Rita matched her considering look with one of her own, the smirk still twisting her lips to something beautifully threatening.Ā
āAnnie. The same could be asked of you, though I think we both know the answer. But, no, I suppose this isnāt a section of town either of us should be seen lurking. Who knows what trouble we could get up to, hm?āĀ
Stepping back triumphantly, as she had continued trailing her fingers along the brick and found the section she had been looking for, Rita gestured for the other reporter to share in the spoils. Yes, they were competitive, but what wasnāt a bit of common courtesy between colleagues every now and again?
@missanastasianott
The ring was intense. People all over the world seemed to be missing. One by one. But no one really made the connections because it would happen randomly and intermittently. Recently, however, the people who were running the ring seemed to be getting sloppy with their actions, tending to take a few more at a time. It was all so devastating.
Those who knew about it were trying to keep it hushed. Having the general public all in a panic was not something that the news media needed. The problem was keeping people safe during that time. Small amounts of patrols were sent out later at night and incognito more often. Lurking in shadows and eying anything suspicious, usually only to find out that there was nothing going on that was in need of checking out.
The enchantment upon Annie made looking through the rain unusual. She cocked her head to the side as she gazed upon Rita.Ā āIt is not safe out here in this part of the world. But you know that.ā She let out a small smile before sighing.Ā āThis thing is getting out of control. And they are covering everything up for now.ā Her hands lightly drifted up towards her hair and pulled it back into a ponytail.Ā
āThis is more serious than the both of us realise.ā Small wrinkle lines appeared in her forehead, concentration lines.Ā āMaybe you should go.ā So what if it was an attempt to work the case alone.Ā But then she quickly thought better of it.Ā āOr maybe we could go in this together... Find out where the real head is. Go in.ā It was a terrible plan. But it was something that they couldnāt do alone. Together. Annie was going to have to get used to that. Maybe she could. She could do it.

ā do they know weāre together? ā
An eyebrow raised as he stared Annie down. Ā The woman was older than Severus by quite a few years. Ā She was part of the Prophet, a strongly ambitious woman to be sure. Ā Severus admired how quickly she had risen in the ranks of the prophet, and her interest in him was flattering. Ā There was something about her, however, that didnāt sit well with him. Ā She was rather meddlesome, and tended to stick her nose into other peopleās business when it suited her. Ā
āI donāt know who you are referring to, Mrs. Nott, but I have arrived alone, as requested.ā Ā He crossed his arms. Ā Perhaps curiosity was what had caused him to meet her here, in a muggle pub, away from prying eyes. Ā
āWhat was it you wished to discuss, madam?ā Severus took a seat across from her as he spoke, ordering a beer for himself from the waiter as he passed. Ā
She had been trained from a very young age that there were people in the world out solely to harm her or the ones she loved. Anaās parents drilled that into her head when she was growing up. She grew up with the love for her sister, but Alessandra always did everything better than Annie, and even once or twice used Annie to get ahead with what she needed, rather than care for her sister. Yes, the younger one loved her sister, but she did not trust her one bit.
But if she was going to fight a war, Ana needed to know that she could trust the ones she was fighting for and defending. There wouldnāt be anyone slipping through the cracks if she could help it. So here she sat, across from a man she hardly knew and was expected to trust. Of course she had questions, it was in her Ravenclaw and journalism nature to be wary of other people and what they were saying, finding out the truth for herself.Ā
Annie looked away, her eyes narrowing.Ā āYes I trust our Lord to make decisions on who to mark. But that does not mean that there will not be an occasional person to slip through the cracks. It happens often, and though I trust him, I do not trust others.ā She turned back towards him and cocked her head before taking a small sip of her beer.Ā āTrust is earned and not so easily given.ā
Severus maintained his gaze, trained on her eyes. Ā You could learn a lot about a person by looking at their eyes. Ā Ms. Nott sat there, clearly guarded and unwilling to waver in her intensity. Ā Severus sat back in his chair, hands clasped in his lap as he betrayed his ease. Ā Heād been under suspicion and scrutiny for most of his life. Ā There wasnāt much different in this encounter. Ā He raised an eyebrow, still curious as to why Annie had asked him here in the first place. Ā Surely not just to inquire as to his loyalty and trustworthiness. Ā
āIām glad we can agree on something, at least Mrs. Nott. Ā My trust must be arduously earned as well.ā Ā He sighed, glancing back around the pub with disinterest. Ā He was growing tired of this conversation, and had much better things to do with his time than play a mismatched game of wits with the witch before him. Ā Annie needed to get to the point, or Severus would fall asleep in his chair. Ā
āI can assure you that the Dark Lord has taken great lengths to test my loyalties. Ā He has perused my mind may times, bringing to question anything he finds distasteful, as Iām sure he has done with you. Ā I have proved eager and reliable in every mission he has sent me on. Ā If that is not enough for you to trust my motives, then I suppose weāre done here.ā Ā He took another sip of his beer, placing it rather loudly on the table. Ā āUnless there was some other reason for my summons? Ā In which case I would appreciate if we could carry on without the thinly veiled accusations.ā Ā
It wasnāt as if she was to know who was on what side. Annie had to figure it all out for herself, with small amounts of guidance and snippets of information passed down through other people. But people often lied and stretched the truth further than others were willing to find out. So she sent herself out in the real world to dig for the truth, through whatever people were willing to throw at her.
Her Lord, the person she put the most trust in at the moment, had told her that Severus Snape was one of his most loyal and trusted followers. But was she really to follow that? What did she think of it herself? The man sitting in front of her seemed just as untrustworthy as she was. The Dark Lord said that there was every reason to trust the man, and everyone that he had chosen to be on his side.
So Ana would trust him.Ā āYes, I do believe that he is in his right mind telling me to trust you. I am sorry for saying otherwise. It has just been in my experiences that people will do anything to gain trust, not always meaning it. Always an ulterior motive.ā She looked down at her hands.Ā āHe has showed me nothing other than kindness.ā The blonde took a small pause, realising how childish she sounded.Ā āAnd trusting nature my way, so therefore I must retaliate and show my trust towards you. So let us start over.ā She stuck her hand out in front of her, low and unthreatening.Ā āI am Anastasia Nott. Pleased to meet your acquaintance Severus. I have only heard good things.āĀ
