summary: you've come to the baxter building at the request of dr. richards but whilst you wait, you capture the attention of another, less scientifically-minded member of the fantastic four. [1.6k]
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
standing outside the baxter building, you couldn’t believe your luck. when your professor had mentioned that the one and only dr. reed richards- the greatest scientific mind of the century in your humble opinion- was advertising a position within his team you’d jumped at the chance. nothing you had learned in your years of study would compare with being at the side of genius and, after their defeat of galactus three years ago, you were eager to introduce some precautionary and defensive measures of your own to the legendary fantastic four.
still, even your most child-like excitement couldn’t quell the nerves bubbling in your stomach. after all, this wasn’t any ordinary interview. if you secured this position it could change lives, and not just your own. this was bigger than you, a very real and terrifying realisation that had been keeping you awake at night in the days leading up to today. you couldn’t blow it.
the doors slid open suddenly, jolting you from your spiral as someone stepped out into the street. instantly, you knew who it was. johnny storm, in all his glory, was standing in front of you. he wasn’t as tall as you had pictured him, only catching glimpses from above when he was both in high-speed motion and on fire, or on the front page of most magazines with female audiences. now, before you, he looked strikingly human, which didn’t surprise you. johnny was human, there wasn’t doubt about it, but here he seemed more flesh and blood than fire and speed. looking at you now wasn’t the hero, but rather the man.
“you’re here for reed?” the question startled you, though it shouldn’t have. of course johnny knew about the interviews. reed was his brother-in-law and he was opening their home to strangers, johnny had every right to be involved.
you nodded, standing a little taller and jutting your chin forward, eager to make a good impression on the man who could become your coworker.
“yes, i’m here for the interview. sorry, i’m a little early. i don't own a car and have a deep mistrust for public transport.”
johnny smiled, seemingly amused by your comment, though he made no attempt to respond and stepped aside, allowing you to enter the building.
“reed’s out at the moment. had to pick something up for franklin. you’re more than welcome to wait upstairs whilst he gets back.” he pointed towards a shiny-looking elevator, “here, follow me.”
he lead you over and into the lift, the doors closing behind you with a soft clunk. for a moment, all that surrounded you was the whirring of machinery as you ascended through the building.
quietly, you looked over at johnny, watching a little as he surveyed the scene out in the streets of the city. he seemed momentarily peaceful, content in the safety of his city, and it comforted you to know that the protector of your peace cared so deeply for it.
you look away as he turns back to you, letting another beat of silence pass between you before he speaks.
“how did you hear about the position?”
meeting his eyes, you give a small, polite smile.
“my professor recommended it to me. said that it sounded like something i would be interested in pursuing. i’ve always been inspired by what dr.richards does for the everyday man. i figured, why not let the everyday man do something to help him, help us.” you paused for a moment, “well, the everyday woman in this case.”
johnny smiles again, before the elevator stopped with a ding, signalling its arrival at your destination.
“smart. you seem like you know what you’re talking about.” he says, moving into an open living room. “please, make yourself at home. reed’ll be a while yet i think. sue sent him out for franklin’s very specific birthday present, and that was twenty minutes ago so at this rate he might never come back.”
you let out a soft laugh, your eyes wandering about the space.
even though it felt like you were standing in the middle of a museum the room felt as lived in as your childhood home. there were books piled next to the long, curving couch, ranging from a child’s story of butterflies to darwin’s origin of species. pictures rested on the tabletops nearby, depicting happy family scenes that had you smiling, beside yourself, brushing a delicate finger over the smiling faces of johnny, ben and a young boy you could only assume was franklin, beaming proudly from atop his uncle’s shoulders.
a clattering from the kitchen caught your attention as johnny appeared again in front of you, holding a box of cereal in his hand. he sank into the couch cushions, shovelling a handful into his mouth and motioning you to join him with a jerk of his head, blonde hair falling from its perfect quaff as he did so.
“can i ask you something?” johnny turns to you as you perch next to him on the couch, another mouthful of cereal between his teeth.
you nodded, watching the movement of his hands as he ate, catching yourself quickly and carefully redirecting your gaze to his face, waiting for him to continue.
johnny watched you for a moment, his gaze unreadable, before continuing.
“why here? of all the places you could’ve offered your no doubt brilliant mind, why choose reed? i mean he’s a total nightmare to work with, so why willingly subject yourself to that?”
pausing, you looked down at your hands, flattening them against the material of your skirt.
“ever since i can remember i’ve always had a passion for astrophysics. space and the unknown has always been a point of interest to me, but also a source of great fear. i wanted to be an astronaut until i realised i was afraid of actually going into space.” you paused for a moment, looking up and catching johnny’s eye, almost startled by the intent and overwhelmingly interested look he was giving you. you'd never had someone seem so intrigued by what you had to say before and it left you stunned for a moment, unsure of how to react to such a thoughtful gaze, especially coming from one of earth's greatest heroes.
“and i guess i wanted to make a difference," you began again, watching the way johnny's face flashes with recognition, as if you were speaking his very purpose into existence.
"i wanted to help people. i always have. i think that we all deserve to be protected and have someone to protect. through science and my studies of what’s out there," you make a vague gesture upwards. "i have a better chance of persevering what’s down here. and only dr. richards and your team have the power to really protect us, so it seemed like-” you paused again, searching for the right words to encompass the depths of your thoughts.
“it seemed like somewhere i belonged. even if i’m not someone incredibly special or important. it doesn’t matter when you’re protecting others, because suddenly your life means so much more than just you. it’s not about self-preservation anymore, but the preservation of others, of the environment that you yourself exist in. otherwise what’s the point? why call yourself a scientist, or a hero, or anything else, when you have nothing to fight for, nothing to drive your towards success.”
johnny sits in silence for a moment, eyes never straying from you.
"well shit." he murmurs, scrubbing a hand across his face and into his hair. "if you don't get the job now then reed's an idiot."
you smile a little, feeling the heat rise to your cheeks.
"thank you." you manage to say, nervous all of a sudden despite your little speech. "i'd really love to work here."
"i can tell." johnny answers, leaning back further into the couch cushions. "y'know i don't think i've ever met anyone so alike myself before. i mean we're motivated by exactly the same things but you're also so different."
your startled by that, tilting your head to the side as you look at him.
johnny goes pale and then bright red, spluttering for a second.
"no! i didn't- i meant- different! not bad different. good different. nice different." he pauses, burying his head in his hands, a sound of pure mortification coming from him.
you smile, calmed by the fact he seemed as nervous as you did.
"and here i thought you knew how to talk to women." you teased lightly, smiling at him as he looks at you, slack- jawed.
"i know how to talk to women thank you very much." he pouts a little, puffing out his chest slightly, regaining that 'johnny storm charm' you'd heard so much about.
"just not wildly confusing ones like you apparently."
you smile again, ready to respond when the elevator dings again, catching your attention as reed comes barrelling into the space.
he catches your eye and pauses for a moment, the look on his face telling you he was trying to work out what you were doing in his home.
"hi, i'm your 3.15 meeting dr.richards." all your schooled professionalism returns to your frame as you stand, reaching your hand out in front of you.
recognition passes through reed as he meets you in the middle, shaking your hand with practised ease.
"yes, of course. sorry about the delay. shall we?" he gestures back towards the elevator and you nod, casting a glance over your shoulder as you do so, catching johnny's eye and smiling lightly.
"thank you johnny," you say. "for keeping me company."
"oh don't sweat it." he replies with ease, swatting a hand out in front of him, his gaze flickering between you and reed, very obviously calculating something in his mind.
"i have a feeling we'll be seeing each other soon."

this has the potential of becoming a mini-series but i'm not making any promises. however much i love johnny storm fics i find him so difficult to write for because i'm just getting into fantastic four.
