Unexpected Reunions
“And if you know what’s good for you, don’t come back again!”
A small scowl tugged at her lips as the cafe door was all but slammed in her face, and for several seconds Miyako felt the eyes of passerby on her before they deemed the brief spectacle unworthy of further attention and moved on.
This was the third establishment this week that had turned her away--not for any valid or justifiable reason, but for merely existing in Hive City. Recent weeks had seen an inexplicable change in the behavior of the city’s natives toward "outsiders,” and though she had been fortunate enough not to have encountered more violent expressions of the sentiment thus far, it made the current state of affairs no less baffling. She had visited this same business on more than one occasion in the past, and at each time she had been welcomed as any other patron would be. Now, though...
Miyako let out a quiet sigh and turned to leave, rubbing her temples warily as she attempted to expel the mild headache incoming through sheer force of will alone. Ah, well. Given the cafe owner’s sudden change in attitude, there was little point in lingering here any longer.
--...was her thought, at least, until she moved to turn the corner and, in an uncharacteristic and frankly embarrassing show of obliviousness, very nearly collided with another person. It wasn’t just any person, either--not if that mess of black hair or pair of trailing “rabbit ears” were anything to go by.
“... You.”
