“I mean, I’ve never had too bad of a disaster. Garnet, on the other hand...we don’t let her in the kitchen anymore. But I should be fine.”

“Oh...no. I don’t. I just...your hair is gorgeous. I mean...do you dye it that color? Or is it natural?”

“Uh, are you sure you know what you’re doing?”

“Oh, yes. I’ve made this recipe a million times before. I’m sure it will be fine.”

“I guess. I mean, yeah, sure. I’m just use to more.. lowkey Christmases with my mother. She hasn’t exactly met my roommates yet. Just have to pray it’s not awkward.”

“Just because you have a couple of roommates doesn’t mean it will be highkey. But good luck. I’m sure everything will work out, the holidays usually do.”

“Nice wasn’t the intention. There’s no harm in costumes, though they are odd.. it’s the ‘trick-or-treat’ that irks me. Christmas I like.. Even if I have two extra mouths to feed this year.”  

“I mean, it’s over now. Not like you need to worry about it, right? And Christmas is right around the corner. Won’t it be nice to have a few more people to share the Christmas cheer with?”

“Sorry sorry, are you alright, that was completely my fault I got distracted, are you okay? You’re not hurt are you?”

“Hey, hey, it’s okay. I’m alright, I promise. It takes a lot more than that to hurt me. Are you okay?”

“That’s true–you are pretty tall,” she giggled. “I did try some coffee once–it was bitter, so I never actually got into it. How can people drink that stuff like, every day? Plus, I’m so afraid that it’ll ruin my day because I’ll get like, a caffeine crash or something, and then I won’t be able to stay awake for the rest of the day. That happens, right?”

“That’s why you put sugar in it, silly,” Pearl said with a laugh. She drank hers with only a little sugar and cream, but could see why others loaded it full of flavors. “That does happen, but it’s not that extreme. You just get a little tired most of the time. I’ve never fallen asleep because of a caffeine crash, but that’s just me. I’m sure if you don’t drink too much coffee, you’ll be fine. But don’t tell your father I said that. I don’t want him mad at me,” she said with a shrug.

“No offence, ma’am, but if I had knocked on my neighbours’ doors asking for candy when I was a child I would have earned myself a lecture, fifty push-ups, and a mark on my record. Sweet or not. I will let them ‘live their lives’, but I will not be participating.”

“It doesn’t sound like you lived in a very nice neighborhood. But to each their own. I just love seeing all the costumes, what’s the harm in that? And then after Halloween comes Christmas!”

“Well, good for you! Just let the kids live their lives, though. I don’t know where you’ve gotten that idea. They’ve all seemed sweet to me.”

“I don’t understand the point of this holiday, or how hypocritical the whole mindset of it is. Besides, like hell I’m paying for someone else’s kid’s sugar addiction.” 

“Cheer up. It’s the one day you could be anything you could ever want to be. And sure, buying candy kind of sucks, but imagine the smiles on their faces!”

“Yes, of course! I still haven’t gotten any candy for the trick or treaters at our house yet....”

“I guess I’m just more familiar with tea, ‘cause that’s what I’ve been drinking all my life. I’m pretty glad they don’t have any pumpkin-flavored tea though–actually, I hate anything pumpkin-flavored–I’m surprised it’s selling so well! How many pumpkins do you think were used in making all those drinks?”

“Oh, I”m sure I could find you pumpkin flavored tea if I tried hard enough. There’s pumpkin flavored everything, my friend. I even saw pumpkin flavored oatmeal. They probably don’t use any pumpkin, honestly. It’s all fake. Which is a little sad.”

“It is.” She agrees, smiling and replying, “Thank ya! So many people say there’s not a wrong way to make hot tea.” She chuckles and shakes her head. “Ya can’t just drink lightly steeped, it’s just not right.”

“People actually say that? It’s not worth it most of the time. I can never get it right. At least coffee is kind of hard to screw up.”

“Well, I don’t drink coffee normally, so I dunno what I’m supposed to like. My father never let me drink any, actually… he said coffee would make me short, that’s why I should only drink tea instead. And well, I bought this, so I might as well drink it anyway. So, what do you usually get from Starbucks then?”

“Hmm. I’ve heard that too, and I don’t think it’s stunted my growth at all. I mean, I lived on coffee when I was a teenager. But to each their own. Tea isn’t bad if you make it correctly. I just get a plain coffee, which is probably extremely boring. But I can’t stand all of the sweetened coffees. It makes it taste...horrible.”
