The bell rang just then, and Winnie gave him a withering look. “You’re going to make me late for class, Richard. Is that your M.O.?” She abruptly stopped, cutting herself off before she said something she knew she’d truly regret. She took a big breath, centering herself by waving her hand in front of her own face. “If you really mean all that,” she began, “then prove it to me.” Off his look, she continued, “I don’t know how, but you’ll figure it out.”
