Like, I'm sitting here thinking that if Niall didn't lie and fake his way through most his life, he wouldn't have gotten drunk off finally saying what was on his mind. Because that's what happened. He felt 100% safe around and accepted by Ruben for the first time in his life and that gave him such a high he fucked it all up instantly. If he had time to bask in that safety and acceptence then he would've known how to love properly. I mean yeah no shit that's the point of the show, he wouldn't have fucked Mona in the first place if he loved himself.

But it's beautiful how his character is written, it's not on the nose like so much other media but you get it instantly.

Okay but Ruben's behavior right after Niall broke the Big News™ to him is a masterclass in writing imo. His psychology is fully on display and it's so bizarre and morbid how he reacts but you get it because now you know why. On top of his childhood SA, he's infertile as well - maybe as a direct result, all the drugs he did to try and cope. Maybe it's just misfortune. Bane of his fucking existence either way, and there's no one to challenge him on his shitty, incredibly harmful views about masculinity because he doesn't let anyone get a word in.

Ruben is so wretchedly pathetic and infuriating and the only man who could get through to him is also wretchedly pathetic and infuriating. The way these two destroy the lives of the women around them with their insecurities and their pointless rivalry. The way it keeps unraveling, we're on ep five and everything keeps getting clearer but to no avail because we know where it's going. It's genuinely like watching a trainwreck.

I'm gonna make a post about it since I saw someone else bring it up (albeit about a different scene).

A theory I had and had brushed off was that Half Man was playing like Mulholland Drive. One series of happenings with Diane that did happen, tragic and heartbreaking. Another reality that we started the movie with, of Betty, the beautiful, dreamlike wish.

The sad, painful, tragic story we have been seeing in past feels a bit in contrast with the heightened, almost fantastic looking, fairytale setting of the marriage. Even with Ruben menacingly showing up and assaulting Niall, feels different to me somehow. What if one is reality and another one what Niall wishes did happen or maybe how the book unfolds.

I dismissed the thought when I first had it, thinking it was me being cowardly about their deaths and coping with that, trying to come up with scenarios to undo the death scenes lol

But if it somehow happened, I wouldn't be surprised.
