omg could you tell i had been thinking about this a lot
well first and foremost, i recently read cathedrals of erotic misery by alberto toscano and have since started dagmar herzog’s sex after fascism because it turns out this is a subject i find quite interesting actually, and this is probably coloring my analysis. that said, dedra is a pretty damn complex character, so i don’t think you can just apply the ideas being written about here to her one-to-one and have it cohere.
i’m a star wars casual, so forgive me if there’s lore i’m missing that might fill in the blanks, BUT as portrayed in andor, i couldn’t glean if the social aspects of imperial control put much emphasis on sexual norms, and yet i find it implausible that this arena of public life would go unaffected, and even more implausible that this wouldn’t affect the psychology of its most devoted adherents. so, fundamentally, i see dedra as being extremely out of touch with her own desires (save those tied to her career, i.e. service to empire), which i’m pretty confident would make her stilted and awkward around sex
the trope of authoritarian women being like, sexy dominatrixes in bed is a common fantasy for understandable reasons (hot) but given the severity of andor’s writing around the subject, i’d much rather continue to characterize her along those lines. so like. as badly as i want her to peg her little boyfriend, realistically i find it hard to imagine her identifying, accepting, then acting on this non-normative desire within herself (if not out of her aggressive conformity, then certainly out of her aversion to vulnerability)– while the power dynamics in this relationship clearly favor her given both her Literal authority over him and her domineering personality, i don’t think this would translate neatly into a codified dom/sub thing despite them both clearly getting something out of that aspect of their relationship. i think it mostly just makes their attempts to perform Normal Heterosexuality in spite of this really fucking odd
