Right at ten am Hollow Diner was bustling with a mixture of the post breakfast, pre lunch crowd and a few new faces as well. Noise and voices bounced along the walls and it took every last functioning brain cell Nora had to keep up and stay awake. She’d been up since the day before, picking up a late shift, right before her morning volunteer hours at the church. She only had enough time to gulp down one burning hot cup of coffee before starting her second shift.
Like a puppet on autopilot, in one fluid motion Nora swings her apron over her head, rounding the corner of the kitchen and approaching her first customer. She pops her notepad in her mouth, finishing off the knot right as she reaches the booth. A quick brush of the hair in her face and she grabs the notepad and a coffee pot nearby. “Sorry ‘bout the wait.” Nora smiles quick, “coffee?” She’s pouring before they can answer. It’s usually a yes. “And anything to eat?”
