Iyaiya(?)

Anyway...
Happy SheX'mas !!
Just a mini tutorial someone asked me to make for them. Figured I’d share it here as well.
Iyaiya(?)
Iyami, Yoshiyuki Kishi version. I could have tried to track him through all the episodes like with Abe and Masutani’s work, but this sums up that evolution.
He isn’t always with the dot eyes in 76, but they happen frequently enough. Look at how short he got though!
Iyami, Hiroshi Kawabata version. Episodes 1, 56, and 83 to compare.
Iyami, Motosuke Takahashi version. Selected from episodes 15, 61, and 82.
Iyami by Masami Abe, part 2 (66-86). By the end, Iyami has completed his transformation.
Same character, same director. Wow…
Just for a refresher in looking back-
Episode 2, aired 2/20/1988:
86, aired 12/30/1989:
And it’s not exclusive to Abe, but it jumps out so much for example of how the characters change. I feel like everyone decided at a point to go looser and wackier with the character designs, which isn’t inherently a bad thing. Just that when you finish it up, you can really see how some character design changes are either subtler or much more dramatic.
Part 1.
Iyami from episodes by Masami Abe, part 1 (2-50). Same animation director, but Iyami’s evolving into the squatter and toonier look by the last examples.
7 is just too good for expressions and views for some of the cast in general, and 12 is another good early one. Of course, watching the episodes will give you the full experience of the designs and animation than what stills can.
Iyami, by Saburo Masutani. It doesn’t take long for the squished-down Iyami design to become the norm in his style.
I do like the shiny dot eye moments in 62 a lot!
