Spiritually, 3 am is the darkest hour of the night. The people who stay up late but not insanely late have gone to bed, people who wake up early but not insanely early are yet to wake up. The only people who are awake are the night shift, and the insane.

Anything but a major city is desolate at that hour if you're walking the streets. They're quiet and empty. The world on skeleton crew. There's a lighted window here and there and no idea what goes on within. If you see someone else you'll go wider even if there's a block between you. Cause there's only the night shift, the insane, and the dangerous out here and you're both wondering which one the other person is.

that the childhood they had

struggling to find lost pieces

an “adulthood” that never truly was

posing as a lie told to each of us

generation after generation

unraveling at the feet of the very first two

begging beneath the tree

eyes wet with tears, cast above,

Either holding the blood and the body

Or the ashes of a friend

every winter

the flowers sleep underneath the ice

but they trust that when it warms again

they’ll experience the same life

over and over and over

until the bulb itself

uproots or departs

either by force of nature or man

unaware that this winter is the last

and the flower

will never bloom again

that blesses this land,

that reminds us to pray,

melts into the core of my being—

bringing holy fire to the surface,

that bubbles and burns within my chest,

stuck behind my ribs, caged secretly, waiting patiently.
