Touchdown
Mitzi woke up one bright fall morning to the sound of birds chirping outside. She had to get ready for her first class of the day, Design Development, a great way to start off that day. Mitzi put on her Oklahoma Sooner sweater, got breakfast and headed out to class. The day was crisp and cool like a fresh fall apple. She walked into the big classroom with rows of chairs and desks that gently ascend up to the back of the room like a movie theatre. In the front row a boy with dark brown eyes smiled at Mitzi as she walked to about the middle of the class room and sat in her seat.
The classes passed by and Mitzi got her things together to go to cheerleading, meeting her friend Sky on the way. The two of them walked to cheerleading practice. The boy from earlier walked by, singing while walking, he looked over at the girls and stops singing for a second, then smiled and kept going. Mitzi hoped that the boy was smiling at her but she wasn’t too sure. Sky hadn’t even noticed, she was telling Mitzi about her new song she had just written. Mitzi watched as the boy kept walking on. She wondered to herself who this was, and why her heart skipped when he paused for a second while looking her way.
The next morning Mitzi did her usual routine but this time with a little more pep. She was looking forward to class, to maybe seeing this dapper young man again. She walked with a little skip in her step fuelled by her anticipation. When she walked in the boy was sitting in his usual seat right by the door in the front row. He smiled and said hi as Mitzi walked in. She was shocked for a second, but Mitzi was still polite and said “Hello, how are you?”. They briefly talked then class was to begin so Mitzi had to go back in the classroom to her seat. They exchanged names and now Mitzi knew that this alluring boy was named Anthony. Mitzi couldn’t stop looking over at Anthony. Anthony couldn’t stop thinking about the girl he had just met. He had seen her around and thought that her beauty compared to no one, her cerulean eyes and skin like porcelain. Anthony knew he had to make her his, but how? She was way out of his league.
They talked a little more after class. They exchanged phone numbers and went their separate ways for the day. The next day they talked a little more, each day they talked more and more getting to know each other little by little. Anthony found out Mitzi was a cheerleader, and also an amazing dancer. Mitzi found out Anthony played football and wrestled. They both knew they had to be with each other, but no one said anything. Around a week after they first had spoken to each other Anthony decided that he must ask Mitzi out. He was nervous, Mitzi was just so sweet and he couldn’t stand the possibility that she would say no. At their lunch break Anthony asked Mitzi if she wanted to go for a little walk. They strolled around campus while chatting. As they started to head back Anthony said “This was nice, do you want to bring a picnic next time and go down to the river?” Mitzi thought that sounded great! Her heart felt like it skipped several beats during Anthony’s words. She couldn’t wait for tomorrow’s lunch. The next day at lunch Mitzi practically ran to where Anthony said he was going to meet her. Romance was around the corner and she could feel it. When she got there Anthony was there with a bouquet of red, white and pink roses. Mitzi brought the food. They sat by the river and talked until it was time to go back to class.
A few days later Mitzi saw a poster for a carnival downtown. Mitzi tells Anthony about it and they decide to go the first evening it is open. The night is cool, carnival games light up along the sides of the road making a runway with the ferris wheel at the end, crowing the whole scene. They play the games and ride on the rides. Anthony and Mitzi get funnel cakes, and cotton candy. They both have so much fun. They make their way to the end of the street that the carnival is on. Anthony asks Mitzi if she’d like to go on the ferris wheel. They go and wait in line to get on. It feels like floating in mid air. Around and around they go. The ferris wheel stops at the very top, Anthony and Mitzi are left, swinging back and forth as the mechanics come in and try to fix it. You can see the whole carnival from up there, the sky like a crystal blanket over the runway. Anthony and Mitzi admire the beauty for a little. Mitzi suddenly second guesses if this was a date or not, meanwhile Anthony was almost wondering the same thing. Anthony turns to Mitzi out of the blue and says “I love you”. Mitzi’s heart feels like it’s swelling up and a wave of emotions rushes over her. She says “I love you, too”. Anthony brushes his hand along Mitzi’s face, Mitzi’s almost cartoon like eyes look up to Anthony and they both lean in to kiss.
Anthony and Mitzi start dating. Everyday at lunch they walk down to the river where they had their first date, and they eat together. They go for walks in the parks and eat at their favourite restaurants. The whole school knows they’re the cutest couple and everyone loves them together.
A few months later the school hosted a Winter Ball. All black tie, it was the most sophisticated event of the year. At the first chance Anthony got 2 tickets for him and his sweetheart. He wants this to be as special as Mitzi is to him. During their daily walk to the river Anthony asked Mitzi to go to the ball with him. Mitzi of course says “yes” because any time she spent with Anthony was the best time. The date of the ball came up. Mitzi got ready putting her hair up into a low and twisting bun with several braids around it, carefully doing her makeup to have golden smoky eyes, with luscious lashes and dark red lips to match the dress. She put on the dress that had taken her a long time to decide on. It was floor length and dark red, form fitting yet flared out towards the ground, the upper bodice in a floral lace with a plunge neckline. Anthony pulled up in a limousine he had rented, when Mitzi walked out of the house Anthony’s jaw almost hit the floor. “You are so bomb, babe” Anthony said, because he was practically speechless. They both got into the limo and the driver took them to a restaurant on the lake. The views were beautiful as the sun was setting. They had a peaceful and romantic dinner, then once they were done it was off to the ball. They danced all through the night, never leaving each others side, Swaying along the dance floor with lots of grace. Mitzi’s heart felt so full of love as Anthony guided her around the dance floor, Anthony smiled as he thought of how blessed he was to be holding an angel in his arms.
The night had come to a close, the couple got back into the limo, feet aching from all the dancing but they didn’t notice because they were far too happy to let small things bother them. It starts to rain and Anthony and Mitzi watched through the moonroof as the drops poured from the sky. There was a weird sound coming from the vehicle, then suddenly it stopped. The driver got out in the downpour to take a look at the car. He can’t find what is the problem so he calls the mechanic. Anthony and Mitzi have to wait while the mechanic is on his way. While they’re standing in the rain waiting, Anthony pulls Mitzi in close, they start to Waltz around the car in the rain, laughing the whole time in each others arms. As they spin around Anthony says to Mitzi “There is no one else in the world I can possibly imagine being with” “There is no one I would rather be with” said Mitzi, Anthony picked her up while they spun and he dipped her and they kissed. The mechanic shows up and fixes the limousine. It was very late at night and Mitzi and Anthony were very tired, they both kept falling asleep during the ride home. They pulled up to Mitzi’s house, Anthony walked her up to her door, they kissed once more for the night and Anthony went back to the limo, looking back a few times at Mitzi as she walked into her house.
Mitzi smiles as she remembers all those amazing times. She looks around at the faces of her and Anthony’s friends and family, gathered around to celebrate the love between them. She looked up at Anthony, he was smiling so much, more than she had ever seen him smile before. Mitzi knew this was where she wanted her life to go, with her favourite person in the world, her best friend, someone she had gone through so much with and knew she couldn’t go without. Anthony puts his hands out and Mitzi puts her hands in his. The priest is reading the vows, Anthony puts the ring on Mitzi’s finger and Mitzi does the same to him. A few tears of happiness roll down her cheek, Anthony wipes them off. “I now pronounce you husband and wife, you may kiss the bride” Mitzi almost jumps into Anthony’s arms, he lifts her up a little bit as they kiss and everyone cheers, they both turn and walk back down the aisle while everyone congratulates them and wishes them the best.
And they lived happily ever after.
