Getting water on the island was quite the hassle when nobody bothered to help. Piggy only declined, stating his ass-mar was an issue and the hunters were off doing God knows what (and Ralph sure knew it wasn’t the fire). The other boys either gave up on their jobs or never did them to begin with. This left Ralph with one option, Simon.

Simon wasn’t a bad kid, but he definitely wasn’t the greatest company to be around… He was well, batty and queer, the kind of kid you wouldn’t get caught dead talking to at school or even in public. Alas, Simon was the only one willing and capable of going with Ralph and Ralph himself was getting desperate.

The two boys quietly trekked up and round mounds of dirt and tree roots. Ralph had noticed Simon looking at him quite often, yet had never said anything about it, not willing to make the whole walk more awkward than it already was. Simon was having another one of his staring moments, until tripping and falling on a larger root that blended into the ground. Ralph tried (and succeeded) to hold in a laugh as he helped Simon up. Simon lightly blushed and laughed it off with a quiet chuckle.

Upon arriving to the lagoon, Simon became rather chatty with Ralph. Ralph didn’t contribute much to the conversation as he really didn’t know what to say. Simon was speaking about a whole bunch of nonsense he kinda didn’t have time for. He scooped water into coconut shells until he felt a warm hand on his shoulder.

“Ralph,” it said, “you’ll be okay.” Ralph turned around to see that it was only Simon. Despite how creepy the situation seemed, to Ralph there was nothing creepy to it. It was comforting the same way being tucked in by your mother felt or a warm home cooked meal on a cold day. It felt… holy and welcoming. Simon smiled at Ralph before continuing to draw water from the lagoon.

Ralph was a bit dazed and had to let his mind buffer for a moment. Simon looked over at Ralph and tilted his head, Ralph returned the expression with a dismissing smiles and a shake of the head. He’d come to the conclusion that God was watching over him and Simon, the latter only continued to look at him with a pained and pitiful face.
