Music To Read To

We’ve been quiet for a few weeks, but we’re back! Joe has sent in another collection, and it’s bloody lovely…

“I like to listen to something when I’m reading on my train to work in the mornings so I can block out the sound of the other commuters, but it has to be something that doesn’t distract me from my book. Hence I made this playlist with lots of ambient niceness and chilled out electronic and a little jazz. Also, it’s good to draw stuff to!”

Bowie – Alternative Album Cuts

A week on from the passing of one of the greatest musicians in pop, Paul has put together a fitting tribute.

“In tribute to the great man, a collection of non-single album tracks. One from each of the studio albums on Spotify (including Tin Machine and Buddha of Suburbia) and intended to present another facet of the chameleon of pop (although that’s not a term he accepted, as in his words ‘A chameleon tries to blend in…’).

“In no way is this an exhaustive list, it simply reflects some of the tracks which I think stand out, and in some cases may prompt a re-examination of his less well-known albums.”

Maxed Ape

Look at this! It’s 2016, and we’re kicking off with a massive mixtape from Matt.

“16 songs (and a long 16 songs at that), here’s the cream of the albums I’ve picked up, got into, or rediscovered over the past 12 to 18 months. Fair range of genres, but hopefully the examples of each genre should be accessible enough to be enjoyed by all ears.

“Particular highlight would be The Curtain, by Snarky Puppy & the Metropole Orkest. 15 minutes of absolute musical heaven, with movements ranging from endorphin-spiking modulations under a flugel horn solo, to “Super Mario taking it all the way to church” moog runs, to a gorgeous, peaceful piano feature near the end. The whole piece was recorded and filmed in front of a small audience, and is on YouTube. Search the tune up, hit play, go fullscreen. Absolute must-watch.”

3 Chord Wonders

Look! It’s a mixtape, and it’s by Paul. He had this to say:

“Hi y'all,

“So perhaps I’m a being a little harsh on these songs, some of them did manage to include 4 chords. But you get the idea. There are some songs with debatable genre, although for the most part I went with the classic teenage pop-punk that everyone knows and loves but doesn’t admit to in respectable company. Starting with one of the most well known modern punk tracks, and closing out with a song from the first album I ever bought - The Offspring’s “Conspiracy of One”, hopefully there will be some nostalgia value for everyone!”

“A mix from about 10 years ago, comprised entirely of tracks under a minute long. Great care was taken to give it a listenable flow, with ambient sections butting up against dialogue, drone, mini-songs and intense freak outs.

“Not all tracks from the original are on Spotify, so 15(ish) replacements have been added.

“It’s 99 tracks long, because this was the upper limit for burning a CD back when I made it.

“ENJOY.”
