▍ ▎ ▶ Through The Years
「 ☀ 」It had been almost half a year since the third years of the Iwatobi Swim Club had graduated, and during that whole six odd months it was only now that both Haruka and Makoto decided upon what they were going to do next, this being attending college. Together that is.
Makoto knew all too well he wanted to continue spending his years with the raven even after school, he couldn’t just simply part ways with Haruka who had been the biggest part of his life since early childhood. And now, here they were, phone to their ears as they agreed on where to meet before they would leave for the station and be on their way to their new apartment located near the college they both were accepted to.
” Okay, Haru-Chan, I’ll see you in an hour! “
With that the brunette parted the mobile from his ear, tapping the end button before slipping it in his back pocket and continuing his mission on folding and placing various clothing items in to his suitcase, ocassionally a few things from his room to accompany although most went in to the boxes that were to be mailed to him in a few days by his parents to his new apartment.
Throughout the past month is when Haru and Makoto had finally properly talked out their future, although neither really had any set plans so they decided upon taking various courses in a college a few hours away that even offered sporting activities such as swimming which naturally they agreed immediately on. With that came the hassle of trying to find a place to stay, but the dorms at the college were certainly not what they wanted or expected so they managed to seek out an apartment ten minutes away from the school, their room located on the fifteenth floor, not to mention the top.
Makoto was certainly excited for it all, he got to move in and attend college with his best friend, yet of course their was the slight anxiety of leaving home, after spending easily over eighteen years with his family it wasn’t the easiest thing to say goodbye. Not to mention the twins weren’t making it any easier, having been clinging on to his legs and arms since they woke up, whining about how they didn’t want their ‘big brothers’ this including Haruka, to not go so far away.
It was hard enough packing let alone trying to get them off five minutes before the arranged time he was to meet with Haru. By the time both his mother and father had each twin to their sides he only had a mere minute before the deadline, his farewells far more rushed than planned before he was running as fast as he possibly could whilst faltering having to tug several kilos of luggage behind him. It wasn’t easy to say the least.
He was exactly two minutes late when he finally reached the two staircases that parted ways, this being where the two had both met and parted during their school days. A small pain tore at his heart as he realized this would be the last time in quite a while before they could come here once again, not to mention the fact on how much they had aged in such a short amount of time.
By the time he reached the bottom he was finding it rather difficult to breathe, throat dry and gasps raspy as he slumped forwards, holding his knees to steady himself from collapsing. Eventually he managed to lift his head up, seeing a rather amused raven seated upon the middle of the stairs, suit case on one side whilst the ivory stray cat was seated tentatively on the other side, purring contently as it nuzzled the teens leg.
” Sorry I’m late, Haru-chan! “
Barely managing to gasp out his apology it seemed the other really didn’t care all too much on his tardiness which was something he certainly appreciated all these years. Haruka was rather lenient and wasn’t all too caring on small mistakes or any at all for he forgave almost anything to begin with.
One last farewell was needed and that was to the alley cat he had known since his early second year, now fully grown from the small kitten he had met the feline as. With that the two continued on to the station, walking side by side as they passed the beach that was something they passed multiple times each day together, and to think this would be temporarily one of the last.
A quick side glance to Haru confirmed his very thoughts, every time they were to pass the ocean he would have a seemling longing expression hidden within his eyes, yet no matter Makoto always could see it.
” I heard there’s a beach not too far from the university, let’s go swimming there when it warms up shall we, Haru-chan? ” The brunette suggested with that signature smile full of sincerity and warmth.
Not too long after they reached the station, buying their tickets and settling themselves opposite each other, bags on the open seats beside them as to not obstruct the corridor. As usual Makoto babbled on about his day and how he wasn’t allowed to leave and so on as he usually did, knowing Haru wasn’t the type to talk all too much however he knew he was listening for a comment was put in here and there. It was a blissful relationship they had, something the brunette treasured deeply and never wished otherwise on.
When the towering university came in to view as the train slowed to a halt at the station they were to get off, he couldn’t surpass an excited grin, eagerly up and heading towards the now opening doors, luggage in tow and Haru close behind. Thankfully their apartment building was literally only a few minutes away from the station, meaning they didn’t have to pull their luggage for too long to exhaust them. Once inside and floor selected on the elevator they quickly reached the top, exiting and finding their new apartment with ease, key already in Makoto’s hand as he slipped it in to the lock and turned it with absolute glee in his eyes.
The apartment was exactly what the images were, it was modern and sleek, yet some qualities did indeed hint that it wasn’t as expensive as you would think it would be after a quick glance. After all, neither had jobs or all that much money to begin with, it was only with the help of their parents and a little part time work that they managed to get this place, something they would need to pay off with finding a job quite soon.
Unpacking was certainly not all too fun, although they couldn’t unpack all too much as some of their furniture was to arrive later in the week, so for now they had to sleep on futons, cook with simple utensils and entertain themselves without a tv which was rather easy considering the two. A small sigh was given as the taller leaned back against the kitchen counter, already quite tired from just the trip and unpacking yet there was still one more thing they needed to do before they could settle for the day.
” Haru, should we go check out the university now? “
Haruka slipped his phone shut once the call with Makoto had ended, turning to look at his still open suitcase. His eyes narrowed, lingering on the object for a moment as he went over the items he had decided to take with him to his new home to make sure he didn't forget anything, the rest of his stuff already over at Makoto's house at the Tachibanas offering to send them over once both teens had settled on their new home. He had managed to convince his parents not to sell their house in Iwatobi--it was too precious for the raven, too full of memories he wasn't ready to let go of, nor was he sure he would ever be. That and he'd like to have a place to come back to after graduation, and on the few vacations he had between terms in his college years.
Knowing that this house would continue to be his home even if he would be temporarily living elsewhere put his mind at ease, and allowed him to feel excited for the days to come. From now on he'd be living with his best friend. The thought sent an excited shiver down his spine: he and Makoto were always together and they had sleepovers more often than not, but from tomorrow on it would be the brunette's face the first thing Haru saw every morning, and he couldn't help the way his heart beat faster in anticipation. He briefly wondered if it would feel as dream-like as it felt now, when they got there, when they woke up under the same roof, knowing that it would be the same for as long as their college life lasted.
Standing up from where he had been crouching next to his suitcase, Haru closed it up and took it to lay it next to the door, ready to take it and go when the arranged hour for him to meet his best friend came. In the meantime, Haru took one last bath in his bathtub before packing the items he had yet to pack in his travel handbag, and made sure to put on his most comfortable outfit for the trip before walking towards the kitchen to retrieve the small bento boxes he had prepared in case Makoto and he got hungry on their way. He double-checked once more and spared a glance at his house, now looking lonelier than ever, and swallowed the lump in his throat before opening the door and stepping outside. He wasn't leaving forever, and it wasn't like him to get emotional over a house.
Surprised that Makoto hadn't been waiting for him at the stairs, Haru took a seat beside the stray cat Makoto had taken a liking to and absent-mindedly petted it until his best friend appeared in front of him, flustered and a little out of breath; the sight making Haru's lips twitch upwards in a small, amused smile. "It's okay," he replied to Makoto's apology, and stood up to start making their way to the station.
The raven-haired teen was aware that this would be the last time the pair would walk along the beach in their hometown, but he also knew that just like their living away, it would be temporary. Surely they'd have another chance at reliving this same scene once they were back in the small town, and Haru found that he wasn't feeling as melancholic about the situation as he probably would have had Makoto not been there by his side, and with his gaze lingering on the ocean he offered whatever god was up there his gratefulness for letting him spend his days by his most important person's side, even after high school. Said person's voice startled him out of his thoughts, and he was a bit surprised and amused that Makoto had been far from voicing the thoughts currently going through his head, but he wasn't about to correct him: that would be all kinds of embarrassing.
"Yeah, let's." was Haru's short reply, and the rest of their way to the station was calm and quiet, the silence between them a comfortable, warm one.
It wasn't long before their train arrived, and the time it took them to arrive to their destination would've felt much longer hadn't they been buzzing with excitement and anticipation; and Makoto's habit of speaking to keep them entertained made the trip that much shorter. Haru's gaze lingered on his friend as the train slowed down to a halt on their stop, and he couldn't help the smile that drew itself on his face at seeing Makoto so happy, his eyes full of such awe. He trailed behind the brunette, letting him lead the way as he walked behind, enjoying the beginnings of their new life together and his friend's happiness.
Once they were inside their new shared apartment, Haruka all but ran to the bathroom to check out its bathtub, and with a quick glance he decided it was acceptable enough; and that was all he needed. He quickly returned to Makoto's side and helped the other unpack as he too, took out his stuff and started organizing it. He placed the bento boxes they had yet to eat on the kitchen counter and moved to his handbag, bringing out the items that belonged in the bathroom before moving to place them neatly in said room.
Despite both teens' exhaustion from packing, travelling and unpacking, they had yet to be able to call it a day, and so when Makoto's suggestion of visiting the place they would be taking their classes in came, Haru let out a soft groan, thinking of how much he'd rather filling the tub and relaxing for a while. His bath would have to wait, then. "Yeah, let's go." he said, and tilted his head in the direction of the front door as he walked forwards, hearing Makoto trailing just behind him.
The walk to the university wasn't a long one, and it occurred to Haru that even though their location had changed, the walks to and from school would still be an unchanging thing between the pair. He spared a glance at Makoto, watching from the corner of his eyes as the brunette walked with a soft smile on his face, and he couldn't help but give one of his own; blue eyes glistening with quiet happiness and soft affection. "Please take care of me from now on," he said; his eyes never leaving Makoto's.
"And let's have fun."
