A Girl Set Apart

I am a writer and a role-player. I know many writers who do not take role-playing seriously as an artform. They are mistaken in that opinion. Role-playing allows for persistent characters that change and grow over time and whose growth is dependent not only upon my creativity, but the creativity of others. This is what separates role-play from other forms of creative writing. I thrive upon its collaborative aspects and the open ended nature of the story allows me to treat the character as if she were a living being, as opposed to a discrete story with a beginning and and ending. The difference between the two is subtle, but so very key to why I spend so much time in this immersive, fictional world.

What does Mizzen think about when she goes out into the city alone? What are her favorite moments so far?

Mizzen thinks about a few things. First and foremost, she wonders whether anyone saw her change into her disguise and whether anyone will recognize her. Her going out is only partially flaunting a rule, because she figures that as long as no one recognizes her, she wont be a target She’s playing it safe in her mind.It’s fun for her, pushing boundaries, but more than anything else, it is freeing. Suddenly she’s not a noble, she’s just a girl like anyone else and able to be herself. Her words and actions don’t reflect upon her family.It’s also fun for her to think of herself as this champion of justice. She’s Batmizz, if bat-whatever was a thing in the game. It’s an indulgence in fantasy that really never leads to anything as she doesn’t really seek out trouble. She’s the kid who ties a towel around her neck and runs around being superman.. except… it’s armour.. and a mask… and her family actually does have enemies.So far, my favorite moments have been the rp scenes when she’s out as Batmizz. She’s actually developed a few relationships doing so, and those connections have been so fun to make. I am grateful to my rp partners who have played along, because she is -really, really- bad at disguise. She forgets to have a backstory, her fake voice changes and sometimes she outright forgets that she’s in disguise at all! I’ve never had so much fun playing a character so inept at something.It’s a blast.

I sparred Rose yesterday. Best spar ever. We both ended up with concussions, black eyes, broken noses and bruised thighs. I had to go to my hairdresser today to figure out how to deal with the hair that got pulled out. It was amazing. I finally found someone who isn't’ afraid to hurt me and who let me go all out with them. It wasn’t elegant, but it was smart and courageous and we both dealt with huge amounts of pain. I want to spar her again. Sir Stephen biffed me off, though, because he was mad and said that we’d dishonoured fighting. He said we’d brought shame to sparring matches. I tell you what Elune, if I’d not been already on my bass, Id have jumped at him and eaten his face right there. Honour is important to me. It’s one of the things that I hold near and dear because so few nobles do. I have a duty to my house, I’ve a duty to those people who are under my care and protection and I’ve a duty to use my station to improve the lives of others. It is why I do not take a salary for my medical work. I don’t now and I never will. So don’t talk to me about honour! There are so many things I do wrong. I sneak out, I want to kiss boys, I look like an elf, I’m not quite yet an adult and I get -bristly- sometimes, but do not impugn my honour. My honour is the one thing I have that is important to me, and just because I did not fight by your rules, does not mean that I do not have it. How dare you?! I fought with honour, with courage and with control and I gave as good as I got, so keep your stupid honour to yourself, because I know who I am. That is all.

A ribboned box arrived by courier for Brei sometime mid-morning. Mizzen knew that Brei liked her sleep. It would open to reveal a suite of chocolate bonbons and other such niceties, each decorated with pastel pinks and molded into fanciful shapes that a teenager might think appealing. The note with them was simple, its few words elegantly written and its paper smelling of orange blossom. “I’m sorry, Love Mizzen.” The note itself was sealed with a scintillating pink wax bearing the Heathon’s crest.

Growing Pains, cont.

My puberty is broken. Mom says it’s not, but I know that it is. The itching and the aching and being all clumsy is in the texts. I know about that, and I know about hormones and that they cause mood swings. They don’t say anything about my ears hurting or about every sound sounding like it’s ten times too loud and feeling like needles perforating my eardrums! Broken. What are supposed to be mood swings, for me are violent homicidal urges to to eat peoples faces. No warning. I’ll be talking to them and then suddenly, they’re the most vile creature on the planet and I need to claw out their eyes and suck the juice! Broken! Yesterday, I locked myself in my room with the very real intention of never coming out again until I was old and then five minutes later, I’m off to go try to find a boy to kiss because I don’t care what anyone else says. They’re MY lips, not theirs! Broken. 

Then twenty minutes after that, I’m stomping around the apartments looking for Brei so I can give her more pieces of my mind.  She wassn’t even there! I’d not seen her in days! She didn’t do anything! Broken! I’m going insane. I am slowly going insane, and this may be my last moment of lucidity.

Last night I was talking with Meryiam and Rhett, and somehow the conversation got onto boys- well boys and girls, but kissing and love and all that. I grew confused, because they both told me to explore and find out what I like. I countered with the fact that anyone I kiss has to meet my parents first and if I’m doing it properly, a courtship would commence- a chaperoned courtship, no less. Even if it didn’t work out, we would be together for no less than six months. Six months, with one person! On top of that, if I went through suitors too quickly, I would start to get a reputation and that wouldn’t do our family any good.  I don’t think Mery understood my issue. I don’t want to take a decade to explore when there are so many kissable people around! How am I supposed to learn what I like and what I do not when by the time I have any sort of sample base, I’ll be old enough that people will be wondering why I’m not married yet. That’s not exploration, that’s a slow and tedious path to spinsterhood. That was about the time that Rhett came up with the idea of a brothel. I think Mery was about to flay him alive, but his suggestions made sense! I wouldn’t sully myself with something like Goldshire, but he said that he knew of some upper class brothels where nobles attended and that I could go under a false persona so as not to have anything tied to our house. I’ve been picking out outfits all day. I”m so excited.

Growing pains

What is wrong with me lately?  I snap at Brei for no reaon. Well, that’s not true.We used to be close. We would talk. We were honest with each other. Now she wont even let me use her name and she silences her husband when he goes to give an honest answer to a question. Why? What happened? I always looked at her like a big sister and now she’s acting like I’m practically a stranger. Then the tart has the audacity to seem to question my etiquette, when it is perfectly acceptable to use a title with a first name for someone with whom you are familiar and of equal status.  What I don’t understand is why I’m angry so often, and some days I’m the exact opposite. Some days are so dark that I get scared that I’m going to run away or hurt something. Sometimes I want to. My ears are hurting and I don’t know why. I mean, I read up on puberty and such, because in nursing we learn all about chemicals and body changes, but nothing was mentioned about ears hurting or the fact that loud noises feel like something is exploding in my head.... or that my skin feels all itchy and like I’m being burned and tickled at the same time. Have you ever had those times when it doesn’t matter what someone is saying, but the sound of their voice just makes you feel disgusted and angry and you just want to hit them? Somewhere inside I know that it’s not them, but the tone.. and the words. It’s like velvet that has rotted. It’s even worse when I’m on my period. I don’t know who I am anymore. I was their Haethon heir, and honestly, I still am. My adoption is as good a blood, and mother inherited despite their being male heirs. I don’t push the issue, because really, a true noble and heir would be concerned with the well-being of the house as is her responsibility. Not over petty things like who the title is going to go to in forty years. I’m better than that, but it still irks when everyone thinks of Robert at the heir because he’s got a penis. Then again, if they did think of me, I’d be the one they were thinking of taking away. Guess I should count myself lucky in that- sorta. Others have noticed that things aren’t right. Lady Cerridwyn noticed and we talked for a little bit, but I didn’t know what to say. I just didn’t. I don’t know what to do. I just know I can’t keep going like this. It hurts.

Sometimes I feel lost. I feel like all people see is my ears and my skin. They seem to just see an elf who is missing out on her culture- who should be with “her people”. They’re usually not rude enough to say that outright. I say usually, as there was one particular person who took it upon himself to ask me if I was aware that my parents and siblings were all going to die while I was still young.

Who asks that of a kid, especially one who has already lost? Most are not so brash, but the sentiment is the same. They’ll talk about the cultural things I should be learning, or how difficult it’s going to be for me in polite society. What they don’t seem to see is that they’re the ones who make it difficult.  The difficulty is that sometimes I feel like I’m wearing a costume and no one knows that it’s not real. When they say “your people”, it doesn't mean anything to me, because I have only ever known humans. All that phrase does is tell me that I don’t belong, that I am different. If they bothered to look, they would see that I’m also kind and I’m smart. I’m driven and dedicated and I’m just like any other girl my age, except that I also have a nursing certification. I am an artist and I love my family and would do anything for my house. These are the important things, not my ears, not my skin (though those are effing beautiful, so eff you world!) I wish I could just say: Take some time to see who I am, because there’s a pretty nice girl under that skin. Let my mother worry about my education or whether or not I am happy.

Em didn’t have a… good singing voice, but she was loud so she had that going for her. Honestly it wasn’t surprising that Mizzen had heard her old friend, half of the Kingdom probably heard her.

It wasn’t surprising, either, the slight squeak that was emitted when Em turned to spot Mizzen in the doorway. She didn’t bother covering herself, so her hands remained in her hair as her eyes widened and a bright smile took hold."Whoa. Long time no see! Tap dancin’ titans, s’been a while, ain’t it?" Em would have offered a hug, had the environment been different.

MIzzen's blush was a furious one! She'd never been shy about the body itself- it was just a body, but the moment of seeing her friend again in such a vulnerable situation set her little heart racing, and a purple tint to her cheeks. "Uhm... hi...?" Giggling self-consciously, she waggled her fingers and in her confused state that warred between titillation and embarrassment, she'd forgotten to look away.

I remember the first time I saw a falling star. Don't see many in the reach, as even at night, there's this glow over everything, but I think I was maybe seven the first time I ventured out of the city- at least the first time I remember it. Mom and Dad used to talk about taking me places when I was really young. Strange places. Anyway!First time I saw a shooting start it was in Shaemore, near that dam and I almost jumped out of my skin. It was like one of the gods was doing something pretty and mists, yeah, I made a wish. I was young then, though, and I wished for something that couldn't happen.
