       unfortunately, he'd come to learn that time and time again. the most recent example? lucia. that still sat heavy on his chest, the kind of betrayal he couldn't just brush under the rug. instead, he'd mostly been trying to throw his all at work, become the same married to his job guy he'd been before...well, before morgan. he refused to consider why she was the one who'd changed him. selena was nothing like lucia. adam been working for the lapd for more than two decades, known her for a huge chunk of that time, and he knew she could be trusted. it was willa he didn't trust, because of the roman of it all. "selena..." he started, trailing off with a sigh. "i'm not asking you to share all of your secrets with me, but do you really trust her?"

"wet and sticky is very icky. sticky and wet makes mommy upset," morgan muttered under her breath in a sing song voice. she was probably going to regret saying that later, but too much information lived in her head, ready to awaken like a sleeper agent at all times. it made her good at this job, but also had a tendency to make her feel like she was destined to end up alone.

shaking off the ridiculousness of that childish reference, her eyes widened. "mom. parents. no!" her eyes widened even more as she put two photos side by side. "child! you remember how i said it seemed like both of them were left handed even though one still wrote with his right hand? look at their faces. it's a little blurry on the right, but you see that dimple, too, right?"

       "...i'm not even gonna ask." a lot of the time, that seemed to be for the best with morgan. she was ridiculously smart, but she was also ridiculously infuriating sometimes. this was one of those times when it seemed as if the best thing to do was to ignore it completely, lest she start to explain where that song was from. luckily, the case was enough to distract the both of them. karadec stared in awe down at the photos - not because he was awestruck by the resemblance, but because he was awestruck by her. competent as he and the rest of major crimes were, sometimes he wondered how the hell they'd ever solved a case without her. "i do, i see it. they're father and son?"

"relax. what are you the mom from icarly?" another scoff. she knew he probably wouldn't get the reference or at the very least she'd be shocked. he didn't seem like the type that was familiar with early 2000s nickelodeon or nickelodeon shows in general. the idea of him relaxing to watch a tv show at all brought a brief smirk to her face. did he even know how to relax? did she?

"more like covering for someone." she sighed and flipped through more items. "but, who?"

       unsurprisingly, he stared blankly at her. "i have no idea what you're talking about, and that's probably for the best," adam admitted. it wasn't the first time she'd referenced something he had no knowledge of, and almost definitely wouldn't be the last either. film and television weren't exactly his forte, he was more of a workout and board games kind of guy. he moved swiftly on from that thought, his mind going over the different possibilities in his head. morgan was the one who could see the small details, but he was still damn good as his job. mostly. "a lover, maybe?"

        it had been a long day already. adam had already been to speak to several witnesses, and seemed to be getting absolutely nowhere with his current case. it was for that very reason that he'd decided to forget all about it for the time being, and grab coffee. he turned suddenly, almost slamming into the woman behind him. "shit. i'm so sorry. are you alright?"

morgan scoffs and rolls her eyes. "oh my god, karadec." she shakes her head in tandem with her words. "again, a little potential apple juice isn't going to kill you." she continued to rifle through the files, eyes scanning photos, small details, a receipt to a chinese restaurant on a thursday on 5th street. something had to click, right? sure, they'd brought in a suspect the day before, but something about it didn't feel right. or maybe too right? "if it helps, i didn't bring the whole file home." she grins. "so, progress?" her eyes returned to the pieces in front of her. "but, you feel it, too, right? something doesn't add up."

        "- but apple juice is sticky." he was aware those words made him sound a little bit like a child, but he didn't try to backtrack. she knew fine well how he felt about stickiness by now. adam dried his hands off, turning to turn her, unable to hide the hint of amusement her technicality brought about. when she'd first started working with them, he'd hated how much she bent the rules...now, he quite often found himself following her lead, bending a few rules of his own. soto had been right, she was rubbing off on him. "it's all a little too neat," he agreed, begrudgingly. "you think he was framed?"

        a sigh escaped adam's lips, as he glanced in floribeth's direction. something about her reminded him a lot of morgan, and one morgan was honestly bad enough. affectionately, of course. "please don't touch anything," he insisted, though he knew those kinds of demands usually went ignored, no matter who he said them to. "and i mean that."

        mit wasn't exactly within the lapd's jurisdiction. this trip, however, had absolutely nothing to do with work. he wasn't entirely sure how he'd ended up roped into visiting colleges with morgan and ava, but given that the latter was keen to visit as many colleges as possible on the east coast, while his partner was hoping she'd settle on calarts? he was mainly there for emotional support. one trip to the cafeteria to grab a crappy cup of coffee later, and he was unfortunately very, very lost. he cleared his throat. "excuse me? don't suppose you know the way to the art department?"

         he was enjoying spend time with sophie, even if he'd never said it out loud. he'd thought it plenty, and it was circling through his mind now, as he watched her. adam cleared his throat, turning his head away before she noticed he'd been looking for a little too long. "are you busy?"

         "nothing good starts with 'it was just chloe', morgan," he muttered with an exaggerated sigh, staring at the casefile on her kitchen counter like it was an afront to him personally. adam was a big fan of her kids, really he was, but he was not a big fan of stickiness. he was hoping the mystery goo on the important lapd paperwork was just applesauce, but even that was quite frankly disgusting. "as a matter of fact, nothing good starts with you bringing these home. haven't we talked about this?" as he made his way towards her sink ( because scrubbing his hands was now necessary ), he glanced back at her. "is this one really getting to you that much that you needed to bring it with you? i thought we were really getting somewhere with this one."

'no' would be the easiest answer. adam knew that the single syllable could get him out of a situation he really didn't want to be in. unfortunately, it would also be a lie, and his curiosity was already piqued. damn it. whatever the noise was, he very much could hear it, and had he been armed in that moment, he'd have been reaching for his firearm without a second thought. instead, he had absolutely nothing. "i do," he admitted, fully alert, one arm reaching out to block her. "i'll check it out. stay behind me."

his lips set in a thin line. adam knew it was a fair question, but he didn't need people calling him out on his shit. not right now. "can't," he insisted, perhaps a little too quickly. there was often a fine line between the two, one he seldom crossed, because he'd always liked to play by the book, ensure he followed every rule. "i'm sorry, but rules are rules. and they're there for a reason."

"because it's my job." that was the simple answer, the easiest answer to give. he helped because he was supposed to, what else would it be? adam had been married to his job for a long time, always followed the rules, played by the book, and helped those he was supposed to help. simple. it got a lot more complicated if he admitted he actually cared about people, actually was more than ( as morgan had so eloquently put it ) a heartless police robot. yet, he hesitated... "and, you looked like you could use the help."
