This Artfully Disgusting Surfing Ad Calls for Cleaner Beaches in Brazil By David Gianatasio

A gorgeous, black and white ad is a PSA for cleaner beaches in Brazil. It features a man surfing on a tarp, not the ocean. And when he emerges from the tarp wave at the end, he is covered in a oil-like black material. Type at the end of the PSA informs the viewer that a lot of untreated sewage is dumped into the ocean, and Brazilian beaches need to be cleaner.

I was drawn to this ad because of my interest in environmental issues. I really liked how they were artistic with it, and not too in-your-face about the problem but still got their point across.

A question: Will they make a follow up PSA that is artistically similar to this one?

After reading into the controversy on presidential candidate airtime on Saturday Night Live, we now understand the problems. The regulation that is being proposed regarding airtime is called the Communication Act of 1934. This act “requires that broadcast networks to comparable time (roughly 12 minutes) to opposing candidates”, according to the article. Since Trump was asked to host the show and appeared on more than 12 minutes of the show, other GOP candidates should be given the equal opportunity to “debate” their positions. In their opinion, SNL still counts as television time even though it is “fake” television.

We have two opinions on this issue. The first opinion is that Trump’s appearance on SNL should trigger the regulation due to that face that Trump has gained more free publicity than other candidates. The presidential race should be a fair competition and therefore the other candidates should be allowed to ask for equal opportunity. The other opinion is that SNL is particular on who they ask to host so therefore we feel as though if the other candidates got on there, they would lose the funny and satire aspect by being too serious.

Presidential Candidates for the upcoming election are requesting the same amount of air time on the show Saturday Night Live as Donald Trump received. The regulation that would allow that demand to take place is the FCC Equal Time Rule.

The FCC Equal Time Rule allows the candidates to request this because it is a law that allows for all candidates to appear an equal amount of time on all non-news television programming. The Equal Time Rule specifies that radio and television broadcast stations must provide an equivalent opportunity to an opposing political candidate who request it. An example of this would be a station giving out 5 free minutes to a candidate in prime time. That station must give other candidates the same opportunity.

We believe that SNL needs to follow the FCC Equal Time Rule because it is an entertainment program so it is a law they must follow. We believe that SNL will follow this rule because they are a major entertainment program and they will not want to go against the rules and risk their good name.

The regulation that would allow the fellow GOP candidates to request equal time on NBC due to Trump’s appearance on SNL is the FCC equal time rule. This regulation as we understand it requires broadcast networks to offer equal opportunity for candidates to appear on non-news programs. The exceptions are scheduled interviews, on the spot news events, and news broadcasts. Our group agreed that SNL does not qualify as a news program. Since SNL is an entertainment show then the GOP candidates have the right based on the equal time rule to request equal air time as Trump. Trump got about 12 minutes of time on SNL according to sources. Equal time rule then allows the candidates to have that amount of time on the program if they request it within 7 days of Trump’s appearance. Since this is the case our group believes the other candidates should receive the airtime.

The FCC’s regulation of “Equal Time” allows other presidential candidates the opportunity to get equal airtime but with some stipulations.

In order to get the “equal time” the candidate must ask for it; it will not just be handed to them. They also have to prove they are qualified to run for president. They must also show they are on the ballot in a state where NBC aired SNL. For this case, it is too early for the candidates to be on ballots, so they have to prove they made a “substantial showing" of their candidacy in that state.

The SNL appearance definitely triggers that regulation. With SNL being such a popular show among the younger and middle aged voters, they might find a presidential candidate more appealing if he or she is able to relate to them on a comedic level. It gives voters a new prospective on the candidate, and so other candidates would most likely want the chance at that same spotlight.

B. This rule states that any candidate can get equal broadcast time on TV or radio if another candidate has received it on that outlet. This means that if one candidate gets 2 minutes on a station, if another candidate request this from that station, they can have the same amount of time to do the same thing.

C. Our group decided that the rule should apply because this is a type of on-the-spot news event. If other candidates want the time to get on the show and somehow put their politics through humor they should be allowed. This also allows a bigger audience to see their messages, even if it is in a satirical type of way.

Have you ever had legos? If so, then you probably know that they are hard as a rock and extremely point on each corner of the piece. These lego pieces are so small that you could easily make a mess and there are so many to pick up when you are done playing with them. What happens you don’t pick them up? They become human foot traps. Everyone I have ever met and talked about legos has stepped on a lego and has gone indescribable pain. Well have no fear, the official LEGO SLIPPERS are here!!!!! These slippers have the Lego logo right on the front and have a smooth bottom cushion to protect every centimeter of your foot. These can be found on a unspecified French website. The detrimental piece to this puzzle is that they are only making like 1500 pairs of these slippers this season. Hopefully next Christmas, or sooner than that, there are more slippers that are manufactured because these slippers could be the next greatest thing in the shoe industry. Protect your feet and don’t miss out on these!

Why are only 1500 of them being manufactured?

What can we do to get the word out so that manufacturers realize the gold mine they can have if they create more of these slippers?

This Black Friday Target was not only discounting popular electronics and toys as door busters for anxious shoppers, but unknowingly offering steep discounts on things such as mayonnaise, invitations to Kyle’s Bar Mitzvah , and Tents (Possum included). Popular creative Tumblr blog, Obvious Plant, teamed up with comedian, Jeff Wysaski, and put to work their great skills in marketing and design to come up with ads that look eerily similar to those target actually sent out for Black Friday. Trolling the store, these mock ads were set up and displayed at an unknowing location.

The reason this story, specifically captured my attention was the apparently comical content included in pictures throughout the article. I am very impressed in the quality of the work this comedian and blogger produced. At first glance it would be hard to spot that these ads are not your typical, run of the mill, Target Black Friday inserts. They were tasteful and not over the top with the joke, which makes it even funnier for Target employees to just laugh it off and enjoy the prank, vs. actually upsetting some customers.

I think that this was a successful stunt by the blogger and it will be spread around the internet in a comical fashion. I am curious as to whether this was the only location where they put up these flyers? Will they continue to do this on future Black Fridays? How much time did it take the busy Target employees to catch these impostor flyers hanging in the deals section, before they were taken down? And in the future, what will this comedian/blogger do with his design talents / has he ever worked for an actual advertising agency?

1.The article is about how lego is making slippers to protect our feet from the painful little bricks. Although they are only making 1,500 of the slipper therefore they will be a random distribution of the slippers and they have to add them on a Christmas Wish List for the Lego France website.

2. This article caught my attention because of the fact watching my nieces and nephews and babysitting neighbors I have been the victim of the very painful little lego brick. I think it’s a unique and fun idea especially for parents who suffer from these on a daily basis.

3. I think its questionable to make these limited edition because I think people would benefit from these and would enjoy these for christmas presents not only for them but their children as well so they both don’t have to endure the pain of the legos.

FCB Mayo and Peruvian engineering college UTEC has created an electric light that is powered by a plant. They have created this light for a isolated community in the Peruvian rain forest, who was recently hit with a flood and does not have access to electricity. The light collects nutrients from the soil and the plant and converts it in to energy which can be stored in conventional batteries, which then turns the light on. They were able to take the concept of making energy from a potato and find a way to make it from soil. They used only soil and tools that could be found in this small remote town so that the people who lived there could make these lights themselves and fix problems if they arise. The lights can be on for about two hours a day.

This article caught my interest because I am really interested in plants. I have multiple plants in my room at school and I always plant flowers every spring. I am also interested in helping third world countries and finding ways to get them the resources that they need. I personally have not been involved with any projects like this, but I think it is really cool to read about them and to see the work that people are doing for other countries.

I do have some questions about this new technology. Are these lights easy enough to make that the villagers can make them when they are gone? Also, are they going to make this technology available for other places to be able to use that also do not have technology? I think it would be really cool if they could use this same concept and use other tools from other places around the world to make this possible for other places as well.

This ad campaign combines several components that people are generally already familiar with, like google street view, and puts it into a place it’s never been before- an airplane. This ad walks consumers through one of Virgin Airlines airplanes, and allows them to see up close the details of the plane- like how much leg room is available.

This article caught my interest because it seems like an idea that is very original and one of a kind. No other airline has tried to market themselves in this way, and few other businesses in general have tried this approach. This is a good way to let people see what flying on your airline is like before they buy the tickets for it.

Because part of their campaign is stationed in bus stations, I wonder if those ads will be able to reach their target market. I don’t know many people who take the bus regularly, and also fly regularly. It seems like an odd place to put ads for flying.

This Beautifully Simple Illustration Is the Perfect Ad for National Geographic Kids

This article discusses the success of a new ad for National Geographic Kids. The ad is incredible simply, yet beautiful, eye catching, and perfectly hits their target market: children. The ad was generated by an Istanbul agency for a media conglomerate that handles the advertising for National Geographic Turkey.

This article really caught my eye because of the awesome dinosaur picture (I guess the ad works on adults too). The only question remaining in my mind is how successful the ad/cover was for sales.

FCB and UTEC's Latest Green Innovation Is a Plant-Powered Lamp for Remote Peru By David Gianatasio

FCB Mayo has teamed up once again with UTEC, a Peruvian engineering school, for more high-tech advertising. Before, the pair won awards with incredible inventions such as the Air Orchard and Purifying Billboard. This time, they brought light to a remote village without electricity. The Plant Lamp uses nutrients from the plant as usable energy, stored in batteries. The lamp yields two hours of light per day, making a massive impact on the lives of these villagers. In an interview, FCB Mayo CEO explained that the point of the project was not only to help people in need, but to attract students to UTEC.

I picked this article because sustainable energy really interests me. I think it’s fascinating all the ways people can come up non-traditional energy sources, and when it is tied to advertising it makes for a more interesting story.

A couple questions I have: What were the villagers reaction to receiving the lamps? Is addressing social issues an effective way to advertise?

Ask most kids that are my age and they will describe that the most painful thing that has ever happened to them is stepping on one of those little legos and is the equivalent of torture to most of them. Lego has finally made the perfect thing to save you from the horrid pain of plastic being shoved into the bottom of your foot. Teaming up with a French company, Lego finally made slippers to combat the pain and allow you to move around in a room filled with legos. While the world is super excited, most people don’t realize that only a couple thousand will be released. With this much hype for something that has been going on for years, many people hope they will continue to release them after.

This article caught my interest because I know that stepping on legos hurt. Badly. It comes up as a joke all the time that it is the worst pain for kids born in the 90′s. It is still used as a joke as the worst pain out there. I think it is very cool that even Lego realizes that its a joke and they can capitalize on something that is so small. They know it will turn into a collector’s dream and they are going to make a huge demand for them. The question that did pop up in my mind was how long it will take them to re-release them. They know they will release more. It’s just a matter of when that will happen.

Durex is interested in adding a condom emoji in honor of World AIDS Day on Dec. 1st. The goal is to get one million people to support the movement so that Durex can promote safe sex. 80 percent of people between 18-25 use emojis for basic communication. The problem that is often seen is that people will use certain emoji’s to encourage sexual behavior. The people between 18-25 have the most frequent amount of sex compared to any other age group. We can make a difference in using this condom to promote safe sex. As a society, we know there is no way to try to prevent sex by any type of protest, because it is natural to have sexual urges for another person. Using “#condomemoji” is helping the movement so that we can spread awareness to use a condom while having sex. Show your support and spread #condomemoji as we try to encourage people to have sex the right way.

I liked this article but it is making a valid point in what the issue is. The issue is that people want to have sex and will assume it is okay to not wear a condom but the other person could have been with someone else prior making it easy to develop a disease that could heinously spread. I appreciate this because I go to an institution that is very sexually active and I want to make our campus better. Time to fight the good fight.

The article I chose was about the plant lamp that has been developed by FCB Mayo and the Peruvian Engineering College UTEC. The lamp uses the plant process of photosynthesis to harness nutrients from plants that can be converted into energy and stored into batteries. Essentially giving the world a lamp that does not need conventional electricity. This project started to provide electricity to a remote village in Peru who did not have access to electricity. This village now has 20 plant lamps with the hope of raising money to send more to their village and villages like it.

I chose this article because the concept sounded interesting to me. They made the comparison in the article to how kids in science fairs have used potatoes to make electricity which is what I immediately pictured this plant lamp being. I think that while this might not be the most efficient thing to use in a developed nation it could be very helpful for isolated villages so that they may have electricity to help them in their lives.

The article that I chose to discuss was the Durex ad. Durex is trying very hard to get a condom emoji. With national world AIDS day coming up on December 1st, they are trying to get this emoji. Durex is trying to get 1 million people to use the hashtag #CondomEmoji. The marketing director think that having the condom emoji will help young people to overcome embarrassment around the discussion of safe sex. She also believes that it will raise awareness of the importance of using condoms.

The article caught my attention because when I seen Durex and emoji. It is true when they say that sex sales. I personally don’t think its a bad idea to have the condom emoji. The article states that 80 percent of 18 to 25 year olds use emojis. I believe that if they did make this an emoji, i believe that a lot of people will use it.

My question is, do they believe that if this emoji was made, would more people start wearing condoms? With so many teens having kids at a young age i believe that this is an important subject.
