To be fair, I don't think Prince Valiant was really trying to be much more than pretty pictures of medieval adventures. It feels very fairy tale like.

Maybe that’s true, but the discussion around Prince Valiant is that it was always the “prestige” comic, the one “grownups” liked, in the decades before the development of Will Eisner, Maus, the entire concept of “graphic novels,” etc.

If it was fairy-tale like, I think I’d like it more, but instead, Prince Valiant (after a few early strips) was shockingly grounded: magic didn’t exist, and there were no dragons or fantastical creatures. It was something of an ahead-of-its-time oddity in that it was already its own gritty, realistic reboot.
