The issue with Overwatch’s lore is that these huge gaps that were initially left with the promise of “we’ll explain that later” never ended up being developed. We know the rough timeline, we know that Overwatch had glory years, a downfall and a resurrection. We know why; we know who. But much of the why-and-who is “unspecified thing happened at specified place. These characters were involved but we won’t tell you what they did.”

I assume these events were left out by the story team early on as they figured the yearly in-game story events (think, Uprising. Retribution. Storm Rising. Etc.) would continue beyond the first few years of the game’s lifespan (2017-19) The thing is, with the reinvention of the future roadmap and the announcement of OW2, those events stopped. Because they were, essentially, just dropping exciting bits of lore they could just as well reveal with this new gameplay- this new engine.

Except, PvE never came. Every month it seems Blizzard fires more of Team 4’s story department and finds some ridiculous reason to justify the incorrect lore they sprinkle into their sparse tweets. The heroes don’t even have accurate canon ages anymore, it’s getting ridiculous.

Every new hero added to the game means a more convoluted plot. They all have to tie into the main story somehow, and trying to shoehorn characters into the lore like that can really fuck things up. (See Kiriko, and how she completely interferes both age-wise and story-wise with the Shimadas.) Any heroes that aren’t shoved into somewhere they shouldn’t be on the big game timeline are likely unaffiliated with Overwatch as a group; they’re all vigilantes or criminals with their own agendas and societies, all muddying up the already convoluted waters of the lone operatives of the universe.

This is because Blizzard have backed themselves into one real tight corner by refusing to develop the story beyond “New Blood”: with Overwatch limited in numbers and relying mainly on the return of old members, and these ‘old members’ being similarly limited in number (to those previously mentioned in prior lore drops), it’s increasingly difficult to just say “Overwatch hired x new character.”

Because Overwatch can’t gain new personalities if Overwatch is in story limbo. Winston can’t meet Venture and remark on how their talents could be used to fight Talon on a larger scale- because Winston, as far as we know, is still stuck in that same Paris street we left him on in Zero Hour. Mei can’t meet Juno and explain to her that she can save her family on Mars with the support of her colleagues- because Mei, as far as we know, has just started settling into Watchpoint Gibraltar.

The story ball rolls slower than the money-making-new-content ball, unfortunately. And Overwatch will never be ‘back’.

To me, this is what ruins the story. It’s so out of context and out of line, that nothing can move on or even be filled in. There’s too many holes in the block of cheese so to speak. They either rushed this story and forgot to lay the tracks or didn’t pay attention to the minute details. I will never understand the part of the fandom that is fine that the story mode is gone, as we weren’t excited for the gameplay but for the chance to finally see some progress. The cutscenes were the most we ever saw of Torb, Lucio and Brig. But even then it isn’t much.

Some characters are still stuck being the description they were in their release year. And some were just jumbled since the start like Kiriko, or already aren’t taken full advantage of such as Lifeweaver’s need to restore nature which I want to see more of

Why do we get all this information about Genji when we don’t even really know Tracer, the actual face of the game? Why are characters like Symm and Lucio constantly shafted to the point where they are not even allowed to have a real cameo in the existing comics?

Why do you think ‘making the story up as you go without a plan’ is a good idea?

Why does your metaphor for oppression suck so much? + If we are supposed to sympathize with the omnics, then maybe don’t write missions and brawls where we are supposed to kill them en-masse

Why do you refuse to respond to valid concerns and criticism and call constructive feedback ‘being yelled at on twitter’

Why is the lore still coming out at such a slow pace? Especially for charactes like Lucio who could have a comic every second because his story would not interfere with the OW story and therefore wouldn’t need much planning

Do you have anyone on your team that checks the releases for inconsistencies or contradictions? because it doesn’t seem like it.

Why do the retcons only happen half-assed? Why do you not plan to correct the past pictures that have mistakes in them and continue to confuse people? You cannot blame people for being ?? at your shit when you refuse to fucking fix your screw-ups
