It was the worst sort of news to read in the Prophet. Lists of the deceased were infinitely worse than anything else. Particularly in situations like these. Attacks always equated to death and destruction, but knowing as much didn’t make it any easier. Worse still, knowing some of them and Selina had known Fabian well. Seven years in school together had proven that, everything else out of the equation. More than that, she understood the pain that came from losing a younger brother, one with a twin at that. An uncannily similar situation, devasating. Distinct. The ache of missing Darian was stronger today than most.
Condolensces never did any good, but she had to do something. Silent presence, anything. Leaving even, if it was better. “I can fend the visitors if you need a break, Molly.” She offered, quietly. Selina had talked to Darian too, found herself doing it still at times. “– or I can go, too. Whichever you’d prefer.”
Molly was ready to suck all her tears right back up until she noticed it was Selina who’d caught her in a moment of weakness. Selina was one of Molly’s most closest friends and she knew she’d never have to hide anything from her. “The worst part is that I don’t know half these people.” Molly frowned, lips trembling as she covered her mouth with her hand.
“They’re all telling me sorry and all these things and I don’t know them-- I know they’re grieving and of course I don’t know all Fabians friends but.. I don’t know what to say to them. I just sort of stare until Arthur speaks up.” Molly leaned back against the wall, head to the sky and eyes closed. “I want this nightmare to be over, Sel.”

It’s not that Astrid wasn’t close to anyone in the community, but had always felt disconnected from it. She started Hogwarts with every other eleven year old but it felt like they all already knew each other and during holidays, most seemed to have somewhere to go. Astrid was too far from home to be able to make the trek each year. So when the attack happened on the Ministry, she didn’t know what to think.
Everyone around her was losing everything and everyone. Astrid saw it on a daily basis at St. Mungo’s but it was easy to keep herself separate from what she saw. Her insides had a callous around it — although it was a callous she had formed on her own. Astrid didn’t want to lose anything so did all she could to keep it that way.
Astrid knew Fabian, having only been one year ahead of him. Something about his death bothered her. He was a pureblood and a talented wizard. She had a creature’s blood inside her and if that were found out — if anything were found out about her — she would be the biggest target there ever was. Because of her conflicts, Astrid was pulled to visit the Weasley’s home.
No one answered the door when she knocked but it was ajar. A surprise considering. Sliding inside, she pushed the door closed and turned the lock. Astrid didn’t want anyone coming in to harm the family. She could only imagine the pain they were already feeling so to be attacked again …she didn’t want that for them.
Astrid found Molly hiding in the kitchen, sobbing in palpable pain and talking to Fabian who was, obviously, no longer there. Astrid sighed to herself. She wasn’t well versed in helping others with their emotions but wasn’t impervious to righteous tears.
“Molly,” Astrid kept her distance. “I — I’m sorry for your loss.” It was a trite statement and she shook her head in disgust at her own words. “What I mean to say is,” she stuttered, “…I saw you talking to Fabian and I hope he can help you through this.”
Molly didn’t want people to worry about her or how she was coping in all of this-- she was trying so hard to keep it together that if someone prodded just enough, she knew she’d completely lose it over Fabian. When people came to send their condolences, Molly was silent and let Arthur do most of the talking. She knew she could get snippy sometimes and didn’t want to make anyone feel worse than they probably already did. Merlin, Fabian was probably snickering at the fact that Molly had to bite her tongue to keep from snapping at some poor soul she barely knew.
“Oh-- Astrid.” Molly quickly wiped under her eyes as she had company join her in the kitchen. Molly knew Astrid only in passing really, but everyone who went to Hogwarts together had a strange, unspoken bond with one another. “Thank you, we appreciate the concern. I hope you’re doing well during this time...” Molly quietly recited exactly what Arthur told her to in case she was left alone with somebody.

Arthur allowed Molly to move away from him, trying to keep his patience but feeling the stress and frustration of the past few days start to bubble to the surface. Arthur was patient by nature, but he was grieving as well—and both of them were very different in the ways they handled their grief. He wanted something to hold onto, something physical he could show his boys to remind them of who their uncle was and why they should be proud. He wanted to hold onto it because when he ran his fingers over the dent, he could remember how sheepishly Fabian had apologized to Molly and Arthur for letting the watch get stepped on by a dragon chick.
“I asked for it, all right?” he finally snapped, immediately feeling guilty for letting the venom into his voice. It wasn’t her fault they were different—usually, that difference was what brought them together. Arthur didn’t want to let it push them apart. “I wanted something to hold onto. I wanted something we could give to Bill or Charlie when they come of age. I want to point at it and remind them of who their uncle was and I want to hold onto it because I miss him.” He drew in a deep breath, realizing with a start Arthur ducked his head. He just felt defeated. He felt like he was doing everything wrong. “I’m sorry. I should have asked you.”
Molly’s brows raised when Arthur finally snapped, a hand going to her chest as she felt her heart sting from the sharpness of his tone. “You could’ve asked me.” She said quietly, “You could’ve asked me first before it just gets thrown onto me that we have it. I’m not-- I don’t hold onto things, Arthur. To me, that’s Gideon’s watch and he loved it and he always had it with him and I’d never want him to be without it.” Molly tried to reason with Arthur as she just stared at the watch that had lost it’s owner. Seeing it on the counter immediately led her to think she needed to chase after Fabian to give it back-- only she couldn’t.
“I love that you want to give it to one of the boys, or to even let Gideon have it. I think it’s sweet and sentimental, but I can’t look at it without feeling like I let my whole family down. My parents are a wreck, Fabian was the one who visited them most and made sure they were getting along fine. Gideon lost his best friend in the entire world and I lost my baby brother who was always counting on me.” Molly turned the stove off and wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. “I’m not ready to deal with his things yet, Artie.”
◎ Do you have a favourite kid?
“Now, now I love all my boys dearly– but Percy is such a mother’s boy! Charlie, Bill, Fred, and George love Arthur and are always attached to a limb, which I adore, but I love that Percy’s got a soft spot for me.”
◎ would you give up gideon if it meant you could have fabian back?
“I would like the time that it took me to read and process this back…”

Molly had managed to get out of bed now. She had managed to get dressed and somewhat do her hair and make breakfast for the boys. Since Arthur lost his job at the Ministry, Molly took to working the longer midday shifts rather than the graveyard ones. She enjoyed the metal charming work that she did and found each trinket to be extremely unique from the last.
That afternoon, she was on the train-- staring off into space as she thought about Fabian. Sometimes she forgot and she would try to call him or she’d wonder what he’d be doing at a given moment. At that moment on the train, she was wondering if he and Gideon would want to come over for dinner. Molly snapped out when she heard her name. “Hello, Rita...”

Molly had hired Lucy to give Billy and Charlie some potions lessons for almost a year now. The boys were beginning to express interest in mixing things together at home, and Molly preferred that they do it in a safe environment with a professional. Molly hardly passed potions at Hogwarts, and Arthur was usually busy with work-- or rather now finding work. She approached Lucy’s doorstep with her two oldest boys right beside her, knocking on the door as she balanced Percy on her hip. “Hey,” Molly smiled politely, “I know it may not be a good time but they were really excited about potions with Miss Lucy.” Molly knew everyone was going through a lot right now, especially her own family, and she hoped she hadn’t caught Lucy at an inconvenient moment.

“My natural hair is very, very bright red– like mistake me for a stop sign red. Ever since I was little I got teased with Raggedy Ann or the red headed troll dolls. So at the start of fourth year, I dyed my hair blonde for a long time, then I did brunette. Eventually by my sixth year I stopped giving two shits and did it pink, purple, and green at various points in time. Now though, my hair is so fried that I can’t be as experimental with it– it’s currently brown but maybe one day I’ll get tired and let it go back to red…”
For every “⏳” I receive, my muse will openly talk about a bit of their backstory.

Gideon took a few steps back, wiping the tears from their face. Of course, as soon as they walked in, they felt as if they were being blamed—Fabian wouldn’t have been lonely if they were there. “I don’t know, Molly.” They ran a hand through their hair, clicking the mint against their teeth again and wishing they hadn’t come here at all. They walked towards the kitchen, leaning against the counter. They felt dizzy—their head ached from crying and they just needed to lie down, but Molly seemed intent on taking care of them, so they would let her. It would be selfish if he didn’t; he knew this was how she coped.
He looked down at his hands for a moment and that was when he caught sight of the watch. He’d recognize it anywhere. “This is Fabian’s watch.” Gideon picked it up, rubbing their thumb over the face of it before flipping it over, running their thumb over the engraving now. In delicate lettering, the watch read Fabian Prewett, just like theirs read Gideon Prewett. Gideon took a shuddering breath. “Where did you get this?”
Molly nodded, wiping her face dry before turning back to the kitchen. Molly was a caretaker and that was really all she knew-- their parents were young when the twins were born, even younger when Molly was, so she spent a lot of her childhood raising Gideon and Fabian. Then Molly herself fell pregnant at a young age herself and decided she wanted a family straight out of school. Despite her rebellious nature in school, Molly felt her purpose was to take care of those around her. She felt if she didn’t, things would fall apart without her. Slowly she was realizing things would fall apart no matter how hard she tried.
“Arthur brought it. He said a nurse gave it to him.” Molly frowned, going back over the argument she and Arthur had just moments before Gideon had arrived. “Can you believe they just took it off him? Like he was there for them to just go through his pockets and shit.” Molly shook her head as she put a kettle on the stove, crossing her arms as she stared at it. “You can have it, if you’d like...”
