Do you do everything for an entire value at once and then move on to the next value, or are you continuously switching between lighter and darker values as you go? Do you choose a limited number of them to work with or just scale up and down as much as you want?

Well, what I consider the most important part on single color sketches is that you have to make sure to separate the light area and shadow area. Actually I didn’t put a much effort for dividing values in those rough sketches I uploaded , since it was an only doodles..but when I work on more real full scale pieces I start with using just only two tones on it!Once I divided them accurately then I start adding some occlusion shadows and reflective light on it. And make sure the most light tone in shadow area is darker then the most dark tone in light area. As long as you’ve clearly separated the light and shadow areas, there’s no need to limit the number of tones afterward. Rather than focusing on the number of tones, it’s better to pay attention to the range of each tone.
