sleepless night;
@mnxiao
Life is difficult, but it moves on.
Life doesnât care about tragedies: nightmares of being hunted by wolves, forty-eight hours without sleep, and screaming into pillows because of overloaded senses and disobedient bodies. He normally goes to Kimiâs place during nights like these â nights where life roundhouses him square in the face. But, nights with her get intimate fast. He canât handle that after two sleepless nights. Instead, he finds himself knocking on Xiaoâs door late at night. Sunggyu would rather get knocked out by a hunter than go through a third night without sleep. So with foam nose plugs and cotton stuffed in his ears, he bounces his knuckles off the creatureâs door. It cracks. He curses. He tries being more gentle, lest his new beastly strength busts a hole through the wood. âItâs Sunggyu,â he says. âYou know, the Russian.â
He doesnât know how many people named Sunggyu this guy might know. Back in Saint Petersburg, his name had been one-of-a-kind. Now, he was one in a dozen of Sunggyu, Seongyu, and Sungkyu walking around the booming city. With a sigh that almost lodges out his nose plugs, he speaks again. His voice is nasally when all stuffed up, but at least his sense of smell wonât give him a migraine. âLet me in,â he says. âI havenât slept in two nights. This is night number three. I cantâŚcanâtâŚseventy-two hours, I just canât.â

mnbaekhyun:
The way Sunggyu remembered what happened was rather amusing to the hunter, Baekhyun even letting out a short laugh. Honestly, the guy shouldnât be beating himself up too much. He did a lot, more than Baek could do, and he knew that, so he was thankful. The hunter was perfectly content with just listening to the otherâs own self doubt, not saying anything but just listening and thinking how he could explain how much he owed Sunggyu right now without sounding tooâŚ. Well, too kind.Â
However while still in thought his hand was moved. Glancing over with brows raised there was no hesitation, no tensing of his muscles as the werewolf pulled the hand over to rest on his head. He really should have tugged back a little bit, right? After all, the guy did just bite him. Laughing to himself again, Baekhyun couldnât help but find it amusing how he would honestly be so relaxed against a supernatural creature that literally had a taste of his blood.Â
âAh, my arm is fine, donât worry about it.â Not exactly true, it still hurt like a bitch, and he knew heâd have to clean it relatively soon, especially will all the germs that could have been residing in the wolfâs mouth. Still, it was a lot better than it could be.Â
âHonestly, you shouldnât be worrying about me. Youâre the one that used your head as a fucking wrecking ball.â Gaze lowering to the ground the hunterâs tongue peeked out, wetting his lips. He knew what he had to say, but it sure as hell wasnât going to be easy. âHowever, it is the only thing that make me think that maybe you should be allowed around people. Back there I may have gone a little too far⌠No, thereâs no denying I went too far. I swore an oath to protect the innocent, you know. Itâs why I didnât want to leave but⌠Honestly if you hadnât controlled yourself, I wouldnât have achieved anything other than distracted you for maybe a few minutes. I would have been dead, and so would have other people. Innocent people. You did a lot more that I ever could have. And IâmâŚ.â Trailing off, Baekhyun took a deep breath. Honestly, why did he have such a hard time with saying he was sorry? With saying he was wrong?Â
âIt wasnât your fault. Bad temper or not, what happened wasnât on you.â That was about as close as it was going to get. Maybe eventually heâd be able to swallow his pride and actually apologize, but that day was not today. Smile pulling at his lips again, Baekhyun decided he had enough negativity for once, and he even moved his fingers to rub gently at Sunggyuâs scalp.Â
âHowever, if you start peeing on trees, Iâm holding you fully responsible. Thereâs only so much you can blame on otherâs, you know.âÂ
âThings couldâve gone bad,â he murmurs. âWhat if thereâs a next time? Where I donât control myself? I donât have a personality thatâs good match for being a werewolf. I feel angry all the time, ever since I was small boy. Iâd feel frustrated and punch at whatever was in front of me, and I still do. I have trouble with your language, but I think the word for that is rage. Do you trust a wolf like that? Itâs not good for a person and itâs very not good now that I am...something different than a person. Youâve probably hunted nicer wolves than me. If it happens to other wolves -- ones with nice tempers! -- then it can happen to me. It can happen to me, right? And then you will kill me like all the others.â Â
Thereâs no going back. Whether the hunter apologized directly or not, Sunggyuâs mind wouldnât change. Apologies wonât take back the realization of what heâs capable of. Nothing can change the sickening feeling souring his stomach whenever he thought about who he was -- of what he was. But, thereâs nothing that can be done except accepting life moves on.
Even if heâs a monster.Â
âTch, are you saying Iâm stronger than you?â he says. âI was just going easy on you.â He punctuates his claim with a pout, but it changes into an involuntary smile when the hunter massages his scalp. His glare softens. His body relaxes. His foot twitches, as embarrassing as that happened to be. Being as easily swayed as a puppy doesnât help his claims of being tougher than Baekhyun, nor does it help anyone take him seriously as a dangerous creature of the night.
The werewolfâs nose twitches when the breeze blows, sending a wave of scents he halfheartedly identifies. As much as it sucks being a wolf, he feels thereâs something liberating about having heightened senses. He felt so much more attuned to the world -- finally connected to something other than swimming pools. Sunggyu also found that same, grounded feeling whenever surrounded by his pack. Having been bitten and turned gave him some unexpected blessings among all the struggling.Â
âMy head will be fine,â he says. âWolves heal with touch, donât you know?â As if to emphasize his statement, his eyes close and he leans into the hunterâs touch with a content sigh. Heâs normally not so docile, but heâs too tired to fight back both exhaustion and a rewired bodyâs need for closeness. âEven I know that and Iâve been wolf for less than three weeks. How long have you hunted?â he asks. âOr is that big secret for you, hm?â
mnzitao:
Taoâs eyes darts following the crouched shape lurking in the back of the alley. Tao was now sure it was a mutt aka were there. He was however slightly confused as to why the wolfs was all over the place, acting out in some sort of frenzy. Growling followed by undignified yelping, followed byâŚ
There was a sound of scuffling in the alley and Tao could see the large body contracting into itself in preparation to attack. The demon took a few steps back. He had his favorite shirt on and designer pants, not to mention his jacket. The last thing he needed was to have them dirtied or worse shredded. Plus blood stains was a bitch to wash.
âNow wait just a minuteâŚâ He started but it was too late. With a curse on his lips he jumped back when the were launched forward with a growl. But instead of a body slamming into his, thereâs a funny sound (Tao could actually hear the sound of claws slipping in a puddle) and the wolf slid on his belly out of the alley.Â
It would be pretty funny, if not for a fact that at any moment the wolf might get up and try to attack Tao again. Three quick steps and Tao grabbed the wolf by its neck, pinning him to the ground.
He is a demon. And he is strong enough to take on a wolf. Especially a young one. âNow, now. It looks like you need to be taught some manners. Behave, or devil my witness I rip out your spine.âÂ
With a huff Tao increased the pressure, his fingers tightly gripping the neck through the thick layer of soft fur. âNow. It seems to me you have a problem here. You canât run around in that state after all. So Iâll be nice and I will let you go. Then I will open my bar and we will wait inside until you change back into human. You are not going to try to attack me. Is that clear? Confirm please.â
The whine emitting from the massive, sharp-toothed creature was less powerful than a puppyâs yawn. Heâs never hesitated to fight anyone until bitten, where his brain and body were instantly rewired to inhibit his rebellious streak. Now that heâs an omega, he naturally submits to the strongest person in the room. It happens so often with wolves that those inclinations have been leaking out when talking to other creatures and even humans. Sunggyu struggles against the demon in a shallow, halfheartedly executed resistance. It looks like heâs wiggling to scratch an itch, rather than free himself. But, what can one expect from a werewolf so young and inexperienced? Heâs hardly three weeks old and therefore, still with a bark worse than his bite. Heâs still teething, learning to coordinate four legs, and forgetting to add flea shampoo to his weekly grocery list.Â
He whines in response to the pinching of his neck. Itâs a borderline howl, as though calling for his alpha to come rescue him. But the tighter heâs grabbed by his scruff, the more he quiets down and becomes limp. Sunggyu doesnât immobilize himself on purpose; his body seems to react on its own. He wonders if itâs similar to how puppies slacken when carried by their mothers, but the thought is brief. There are more important things to be worried about -- important things like a man with enough strength to pin him down.
The wolfâs glowing, yellow irises study the demonâs face. His ears twitch as he listens and itâs again, an involuntary reaction he canât seem to control. He doesnât have much choice in whether or not to adhere to Zitaoâs instructions. Bunkering down somewhere in private until he can figure out how to change back is his safest option, even if he needs to be cautious around such a powerful stranger.Â
âYeah, itâs not like I had any better ideas,â is what he meant to say. It comes out as generic barking, each bark indistinguishable from the next.
Sunggyu weakly nods in return, just in case the demon wasnât fluent in newborn wolf. He wonders how heâll be able to communicate once theyâre inside. Hell, what if he has to take a piss or something? Does he just scratch at the door and find a fire-hydrant? Heâd groan if he could.Â
Itâs going to be a long night.
mnzitao:
@mnsunggyu
Tao usually gives the last call after 1 am. So that by 3 am the bar is closed. Itâs a good hour - 3 am. Itâs like the world needs to reset itself, emptying streets of people and gaining this ephemeral oblique quality, especially in summer, when the dawn is closing in, as if things were rematerializing again to be used later. The demon also likes the complete emptiness of the otherwise busy streets. He likes walking alone through the city, back to his apartment. He is never alone, though - there are many things that go bump in the night, he knows it. After all, Tao is one of those things.Â
Itâs 3:08 am tonight, when he sets up the alarm and closes the bar. The chill air surrounds him when he walks out of back door, a heavy garbage bag slung over his shoulder. His last chore every night is taking out the trash, a thick plastic bag, which he shoves unceremoniously into the container. Wrapping his coat tightly around himself (he loathes being cold), he is about to head home when he stops.
The back alley of behind his pub smells faintly of fear (itâs not a smell per se, but a thick cloud of a feeling and Tao picks up on it right away). His eyes squinting, he stares into the darkness (the street light was broken for some time and the end of the narrow street is always pitch black). He hears a strange sound and he hesitates.Â
âHello?â he speaks out, cocking his head in almost bird-like manner. Two hesitant steps later he calls out again, this time louder, with a bit more conviction that there is someone or something there. He stops when his eyes discern a big form moving at the alleyâs dead end. A big crouched shape. It is not human.Â
His favorite leather jacket is shredded like fabric squares for quilting, but no amount of sewing can salvage the mess. Everything from his t-shirt to sneakers are in tatters, absorbing the murky rainwater puddles left from the night before. The more these accidents happen, the emptier his closet at home becomes. Sunggyu hadnât wanted to transform. Who would purposefully want to trash one of their few remaining clothes? He isnât a fan of streaking all the way home either.
How did he get himself into such a situation in the first place? Heâd been having a smoke one minute, got startled by a vampire passing through, and suddenly felt all his bones crunch into a new shape. The problem with Sunggyu was that once he transformed: he didnât know how to change back. He paces with the click-clacking of nails against the ground, like the trotting of a puppy across kitchen floors. He even stops to sniff at the fallen cigarette, then jump backwards with a sneeze. Itâs almost comical. But the jagged, crammed together teeth and sharp nails hooking onto scrap fabric serves as a reminder that werewolves are natural predators.Â
âHello?â
The newbornâs ears swivel towards the sound and barks in response. âCrap, I forgot he wonât understand me,â he thinks. He growls in pure frustration, like the rumbling of thunder deep within that massive body of his. âWhat if he calls the cops? What if heâs a hunter? Just great.â
Sunggyu steps back. He rubs against the wall behind him and yelps in surprise, more easily spooked than a real puppy. The sensation of being cornered sets alarms ringing in his head. Itâs a great big chorus of: DANGER DANGER DANGER.Â
He lurches forward with his best, defensive snarl and snapping teeth... And slips on a puddle.
Both of his front legs slide out from underneath him. His rear is left sticking in the air and attached to it, a nervous tail twitching. Heâs a harmless thing with more bark than bite. Yet, accidents do happen. When so easily spooked by his own shadow, a human in the wrong place at the wrong time might have a frightened, newborn werewolfâs teeth embedded in their neck.Â
monarchs and swallowtails;
mnxmara:
⯠my heartbeat? â the demon repeated, saccharine laced into each and every of his words. they were spoken with intend, meaning to entice and tempt and being closer where he knew the other was itching to put distance between them. the kiss had him burning, no doubt; most likely from anger and puzzlement than from anything else. and it was true, maraâs heart was jumping like a hare wrecking havoc but the feelings of fear were nothing against a hundreds of years old existence. they were part of his human shell and mara knew to tuck them away as such â at least for the time being. the werewolf doesnât want to play games but mara was burning for it. even as the growling grew louder and goosebumps started to form on his eyes, the small hairs at the back of his neck rising. there was a double meaning that he could read in the werewolfâs words, despite being aware that he certainly didnât mean them as such. it was all fun and games until someone gets hurt. mara kept telling himself the exact same thing; it was the only thought that could tone down the tremble of his limbs and shiver that ran down his spine at the werewolfâs growl. he was intimidating, alright. the yellow eyes and athletic body that did little to hide the strength lingering beneath deceiving skin. there was a beast in the man and he seemed to be looking forward to showing it off. ⯠youâre in charge? â his voice was still smooth, even; a promise for sweet release when the other hadnât even been aware he had been captured. ⯠thatâs fine by me. i prefer taking on a more submissive role, anyway. â mara smiled sweetly; as sweet as his scent, his words, meant to disarm the werewolf long enough to pull his closer again, this time, to press a light and soft kiss against his lips. that would be the game he settled on, despite the shaking of his fingers against the other maleâs nape and the quiver of plush lips. mara didnât pull away again, but lingered close, and fully aware that the werewolf could go for his throat, he tilted his head to bare more of the smooth skin. ⯠you said you donât like to play games? â cool fingers were inching higher up, twisting into smooth and wet strands of hair, ⯠does the same thing still apply if we play by your rules? â
The threatening front heâs built crumbles with one kiss. Thereâs no doubt that heâs caught off guard. The startled gasp, the widening eyes, and the shaking head is proof enough that the demon finally broke through the werewolfâs defenses. His rough fingertips flutter against his lips, lightly tracing where the demon had just planted his kiss. Something didnât seem right. Something didnât taste right. The werewolf sticks out his tongue and swipes it over his lips. Itâs somewhat sweet, somewhat sour, and more potent than hell-fire.
He doesnât know it, but heâd just gotten a small taste of liquid aphrodisiac.Â
The otherâs inviting scent entices him like a fishing lure swaying before the next greatest catch. He canât identify the scent, but its heavenly and inviting like lavender. Maybe it is lavender. The werewolfâs nose twitches and he struggles to decipher the pleasing aroma. With much of the average canineâs brain is devoted to scent, is he truly any different? Plus, heâs become a total sucker for having his hair played with. Here he stood, being toyed by an otherworldly stranger. This isnât good.
He has no choice but to go for the neck.
;Puppy Training
mnbaekhyun:
A strangled cry made itâs way past the hunterâs lips as he felt the added pain of the other biting down more. Was he not going to let go? Baekhyun had already given up the fight, momentarily losing his place in this world. That was until he heard Sunggyu picking up his knife. Confusion stirred inside him, glancing over with narrowed eyes. Â
He was fighting. This wasnât just a fight against him and Baekhyun, this was a fight with himself as well. As soon as his arm was released, the hunter pulled the injured limb close to his body, pushing himself up into a sitting position with his good arm. His still swimming in his own confusion, the pain from the bite not helping at all. He was almost completely lost to the world, shut out completely until the otherâs yelling made him focus on what was actually happening.Â
Shit. Thatâs right.Â
Even the damn werewolf was telling him to run, and he knew he was right. Wincing as he stood, the hunter didnât make a run for the nearest exit, he just stood there. Injured or not, he couldnât allow a threat like this to go unattended. Baekhyun knew he couldnât kill him, his own body would refuse him, but that didnât mean he couldnât fight. He was down an arm, and though he would need both to even have a change against a rampaging wolf, he still couldnât leave. It was his oath, he needed to protect the innocent, and if he ran to save his own life, heâd be going against that oath.Â
So, heâd stay. Even if it cost him his life.Â
Body tensing, there was a slight change of stance as Sunggyu stumbled to the wall. He was going to lose it, right? Jaw clenching the hunter got ready. Heâd never fought a werewolf to just calm them down, itâs always been to kill. This was going to be different. Apparently, more different than expected. Jumping as the werewolf smashed his head into the bricks, Baekhyun held his breath. What the hell was he doing? Once⌠Twice⌠The third time had him out cold. Without a second thought the hunter rushed forward, catching Sunggyu before he slammed to the ground. Biting back a shout, cursing at himself for not thinking straight and using his injured arm to help support the other.Â
âWhat the hell were you even thinking?â He muttered, frowning down at the other before letting out a sigh. He couldnât just leave him here to wake up alone. That wasnât right. As much as he hated it, Sunggyu did a lot better at protecting the innocent than he did today. This was just like before. Even with all this training, he wasnât good enough this time. No, he had to get that out of his mind. Heâd worry about that later, right now he had a knocked out werewolf to take care of.Â
Honestly, he thought it was going to take him forever. With his injured hand it was slow at first, but then after a while he just got sick of the slow pace and just used his injured arm, making the process of moving Sunggyu a lot easier, and well worth the added pain. Taking as many backstreets as he could, he finally got to a park, setting the other in the grass under a tree the hunter took a break, sitting next to him.Â
Glancing down at the damage done, he didnât even hesitate to start ripping at his shirt, using the fabric to wrap it up as efficiently as possible. When he got home heâd clean it and wrap it correctly, but for now he had to just sit patiently and wait. Zipping up his jacket, Baekhyun looked up at the sky, just watching the clouds go by. How strange, he hadnât even realized just how beautiful today was until just now. Was it like this the entire time? Glancing over at the being beside him, a smile pulled at his lips at seeing Sunggyu start to open his eyes.Â
âYou must have one hell of a headache.â He said softly, laughter soon following his statement. âJust try to suck it up and deal with it though, alright? I donât want to end up going to a store to get you medication.âÂ
âWorst hangover ever.â
Sunggyu croaks out those three words with a dry, parched throat still raw from screaming. He doesnât immediately remember what heâs gone through today. All he knows is that his head pounds, his eye-sockets throb, and his body is aching all over. The werewolf runs his tongue along his teeth, all his pearly whites stained sweet with blood. Itâs a taste that caters to the whims and will of the beast inside him.
Itâs also a major reality check.
He pushes himself into a half-sitting position, catches sight of his charred hand, and falls back with a groan. The morningâs humiliation and pain floods into his mind all at once. Most importantly, he feels like he lost something. His uninjured hand pats himself down in a frenzy, then he holds up his palms to make sure all five fingers were attached.Â
Heâs human. No, his appearance is whatâs human. Inside his heart is nothing more than a wild beast.Â
âWas all that real?â he asks. He wants to believe itâs all a dream, but the flesh hanging off his right palm from gripping silver tells him otherwise. What happened in the alleyway couldnât possibly real. His impulsiveness never involved his humanity slipping through his fingers. He wonât accept it. He canât accept it. But, heâs afraid that he canât fight against a process already begun. âI think Iâm getting worse,â he admits. His tongue sticks out and swipes over bloodstained lips in a sluggish, lazy way. Some of itâs his own blood, but the streaks down his chin and across his cheeks came from the hunterâs wound.Â
It tastes nice. Sunggyu hates that it tastes nice.
Blood wonât make him suddenly behave like a shark. The sweet scent and taste is more of a concern on a full moon, when everyone but his alpha are hardwired to be killing machines. His instincts to flare in excitement and if he hadnât been tired, increased aggression may have followed. If Baekhyun wanted to kill him, now would be the perfect opportunity. Heâs exhausted in both body and mind; he couldnât escape if he tried. Did he even want to escape? Flashes of fear flicker in his eyes. He wonât say it aloud, but heâs more frightened by himself than the hunter. âWhatâs happening to me?â he mumbles. âYouâre lucky I donât have diseases, asshole.â
Heâs rude and petulant is ever. Thatâs one thing left unchanged after the bite. Heâs definitely feeling like his usual self.
The werewolf attempts sitting up on his own and yelps the moment his injured hand presses against grass. It takes an overwhelming amount of strength not to lick it, even with bubbling blisters and specks of dirt threatening to make him vomit. He flops backwards and clutches his hands to his chest. Out of all his scrapes, scratches, and newfound dent in his skull, itâs his hand that hurts the most. Sunggyu guards himself with his sharpest, meanest glare, but his pain still shines through his body language. He canât keep on pretending to be tough with a shattered body and mind wearing him down, and heâs completely out of options.Â
Sunggyu reaches for Baekhyunâs hand and in a moment of weakness, pulls so that it could rest atop his head. He smiles. Tension leaves his body in waves because after all, werewolves are affectionate creatures. Touch is what keeps them healthy -- what gets the split skin along his brow to stitch itself back together again. He wonders how much the hunter knows about wolves besides the quickest ways to kill them. Sunggyu would be shocked if Baekhyun knew less than him, a total newborn who still thinks wolfsbane is spice used in cooking. âHunter boy,â he says. âAre you sure I should be around people?âÂ
Shame is a laborious weight in his voice as he looks off, gaze flickering from distraction to distraction before finally settling upon Baekhyunâs face once more. The werewolf isnât sure what to think about the other, especially while laying beside him like some breed of lapdog. He keeps a hand pressed atop of Baekhyunâs knuckles, simply so the humanâs touch wonât leave him. Sunggyu not about to call the hunter a friend just because heâs letting the hunter pat his head. He wonât even settle for referring to him as an acquaintance, but heâs not sure he can refer to the man as an enemy either. Rivals is more like it.Â
âHowâs your arm?â he asks. Sunggyuâs eyes drift towards the wound, now firmly wrapped in the hunterâs shirt. The werewolf canât help but imagine the mess of delicious flesh underneath, which makes him gag and makes his stomach growl both at the same time. Shame lowers his gaze once more. âDidnât mean it,â he says. âI donât know whatâs happening to me. Iâve always had bad temper, but never like this before. What am I going to do next? Start peeing on trees?â

mnbaekhyun:
The lack of fight in the other only made the hunter strike harder. Why wasnât he fighting back? Didnât he want this all to stop? One trike against Baekhyun, he would take it as a threat against his life. He wouldnât have any reason not to kill the other once that happened. Maybe thatâs why he wasnât fighting back. It was infuriating!Â
Why wonât he just crack already!? One strike back would take away all of the hunterâs doubt, it would shot him that all these beasts were the same. Why was he so adamant on making him see differently? Another swing, knocking the wolf back into a wall. Baekhyun figured that a few swings would do him some good, get his anger out and  they could just get over this, but it wasnât happening. He only seemed to get more and more worked up. Tears welled up in his eyes from the frustration, blurring his vision as he went for another punch, but this time it didnât land.Â
Met with the force of the werewolf lunging forward, the hunter didnât have much time to react, landing hard on his back. It happened so quick that his instincts kicked in, the snapping of the otherâs teeth making him raise an arm in defense, only to have the feeling of teeth ripping through his forearm register in his mind. Letting out a sharp yelp, the hunter tried to pull his arm away, only causing himself more pain.
Wide eyes quickly focused on the other, his heart skipping a beat when all he saw was the very beast heâd been trying to pull out. Without hesitation his free arm moved, hand grabbing at the knife strapped to his side. With one smooth movement he freed the blade from itâs sheath, bringing it up to drive it into the monsterâs neck. He almost did it to, hand raised with the full intent of ending the otherâs life but something stopped him.Â
âStop it.â
Sunggyuâs words instantly brought the hunterâs movements to a halt. Why? Baekhyun asked himself. Why canât I do it? Heâs a monster. He bit me! No⌠He was defending himself. Realization hit him harder than a truck. Sunggyu wasnât a monster, he was just pushed into a monstrosity of a situation. And it was all Baekhyunâs fault.
He laid there, arm bleeding still trapped in the werewolfâs maw, other arm still raised but he had no intention of bringing it back down in the way he had planned before. He couldnât do it. He just couldnât. This wasnât Sunggyuâs fault, it was his own. Without a word he dropped the knife, letting it clamor to the ground. Head moving to the side, he couldnât make himself meet the otherâs eyes anymore. All Sunggyu said before was right. He was a monster. Putting some kid in a situation like this, someone who was probably more terrified about his own change than the hunter was. The pain that he received from the bite, he deserved it. He deserved a lot worse, honestly.Â
âJust release my arm and leave. Weâre done here.â There was no fight left in his voice. This was it. The first werewolf he couldnât kill. What would become of him now? A hunter that couldnât hunt was useless.Â
Heâs a newborn not even three weeks old is pushed until his control breaks, higher thoughts drifting off like during the frenzy of a full moon. Thereâs nothing for him to do but fight it. Heâs trying, but heâs having a hard time letting go. A shiver glides down his body and spreads throughout his body, down to his very fingertips. His jaws tighten. His teeth grind. His tongue drowns underneath fresh blood.Â
Stop it, heâd said. Was he talking to Baekhyun or himself? Sunggyu isnât sure if he can listen to his own pleading.
Heâs always had the experienced members of his pack help calm him down. Whether through instruction or a gentle hand on his shoulder, they guide him through the storm. Itâs like riding waves; he needs to fight until heâs finally floating in calm waters. But tonight, heâs the only person who can save himself.
Sunggyu feels his heartbeat pounding in his ears. almost burning with sensitivity to the cityâs sounds. His jaws push harder and harder into the otherâs arm. Why canât he just let go? Why canât he just stop?
Light reflects off the hunterâs fallen blade, which had clattered only inches away. The werewolf knows that itâs pure silver; heâs investigated all the tools and devices that Kimi stored in her apartment. Heâs bad at paying attention -- hell, he still thinks that wolfsbane is a type of spice. Itâs only through experience that he knows the higher the concentration of silver, the more it fucks you up. Thatâs why he has to grab the knife.Â
Sunggyu wraps his hands around the hilt, squeezes tight, and hears his own flesh sizzling. His palms are burning -- flesh melting and surrounding skin blistering as he holds on. He screams something a cross between man and monster, but he releases Baekhyunâs wrist. The werewolf throws himself backwards, as if fighting against the pull of a magnet. He presses his burnt palm against his chest and canât tell if the throbbing he feels comes from his heart or hand.Â
What had his packmates told him when he gets like this? When heâs young and panicked and the voice inside his head is getting louder? Sunggyuâs shoulder roll in waves as he shivers again, holding back a transformation thatâs on its way. Fear flickers in his eyes like fireworks. But no matter how scared he is, he keeps his gaze locked onto Baekhyun. âYouâre going to get hurt!â he says. âGet away! Leave!â
People are going to get hurt if he doesnât do something.
The tug-of-war game between his mind and body tears him apart, leaving nothing behind but a soul in shambles. He howls in pain -- physical, emotional mental. Itâs hard to keep a rational mind after melting your palms in order to stop biting someone. His nose twitches and nostrils flare at the pungent scent, which only sent him into more of a panic. âGet off your ass and go!â he shouts. âDo you hear me?â
With his undamaged hand, he points to the streets. If Baekhyun doesnât leave now, he might as well be served to a hungry wolf on a silver platter. Sunggyu has always had poor control over his emotions, but now had another voice in his head to worry about. It promised it could teach him how to survive. It promised it could teach him how to thrive. Get aggressive, attack, lash out and everything will be fine. âI canât stop it,â he says. âI donât know how! Iâm g-going to...âÂ
Sunggyu canât finish his thought. It trails off into another frightened cry riddled with grunting and growling. He feels ice picks hacking away at his skull, trying to split bone before he can stop it. By the time he calms down, there could be dozens of people injured or dead. This was it.Â
The werewolfâs panicked glaze flickers throughout the alleyway, pleading for some silver cage to lock himself up in. But, thereâs no such enclosure among garbage and dried blood. Thereâs nothing around him but the bricks heâd been beaten into earlier. Bricks. If he saw stars when Baekhyun smashed his head against the wall, then maybe heâd be able to knock himself out cold. Against every instinct screaming inside his head, he pulls himself to his feet and stumbles towards the nearest brick wall.Â
He shuts his eyes. He takes a shallow breath. He smashes his head against it.Â
Names accompany every smack of flesh and crumbling brick: âKimi.â BANG. âLim.â BANG. âKimi.â BANG.
Third timeâs a charm. The world ceases to exist. Â
Minutes go by, but heâs left with no concept of time -- no concept of anything until a pounding headache brings him back into the world. His eyelashes flutter. His vision is blurry and his warm, brown eyes struggle to focus on whatâs above.

mnsunggyu:
This canât be good.
Sunggyu remains seated because his mind is spinning â thoughts coming in as fragments, senses overloading, and the beast within roaring for attention. If Johnny taught him anything, it was to focus on something comstant. On his first night realizing heâd become a wolf, it had been the ticking of a watch. But with nothing similar at his disposal, he snatches the muffin off the table and follows after the hunter.
He takes small bites. He focuses on the taste. He focuses on the texture as he chews, wincing at his sore teeth. The stress of teething isnt helping the situation at all. Eating helps block out his other senses, but heâs nowhere near calm.
A threatened wolf is a dangerous one. But, letting loose now meant Baekhyun would truly win this fight. âAre you going to let me eat?â he asks. âWaste of money, no?â His accent stumbles through thicker than normal; it grows choppy whenever heâs nervous.
His humanity is snapping like twigs underfoot, so he has no choice but to put up a front. Swagger, bravado, and attitude was how heâs always hidden his feelings. There were very few people in his life that could see the true him hiding underneath: someone kind and warm. But, life has forced him to become tough. Itâs a survival mechanism ever since he was a toddler, holding an infant sister swaddled in blankets while his birth mother ran off. Of being taken by his adoptive father by default, as a mess of paperwork didnât list Lim as having a sibling.
Sunggyu wasnât good enough on his own. To be chosen. To be strong. To stand on his own two feet.
Perhaps thatâs why all his life, running towards gold medals had become his sole focus in life. Heâd always be this way if it werenât for one bite in the dark, where heâd been left vulnerable without explanation. The moonlight had illuminated his vulnerability that night, and itâs continued to do so ever since. âWhere are we going?â he asks, tilting his head to the side. Thereâs nothing around but a shanty alleyway littered with trash. Itâs not exactly the nicest place to find himself being lead to.
âBaekhyun,â he says, only the faintest hint of aggression in his voice. âWhere are we going?â
As soon as the other is by his side, the hunter started moving again. Hands shoved in his pockets he didnât even bother to speak as they moved farther and farther from the crowd. He wasnât sure where he was headed, but he didnât stop to think about it either. He had a great sense of direction, so just following where his feet took him wasnât much of an issue.Â
He doesnât even answer the other even thought he perfectly aware that heâs asking a question. It was mostly because he didnât even know where they were going. His whole body was tense to the point where Baekhyun thought it might suffocate itself.Â
Walking more towards the alley, eyes narrowed as the slight aggression was picked up. Without thinking, his body just reacted. He didnât hesitate, didnât speak a single word, he just turned, a fist already aiming towards the wolfâs face. He was trained in hand to hand, hell, he was a hapkido instructor, but all techniques and training went out the door. This wasnât to keep himself alive, this was just pure confusion letting itself out in the most violent manner. It didnât matter if they hit or not, the hunter was just swinging now, frustration taking over him as he was almost daring the wolf to fight back. How heâd come to this, he didnât know, nor was it the time to worry about it. The consequences of this heâd just deal with later.Â
Sunggyu can't fight back.
The first hit collides with his jawline and leaves a spiderweb of pain stretching along the bone. Funnily enough, his father's Sunday service advice rings in his head. Something about turning the other cheek, was it? Sunggyu doesn't say a word, but turns his face the other way to hit. He taps the untouched cheek with his fingertips.
More swings follow.
His fists clench until his knuckles are bleached white, but he can't make a single swing. Not even if his arms are shaking -- oh, they shake with the force of going against everything he stood for -- can he make a single hit. If he does, the small amount of leverage he had over the hunter would be all for nothing. Sunggyu doesn't want to be the person that ruins the hunter's faith in wolves. He's decides to make a sacrifice, the future laying within each strike his body absorbed.
Flesh smacking against flesh. Cracks of bone echoing from wall to wall. A starry haze blanketing his vision.
It's his sacrifice to the alter; he arrives empty handed with nothing but his body to lay forth. But the taste of his own blood slipping from a broken nose and over split lips tempts him to surrender. It would be easy. How many times has the beast shouting in the back of his mind demanded control? Human rationale can take a back seat and he can reach his full potential. It's such a simple thing for his thoughts to fade away.
His hands clamp over his temples. Fingers twist into his skin, nails go digging for blood, and he squeezes like he wants his skull to crack.
"Niet. Niet. Niet. Niet."
He's so desperate, he doesn't care if Baekhyun can't figure out what he's saying. It takes all he can to stay in control. But, his restraint is fading. It comes in the flashes of yellow glowing in his eyes, yet they continue to plead. Don't push him like this. Don't turn him into something he's not. "I'm not going to fight you," he says. His sentence is punctuated with a snarl.
As he's cornered against an alleyway wall, he clenches his teeth to hold back the howling of a monster. He thinks about the people he loves: Lim's laughter in the morning, Kimi's banter when he teases her, and even his father's homemade dinners from scratch. It's the little things, like the strings of a balloon, that keep his humanity afloat. "Dont be an idiot," he snaps.
Another blow to the face knocks him backwards, causing his skull to smash against brick walls. It leaves a dent behind him; maybe that smash would've killed him without the reinforced skeleton of a wolf. Sunggyu moves on reflex. He's protecting himself as debris slips down the back of shirt, rough edges peeling the skin on his back. He lunges forward with all the strength he can muster, hoping he can pin the other against the ground. His teeth are snapping before his mind can connect, and he tastes something sweet. It's better than any adrenaline rush he's ever had and for a moment, his eyes meet those of his hunter.
There's no Sunggyu in him. There's only the wolf.
His jaw clamps harder. He growls louder. His finger flex as he struggles to shift. But just as quickly as he disappeared, he's back again. Even if his words are muffled by flesh, they're clear enough.
"Stop it."

âYouâre telling meâŚâ he begins. Sunggyu canât finish his sentence because heâs too apalled, having reached a point where all he can do is shake his head. He canât believe what heâs hearing. Hell, he canât believe heâs seeing either: the anger, the fear, and the sheer panic.
Perhaps Baekhyun was more pitiful than him.
âSelfish man,â he says. âThis isnât about teaching me. This is about you. This is about you from the start. Mess with my head so I snap, is that it? Make me into something Iâm not so you can sleep better at night? You can shock me a thousand times, but you wonât get fake smile from me.â
Sunggyu canât even stand to look at the hunter; his eyes focus on the hot chocolate before him, whipped cream melting at the top. He wonders if the hunter bought the drink out of guilt.
He leans back in his seat. He doesnât want to be near the hunter. Baekhyun is a poisonous man and he doesnât want that to rub off on him.
âDo you know what I have fun doing?â he says, raising an eyebrow. âI braid my little sisterâs hair in mornings before school â ever since Iâve been little boy. My father is priest and I never miss Sunday church. I love to swim. I love to post on Instagram. I love fucking up my hands trying to give Kimi silver earrings. But here you are: wanting me to throw that away so YOU feel good. Donât you think Iâm scared of myself? Iâm an animal, but life goes on â it goes on and on and on. Look in the mirror if you want to fight monsters. You can start with yourself.â
Sunggyuâs words fire quickly, mercilessly striking one after another. He closes his eyes and prepares for a shock. After this, he doesnât doubt a painful one is on its way. The defiant streak is coming back stronger than ever, pushing his shoulders back and lifting his chin. Itâs up to Baekhyun to squash it before it becomes too late.
âI wonât let you change me, you selfish, selfish man.â
Selfish? Maybe he was⌠No, he definitely was. From the start, he knew it wasnât about training this newborn werewolf to adapt into society, no it was all about waiting until he fucks up he heâd have a reason to kill him. Itâs all this has been.Â
He never once stopped to think about the bonds this person had. Never thought about his parents, if he had siblings, never really thought how much Kimi could have meant to him. Heâd been so focused on alienating Sunggyu so he wouldnât have any reason not to kill him. But now, whether he liked it or not, Baekhyun knew that if he killed Sunggyu, it would also end up hurting others, hurting humans.Â
And that realization terrified him.Â
He was losing his grip, the otherâs posture alone putting the hunter on edge. It wasnât threatening, but with the doubt in his mind Baekhyun felt like everything was crumbling around him. He had to stop it before this idiot managed to tear down the hatred heâd been building up for the majority of his life. Taking a deep breath, the hunter tried to look as put together as he possibly could, but his legs wouldnât stop shifting, the need to walk around and exert this energy and emotion rising by the second.Â
âWeâre leaving.â The words even surprised himself, so muddled with emotion he just ended up sounding lost. He didnât waste a single moment, leaving everything on the table he just stood up and walked out the door, waiting just outside. He needed to move, he needed to get out of there and⌠AndâŚ. He wasnât sure what, but he knew that being in a closed off spot and being this confused wasnât going to do either of them any good. He expected Sunggyu to follow him, if he didnât heâd just put the remote to good use, but he knew he was not going back in there.
This can't be good.

mnsunggyu:
Sunggyu doesnât realize what heâs doing until insults come flying. Although he winces from each cruel world hurled in his direction, itâs a reality check he needs. He lifts his head. The werewolf blinks at the hunter in a daze, as though heâs awoken from a dream. He reaches for his face and rough, calloused fingers wipe the whipped cream off his nose with newfound grace. âYou make horrible babysitter,â he murmurs.Â
He looks exhausted from his swollen eyes to the trail of tears drying on his cheeks. Heâs a complete wreck that might be beyond being saved by an afternoon snooze. âNo, I take one after work,â he says. Heâs never been ashamed of taking afternoon or midday naps; heâs always incorporated them to boost his performance as an athlete.Â
Sunggyu rests his elbows against the table, then his chin in his hands. He tilts his head, his gaze moving from the hunter to the concrete jungle out the window. Judging by his docile body language alone, he wouldnât put up a fight even if Baekhyun tried locking him up. âMaybe Iâll do nothing,â he says. âYou canât be mad if I do nothing, yes?âÂ
He doesnât move his head, but his gaze flickers back to the hunter.
âWhat more can you want?â he asks. He blinks faster to prevent tears from falling, but itâs too late. âKeep humiliating me? Keep zapping me? Make me hate myself more than I already do? I donât have anything left. You win.â
âI donât want you to win, damnit! I want you to prove that youâre just like those animals out there. The ones that kill and have fun doing it. I want you to be another reason why I know that your kind deserves to be wiped off the face of the earth.â God, where did that come from? Eyes moving to look away from the other, lips pressing into a thin line the hunter straightened in his chair. Throughout the years heâd become a rather quiet individual, not really speaking what he felt. However, it seems that all those years caught up to him and now, at the worst time possible his old habit of talking without any type of filter returned.Â
âSo donât you dare try to make me feel for you. Donât you dare cry in front of me, acting like some sad puppy. Because once I start sympathizing, once I start humanizing you, itâs all over.â Finally looking back at the werewolf, it was uncertain what emotion shone through the most, his anger, or the pure panic that was washing over him.Â
They were all the same. Every single one of them. Heartless. Killers. He had to keep telling himself that. If he didnât, if a single thought of âthey canât all be badâ managed to sneak in, he didnât think heâd be able to kill like heâs trained to for most of his life. If he ended up caring, every time there would be the questions. What if he was wrong? What if they had a family? What if they cared for others so strongly that they wouldnât hurt anything? What if all heâs done was wrong?Â
What if?
âYouâre telling meâŚâ he begins. Sunggyu canât finish his sentence because heâs too apalled, having reached a point where all he can do is shake his head. He canât believe what heâs hearing. Hell, he canât believe heâs seeing either: the anger, the fear, and the sheer panic.

mnbaekhyun:
Frowning at the tone of the otherâs voice, he didnât know how to answer without making this worse. Did he still want to kill him?⌠Honestly, he wasnât sure anymore. Maybe some part of him wanted to know that there was such thing as a good werewolf. Why would he do something like this if he didnât? He wouldnât even dream about bringing an aggressive were into a coffee shop like this with a shock collar as the only defense. Bringing one anywhere public was a huge risk, if they decided to attack, not only would others be in danger, they would have one rude welcome into the world of the supernatural.Â
But Sunggyu hasnât done that. The worst thing he did so far was lick the hunterâs face, and even that wasnât nearly close to being aggressive. Strange⌠Baekhyun was feeling strange. The worry pulling at his face, the slight tightness in his chest⌠He felt bad for putting the other through this. That was, until the werewolf drank his hot coco in a too animistic way for the hunter to ignore.
Thatâs right. He wasnât dealing with some child here. Sunggyu was a monster, a killer. It didnât matter how he used to be while human, his blood was tainted, his mind clouded with instincts of a beast. The same breed of monster that took away all Baekhyunâs hope of living normally, took away his ability to stay out of any business of the supernatural.Â
Nose scrunching up, anger flickered in his gaze as he firmly hit the table closer to Sunggyu, trying to grab his attention. âHey, drink correctly you fucking idiot.â His words and featured might have been harsh, but there was a change. His hand didnât even near the remote. It had been planned to be the only way he would âtrainâ this new wolf, but now he had a thought. Maybe it was too harsh. Still, Sunggyu needed to be corrected.
âAnd stop moping. I swear, this is beginning to feel more and more like Iâm a fucking babysitter. Did you take your nap today?âÂ

monarchs and swallowtails;
mnxmara:
dark brows arched, hidden behind a dark fringe, as the werewolf approached. his voice wasnât what he had expected. neither are the sharp words and the sharper accent. easy to place as it was, mara also found it oddly charming. it wasnât hard to guess that his tingling fingers and excitement bubbling in the pit of his stomach were signs of him strongly hoping and â possibly, wrongly â assuming that he was going to have fun. the werewolf doesnât lack in confidence, that much was for certain. his body easily slid out of the water, sure steps covering the distance between them within a heartbeat. there was no reason for mara to fear a werewolf; he was strong and fast and could get out of any grasp with a blink of his eyes, but that didnât mean that the other male didnât look even slightly intimidating, puffed up and looming over him as he was. somewhere in the back of his mind, mara could acknowledge the fact that he was feeling sparks of fear quickly spreading through his body, causing his muscles to tense and heartbeat to quicken. it was highly irrational; fear mixed with excitement and a healthy dose of amusement and interest. strong fingers grip his sweater and tug, forcing the demon to stumble closer and nearly into the werewolf â a small part of him found it almost regrettable that it didnât get that far after all. a much bigger part, however, was experiencing fear, first hand. a chill chased down his spine when warm breath fanned against his cheek, neck and mara only hesitated a moment before turning his head towards the direction of the werewolfâs face. he was handsome enough, even up close, fear inducement aside. mara found himself wanting to lean in when he was, once again, released and nudged away. it was a stupid thought, but the demon wanted to chase him. no good could come out of hares chasing wolves and the other male seemed to be aware of it, as well, if the pet name dripping with mockery was anything to go by. ⯠iâm not nervous around wolves, â came maraâs reply, tone more even than he should have been able to manage and thick lips once again sprouting a tiny smile. he was bluffing; pushing aside the tremble of his fingertips and quiver to his knees as he stepped closer to the man-beast. ⯠i just donât happen to be a fan of dogs. butâ â and that was where pure boredom took over and decided that, yes, playing with fire was a great idea ( because what did he have to lose? a life full of dull repetition and loneliness was the answer. ) and that he should return the previous favour and wrap slender fingers behind the werewolfâs neck, pulling him closer. it happened in the blink of an eye; mara had gotten close enough to brush his nose agains the werewolfâs â he smelled less like wet dog and more like muddy forrest and fresh leaves from up close â pillowy lips twitching just before he pressed a curt and soft peck against the taller maleâs nose. ⯠i think i like your nose. â and just like that, the tiny smile from before widened, fingers quickly releasing the warm flesh before any unavoidable consequences could follow.
The demon moves with a gracefulness that Sunggyu could never replicate. Theyâre complete opposites: a sly demon with a seductive touch and a confident wolf whose every movement exudes strength. Yet, strength cannot overpower manipulation.Â
Heâs taken by surprise.
He bristles at the touch, as though kissed by thorns. Thereâs nothing comfortable from the kiss of a demon, one supposedly a master of seduction as well. Thereâs a trail of lavender scent when Mara leans back. Itâs like heâs doused himself in an aphrodisiac, but one which calms and entices at the same time.Â
Sunggyuâs heart pounds faster and his eyelids droop. Funny, he thinks itâs kinda like being around Kimi. That girl makes him both the strongest and weakest man on the planet with one look -- makes him fight like a warrior, but could bring him to his knees. But, he didnât like this being done by a stranger. Even with dilated pupils, the werewolf squints sharp like a blade. He has long, delicate lashes looking out of place with such a mean glare.
âYour heartbeat tells a different story.â
His sentence is sharp to start, then loosens near the end. It drifts away dismissively, adding to his push-and-pull style of intimidation. One minute he seems not to care. Then the next minute, heâs at your throat.
âI donât like playing games,â he says. âYou know whoâs in charge here, yes?âÂ
The instincts are kicking in: the rumbling growl, the way he circles around the demon, and the twitch of his nose from processing that heavenly scent. However, he still hasnât mastered shifting on command. He couldnât change now even if he wanted to, even if his life depended on it. The newborn is at the mercy of his beastly side, which flashed now yellowed eyes at their prey as his growling increases in volume.
âIâll answer for you: itâs me.â Â

mnbaekhyun:
Eyes rolling as the usual banter was back, the hunter paused against the counter, brows raised as the looked at his company, just waiting for him to be done before he could spit back another insult. That was, until he saw the sudden color change in Sunggyuâs eyes.Â
Nope. Not good. His own gaze moving around rapidly just to make sure⌠Ah, good. No one seemed to see it. Well, that was one good thing. âGet a hold of yourself you canât justââ Cutting off as the wolf spewed more defiant words, Baekhyun wasnât prepared for what happened next.Â
He broke.Â
The hunterâs eyes widened out of surprise, seeing the tears roll down Sunggyuâs cheeks he was shocked silent for once. For the first time, he actually looked at the other male. He looked young. Probably a few years older than Baekhyun himself, but he was still just a kid. If he was going by looks alone, he had a kind face, and if things had been a little different, the hunter knew that he would have tried initiating a conversation if they had ever ended up in a nice quiet place like this coffee shop. The only thing that ruined it, howeverâŚ.Â
âIâm an animalâ Hearing the soft words ring in his mind Baekhyun couldnât help but feel a pang of guilt. It was true, there was no denying that, but⌠But he was the one that gave him that realization. Heâs the one that took away all that hope of being anything but the monster he was. That was on Baekhyun, no one else.Â
Sure, he was saying he won, but this sure as hell didnât feel like a victory. Gaze lowering the hunter reached out to gently tug on the wolfâs sleeve, leading him over to a table. Motioning to the seat, he moved away only for a few sends, coming back with napkins in his hands. Could he really be worse than a beast? It sure felt like itâŚ. Maybe he went to far.Â
âStay here. Iâll be back with your hot coco and muffin.â He murmured, words soft, almost comforting. Acting on impulse, the human reached out, placing a gentle hand on Sunggyuâs head, ruffling his hair ever so slightly before he turned to get the things they ordered.Â
That was his way of saying sorry. That small touch, and even now he was giving the werewolf space. Itâs not a lot of trust he could give, really just only five feet, six at most, but at least it was something. Returning rather quickly, Baekhyun set the things down on the table and took a seat, keeping his eyes on the werewolf.Â
ââŚ. You okay, Sunggyu?â
Sunggyu mightâve been a punk, but heâs never seriously hurt anybody. Of course, there were rumbles with other kids growing up. They messed around with each other -- black eyes, broken noses, and bruises all over. However, their evenings challenging each other on the streets were mutual and something fun in a way only a good fist-fighter understands. It was mutual; they were all in it for the rush. Heâs clocked kids square in the face for picking on his little sister. In fifth grade, he broke the arm of a seventh grader for bullying a kid who couldnât defend himself. But, heâs never pulled a knife or picked up a metal pipe in hatred. Did he have an attitude? Yes. Did he have anger problems? Yes. Was he a mean-spirited kid? No.
How could he be when heâs so patient with the kids? Thereâs a warm smile on his face that he just canât help when all those little swimmers flock to him for hugs at the end of practice. His exterior is rough -- perhaps, even a little frayed -- but his heart is kind. Sunggyu doesnât fight against the tug on his sleeve. Getting his hair ruffled quiets his crying, but his chest doesnât feel any less broken. He doesnât have the willpower to escape his seat. Hell, he doesnât even reach for the drink and muffin heâd demanded earlier. He thinks that if thereâs punishment, shouldnât there also be rewards? Thatâs how Johnnyâs been teaching him to control his behavior. Sunggyu knew that the hunter had wanted to break him, but Baekhyun succeeded all expectations.Â
âYeah, but why does it matter?â he says. âYou want me dead anyway, donât you?âÂ
The werewolfâs words have gone stale: devoid of his usual fresh, youthful passion and hanging limp in the atmosphere like swirls of dust. He can say heâs fine, but heâs not. He doesnât know if heâll ever be fine. Sunggyu keeps his head down and doesnât care if people see the collar, nor the splotches of red skin from irritation. Thereâs no lingering pain and by being a healthy wolf, would heal within the next minute or so. Itâll heal fast, but thatâs not the only damage he undertakes.Â
He misses Kimi. He misses her more than ever. He rubs his jacket sleeves against his eyes, flickering between yellow and brown faster than the click of a light switch. It makes him look small. It makes him look weak. It makes him look no tougher than a child. And if heâs a child, then Baekhyun is the monster underneath his bed. âIâll be good,â he says softly, no louder than a whisper.Â
Such things are easier said than done. He holds his mug against the table with both hands, lowers his head, and sticks his tongue into his drink. The taste reminds him of home: cherry wood floorboards, winter boots tracking snow inside, heavy quilts thrown over himself and his little sister while they sniffle into hot chocolate. Memories of those simple nights make him feel both happiness and sadness. He squirms in his seat, almost like a puppy wagging its tail, but his eyes are wet with tears. Thereâs no going back to nights like those. Never.
Humans are the ones who live simple lives. Monsters donât deserve happy endings.
What if his father finds out? What if his sister is scared of him? Sunggyu wonders if the rest of his life will be like this: fighting against himself and never truly belonging. Heâs always felt like an outsider, but now he feels like he doesnât even belong among other people. He wonders if he were to ask, if Baekhyun would kill him.Â

mnsunggyu:
Sunggyuâs yelp breaks midway and his voice spikes in pitch, sounding no better than a young boy going through puberty. Embarrassing as it was, at least he sounded human this time. He prays the puppy-like whimpering from earlier wonât come back, simply because itâs humiliating and marks him as a newborn. He feels that he might as well have a neon sign flashing overhead: Just Bitten Yesterday!
âAsshole,â he mumbles. He grinds his teeth together and shuffles forward, sneakers dragging across the floor with each step. Didnât Baekhyun call him irritating earlier? Sunggyu smiles to himself; even if it means a few shocks, it might be worthwhile to test his limits.
The werewolf keeps himself composed. If heâs being well-behaved, then something isnât right. Since when does Sunggyu behave? Â
Itâs soon their turn at the register, so the wolf puts his plan into action. âOne muffin and hot coco,â he says. Sunggyu yanks the hunterâs wrist, using werewolf strength to pull him close. Once more, he loops an arm around Baekhyun. Although this time, itâs around his waist rather than shoulders. He smiles at the cashier, swishes his tongue to work up some saliva, and then he strikes. Â
He leans in to give Baekhyun the biggest, slobbering doggy style kiss on the cheek. He really makes sure that his tongue swipes from cheekbone to chin, just to piss the man off. If it earns him a hundred zaps, itâs still worth it. âMy date promised to pay~!â
Honestly Baekhyun thought this was going to go smoothly. No that wasnât true, he was just hoping nothing would go wrong. As much as heâd be down for killing a werewolf, he couldnât in public like this. It really just wasnât worth it. Well, thatâs when he thought before he got pulled up against Sunggyu. Even the slight physical contact was enough to make his features take on a slightly angry look.Â
Just what was he up to? They werenât walking around anymore, they didnât need to be so close. Opening his mouth the hunter was about to add to the order when the words caught in his mouth as something warm and wet moved along his cheek.Â
For the love of all that was holy, PLEASE let that not have just happened. Hearing the otherâs oh so happy sounding voice ended up just pissing him off more. And what was that? Date? Oh, if he wanted to play like thatâŚ.Â
Easily making himself smile believably, his finger pressed on the button, however it didnât lift back up. He was going to let it shock the wolf as long as it took him to get this out. He knew he wouldnât be able to show his face in this coffee shop again, so he just figured in for a penny, in for a pound! Reaching over, the hunter even pulled at Sunggyuâs clothing to make sure the collar was actually showing, tilting his head slightly as he smiled more.
âAh, add a chai tea to that order, please. I apologize for my date, he doesnât know his manners. Honestly, I told him he really needed to behave in public, and this is what he does. Iâm sure he bothered you, so Iâll be sure to give you a 200 tip, alright, dear?â With his words coming to an end, so did the shocks as he brought both hands out to pay the woman behind the counter. Once the drinks started being made, Baekhyun turned, giving the wolf a glare before tugging him along out of the line so they could wait for their things.Â
âYouâre an asshole, you know that. If you try something like that again, Iâm going to cut your fucking tongue out of your mouth, understand?â
His jaws clamp shut, locking together like pieces of a puzzle. A broken, strangled whimperinf sound bubbles in his throat. Itâs definitely not human. More than anything, it sounds like a puppy finally kicked one too many times.
He thought revenge would be worth the shocks. He thought getting even was worth more than pain and humiliation. He thought he could handle this.
Sunggyu thought wrong.
âShithead!â he says. Thereâs no attitude change at first. Heâs back to his usual insults and growling. But, theres a change when his thin, slender hands reach for the device wrapped around his throat. His fingertips tremble as they graze the material causing him so much agony, in one of a wolfâs most sensitive spots as well.
The trembling is the beginning of his unraveling.
The treatment is affecting him mentally. It magnifies the worries heâs stifled ever since bring bitten: that heâs no better than a wild animal. His eyes flash in color, glowing an inhuman yellow, but he hasnât mastered shifting on command. The color melts into their usual brown, but the change was still there. Heâs trying to hold himself back. Heâs trying to master self-control. Heâs trying.
But, maybe Baekhyunâs right about him. The more heâs ridiculed, the more he feel fragile humanity slipping through his fingers. Heâs had nightmares about this, dreams where he loses himself to the mind of a lowly beast. âIâll do as much as I want! Iâm not going to let you parade me likeâŚlike a-anâŚâ he says.
The werewolfâs bravado is no more. He chokes on his words, voice thickening to a choppy howl in the middle of the shop. His face flushes red and is illuminated by tears slipping down his cheeks in rivers, catching the fluorescent lights from above. Sunggyu â the bad boy, the hooligan, the unbreakable spirit â meets his match. Heâs reduced to nothing but a heaving chest from sobbing faster than he can breathe. It only reaffirms the fact heâs a changed man, made both weaker and stronger at the same time.
Heâs just a kid. Heâs just a newborn. He didnât ask for this.
âIâm an animal.â
The final word is whispered; itâs a dirty word. Itâs a word that breaks through weeks of feverish denial, calling himself a wolf but not realizing the weight of his turning. Hell, he repressed the memories of the night heâd changed. Thereâs nothing but broken bits and pieces, leaving him clueless if it werenât for Johnnyâs intervention.
The tears fall faster and faster. As for the fire in his eyes? The spitfire in his words? Thereâs nothing but a dull stare and panting breaths. âYou win,â he says. âYou win, Baekhyun. Iâm an animal.â
He shuts his eyes.
âBut youâre worse than a beast.â

mnbaekhyun:
A circle, huh? Honestly, Baekhyun wasnât really knowledgeable about just how alphas kept the otherâs at bay, mostly because he was never interested in it. He didnât want to know how they lived, he only wanted to know how to kill them. Eyes rolling at the question, the hunter figured his answer would be obvious.Â
âI think youâre a monster every second of every day. Itâs just in your blood. You canât help it, but that doesnât change that you are a killing machine, and could snap at any second, just like any wild animal.â When Sunggyu brought up the other hunter, Baekhyun couldnât stop the agitated grumble from falling past his lips. That only made it worse to him.Â
Oh yes, just start loving random wild animals and bring them near yourself and everyone you love! What could possibly go wrong? Ugh, it was disgusting. It the end, it would only put more lives in danger, and then otherâs would have their lives affected as well andâ waitâŚ. Did he say something about wanting pups of his own?Â
Jaw clenching Baekhyun shot a dangerous glare at the other, giving the remote in his hand a firm press.
âAhh, sorry. Finger slipped.â Forcing a quick sarcastic smile he didnât give the other much time to complain before pulling out of the werewolfâs reach, walking towards a building and opening the door.Â
âAnd would you look at that, weâre here. Time just really flies when youâre having fun, doesnât it?â Using an overly bubbly tone, Baekhyun moved his hand, motioning for the other to enter.Â
âCome on. Abominations first~â

mnbaekhyun:
âSure, maybe not in danger but you just canât sniff people. What the fuck is wrong with you?â Honestly, it almost made the hunter laugh. As weird and disturbing as it might be to him, a grown man sniffing at everyone like a puppy was just a tad comical.Â
Huh, maybe he was just sick in the head.Â
The smile on his lips was short lived, the otherâs words bringing the hunter into a darker place. Did he really suggest that âvery little changesâ? Surely he had to be kidding. Had he not experienced a full moon yet? Wait, two weeks ago? Did they have a full moon since then? You would think as a hunter, he would be more aware of things like that, but with how busy heâs been lately heâs lucky he can tell last week from last month.Â
Brought out of his own thoughts be the feeling of Suungyuâs arm around his shoulders. His whole body tensed, and instantly he wanted to press the button, however he didnât. Baekhyun wasnât a big fan of physical contact with his friends, let alone a fucking werewolf. Forcing himself to remain calm, the hunter focused on speaking instead of the itchy feeling that had overcome his body.Â
âHave you been through a full moon yet? If not, you at least know what happens, right? Thereâs no true way to have you be 100% safe. I mean, unless I locked you up ever full moon and something tells me youâd like that even less than I would. But you wonât be able to be the same as you were. You wonât have your old mindset. Youâll kill, and Iâm going to have to take you out. Thereâll be no way to get around it.â The amount of times heâs heard âPlease, no, I didnât mean to! I wasnât in my right mindâ was astonishing. It didnât matter to him, though. Even when his father expressed his concerns because âBaekhyun, not all of them are like that. Some really do try to live normal lives.â Yeah, Bullshit.Â
âBut no, Iâm not going to shock you. It wasnât a direct threat, nor are you doing anything too out of the ordinary. As much as Iâd like to, I canât shock you for just being irritating.âÂ
âAre you saying my leader canât do his job?â he asks. âThereâs no chance for accidents with a good leader -- we have rules, we have expectation, and we have circle.â The werewolf holds out his palm and draws a circle with his index finger, trying to convey the perimeter Johnny confined them to. Unless someone wanted to challenge their alpha for a leadership position, they worked out their aggression within the area given to them. Sunggyu accidentally stumbled out of the perimeter last time while trying to chase a squirrel, but his alpha quickly guided him back to the others.
Sunggyu was surprisingly playful during the full moon, more interested with wrestling and trying to please his superiors with animal carcasses. But like the others, he would shred a human to pieces if he caught sight of them. It was a classic case of being comically cute until human flesh released his beastly side.
âI spent the whole night chasing squ--deer.â
That was a close one. Good thing he corrected himself quickly.
âBetter off leaving werewolves in their packs, yes?â he says. âTell me: do you think Iâm monster for the whole month? Why not just on full moon?â
Heâs never been much of a talker, even more so with a distinct language barrier between them, but he could talk about much more than swimming. If something interested him enough, he could talk about it. Perhaps he isnât as eloquent as his younger sister, but the two of them would talk deeply about anything under the sun.Â
âSee, this makes big problem,â he says, shrugging. âWhy canât you be more like Kimi? She only hunts violent people -- and she trusts me coaching. Iâm good with kids, yes? I want some.âÂ
Whoops. He probably shouldnât have said that because of social reasons and the fact heâs talking to a hunter about a potential litter of werewolf puppies. But true to himself, he plays it off with a wave of his hand. âChildren -- er, pups? Should I call them that? I want some. Iâm not saying with that girl, though!âÂ
