the night is long. too long, andrew would say  ━━━━  if he cared enough. another stake-out; another three, four, five coffees he occupies himself with making nicky buy and then subsequently trying to drown himself in. they listen to music and they don’t talk, not until nicky gives a solemn yawn and makes to nudge andrew’s arm  ━━━━  thinking better of it at the last minute and retracting, turning the music down instead to say, “andrew, can you take me home?”

he obliges, of course, because he prefers his own company and it means he can slink off to the diner on third, tucked away behind a rest-stop and treated like one just the same, with the amount of balding, ugly fuckers that sit in the booths and gawp at the employees (one, in-particular, maybe, that he’s all too focused on)  ━━━━  he’d say something, if he didn’t think it’d land him in trouble the foxhole can’t afford, or don’t want, to have to cover up for him. 

three am  ━━━━  that’s when he makes it in, chooses a booth and sits down, taking out one earbud so that he can hear the sounds of a bustling kitchen, despite the time, and re-runs of some bullshit show nobody cares about. this is how he likes it, though. this is why he keeps coming back.
