i wont lie its so disappointing when people see kirio and think of him as NOT a tragic case of abuse and the direct effects of the toxic authority figures around him and see the whole despair reveal as a "classic bait and switch - give us a backstory then subvert the trope! by making him not regret it at all!!" because like!!! YOU FELL FOR IT!!! YOU FOOL!!!

obviously when someone is told everything they do in life is wrong they will start to find comfort in the negative attention!! and when the only positive attention they get is someone who wants to use them congratulating them on doing something wrong they are going to think that doing the wrong thing is good!!

you are a child and you do your best and it never adds up to anything until you hurt and disgust someone and FINALLY someone says "you did the right thing this is how you should be"

people say he is right where he wants to be but he is a high school student who is being used and abused by everyone in his life!!! he is right where hes BEEN CONVINCED he wants to be!!!

the moments where he says hes intrigued by rowdiness and laughter and people being happy - the fact that the author herself says he doesnt lie outright - these moments of genuine softness are not just fake the duality is not a ruse to lure anyone in this is an abuse victim who is being controlled and repeating the things he is taught!!!!

The title he chose for this scene (花より団子 Hana Yori Dango/Dumplings Over Flowers) is a sakuramochi pun that’s referencing a romance manga with the same title (花より男子 Hana Yori Dango/Boys Over Flowers)

It’s also poking fun at the fact that Kiriwo just invited Iruma on a super gay romantic HANAMI DATE and Iruma is so excited to go literally eat Sakura flowers together because in this universe he wouldn’t know how they’re prepared in Japanese culture LMAO 🤤🫶

I also wanted to contextualize the last thing Kiriwo says, the tone is like "silly Iruma wants to eat plants like a sheep but he's so cute and happy I won't ruin it for him". His dialect doesn't always translate 1 to 1 but he is SO charmed. Kiriwo is a freak forever but it’s so meaningful that Hiro also lets us see the side of him that genuinely loves Iruma’s happiness and joy and wants to protect it. I hope we’ll get to see more happy moments of them in the future they are simply TOO CUTE 🥹🌸💘🍡
