It still bothers me that stones get "Healing Crystal" powers based on
Whether it is a pretty color/has a nice appearance
Whether it is common enough to sell for cheap, but rare enough that you can't find one on the ground
It would be such an interesting, absorbing scam idea if more than 0 effort was put into it, this idea that different rocks have different spiritual properties.
You see, rocks are the God-Emperor of autistic special interests. They go click clack. They can be round. You can fidget with them. Like video game characters, they all have different stats. They sometimes have DINOSAURS in them and some of them come from SPACE.
Minerals all have different chemical compositions, crystalline structures, fractures, and hardnesses. Some fluoresce. Some are iridescent. There is so much to memorize.
They are described by cool words like "porphyritic" and "pegmatite" and "cryptocrystalline" and "conchoidal fracture."
There are thousands of minerals. We discover new ones all the time.
"Different rocks have different spiritual abilities!" says the internet. What an absorbing new spirituality trend! So many possibilities!
So I look, and it is just a bunch of sketchy websites assigning zodiacs and chakras to a small handful of common but colorful rocks and cutting them all into the same six-sided prism shape!
A good 50-70% of the most commonly recommended "Healing Crystals" are quartz!Amethyst, aventurine, citrine, onyx, agate, chalcedony, jasper, carnelian, they're all quartz variants! I love quartz! Quartz is great! But where is the appreciation for the unique qualities of rocks?? Iron inclusions, being extrusive, being on the Mohs hardness scale, being shaped??????
You cut the fluorite into a tower!! You lack appreciation for the octahedral fluorite!! You care not for the fluorite octahedra!!!
Where's the effort!!!
nYOOMS.
HELLO. hello I am INTERESTED. Please, if you happen to have any source on actual folkloric stone associations and/or modern witchcrafty stuff that isnāt just This Shit then I would appreciate it. Very much. For reasons that would take up 50,000 pages if you allow me. Please, go on.Ā
So, what you guys may want is the Giant Purple Brick known as "Love Is In The Earth The Crystal and Mineral Encyclopedia The LIITE Fantastic and The Last Testament The Encyclopedia Describing the Metaphysical and Mineralogical Properties of the Mineral Kingdom by Melody"
Bet you thought I was making that title up, didn't you? This brick weighs in at about 975 pages and lists the metaphysical properties of about 1400 rocks, minerals, and crystals, with a full color photo for just about every one of them.
You want to know what number Chalcosiderite vibrates to? Melody's got you covered. (It's 5)
Got a piece of Tin laying around and want to know what to use it for?Melody's figured that out. (Promotes thoughtfulness, clears mental fog, etc.)
Need the Hardness or chemical composition of Zircon? Forget google, Melody's already written it down for you. (7.5 & ZrSiO4)
Do you want detailed sources, a lovingly organized bibliography, and citations everywhere? Pfft, please. Melody is the source.
... wait. :(
There's plenty of downsides to the book, as you might've guessed. Everything is one big [CITATION NEEDED], and the books were, to the best of my knowledge (self?)published in a vanity press in limited quantities making it very hard to come by in current times. But given that various forms of this book (and more abridged versions like "Love Is In The Earth A Kaleidoscope of Crystals ā„ Updated ā„ The Updated Reference Book Describing The Metaphysical Properties of the Mineral Kingdom by Melody") have been around since the 90s - 2000s, it's, uh.
It's entirely possible that Melody actually is the source for a lot (not all, but A LOT) of these sketchy New Age websites assigning zodiac signs, chakras, occasional appropriative nonsense and extremely dubious health benefits to gemstones.
But while these sites may have stolen(?) all of the knowledge about the pretty rocks, they're leaving behind all of her work on Bravoite, Radiolarite, Ulexite, Gypsum, Granite and Graphite.
And as far as "Everything is Quartz"?
Yeah, the Brick has an 80(!!) page section on quartz and it's many, many varieties and configurations.
Given it's out of print status and the fact that it's only available right now from 3rd party resellers for over 4x the price, I tried to find a, *ahem* more accessible copy to link to. Somehow, this book has managed to avoid being pirated. Try usenet or a second hand store, maybe?
Or. OR.
Since I have both the Brick and an abridged brick, if you have the name of a random ass mineral you want the deets on, let me know and I'll take a photo of the page(s) it's on or type it up if it's a short section and send it to you.
There's also a very huge index, so if you want don't know which rocks to use to heal X ailment/body part, enhance Y thing, or you just want a little extra mental boost to beat Sudoku puzzles, well. It's probably in there somewhere.
Thanks internet.
