First thoughts: Delhi
Staying in the Conorought hotel in central Delhi, meant we were tucked away in the local area not far from the main shops. Our first morning saw us taking a walk in the near by area after breakfast to explore Delhi. Unfortunately our morning didn’t get of on a good start. Walking around in the freezing weather past people with bare to nothing on was a very unnerving experience. The poverty can be seen everywhere and people line the sidewalks huddled around small fires or clinging to blankets. Everywhere you look men are peeing in gutters or against walls and you get the constant feeling that someone is watching you.
The saddest moment came as we walked past a man lying on the ground in very little clothing. Originally thinking he was a sleep we stepped past him and continued on down the street. After hitting a dead end after looking into a few shops we continued back to the hotel. Passing the man once again we noticed he hadn’t moved and other men standing by came up to him to see if he was still alive. Sadly he passed away. The sight of his frail body barley covered was confronting and it hit me.
Who does this man belong to.
We moved away and the men picked his body up and put him into a bag while another called for assistance. To everyone else in the street, no one seemed fazed by this sight. It seemed like it happens a lot. Within the first few hours of me being in Delhi I’ve already seen death. I think to myself. This trip is going to test my character and I’m in for a confronting experience of a lifetime. Im already appreciating the small things as I see mothers clinging to new borns trying to keep them warm in the streets and small children begging on behalf of their families.
