Faux Floral Planning...in the midst of global changes
Faux Floral PlanningâŠin the midst of global changes
Silk flowers and faux floral are typically more expensive because of the enjoyment they give day after day, and throughout the years. Dusting petals now and then is about the extent of faux floral care. If you have been out shopping lately, or, perhaps, working with a designer, you might find yourself sticker shocked! Importers and suppliers have increased their prices upwards towards 400% in theâŠ

Warm Welcome!
Recently a friend from California moved to Colorado, about 40 minutes from my home. This past week I received a text that a long time friend I had not seen for many years was also visiting. Oh my gosh⊠excited, blocked the time and made the visit! How sweet are reunions!! InâŠ

August is already here and if you are like me, Iâm savoring each day of beautiful outdoor blooms that continue to thrive. Soon enough, though, late summer heat and September around the bend, our beautiful natural landscape will reflect annual and perennial fatigue. In fact, within 6-8 weeks the Colorado mountains may begin to witness first snow flurries. Perhaps this could be true for the area where you live, too. Now is the time to either consider DIY faux floral creations or purchase already made. Whether planning outdoor faux floral or updating indoor floral decor, change can be a great mood lifter as we say goodbye to summer and move forward into fall. What can you do to get started?
Although we might catch ourselves rolling eyes in frustration when seeing fall, and, even Holiday decor filling craft store shelving, this might actually be an ideal time to pick up great faux stems and greenery before best selections sell out. Use your 40% coupons for regular priced items, which are frequently available through stores like Hobby Lobby, Michaels Crafts and Jo-Ann Fabrics and Crafts. Some of these stores currently have ongoing sales for fall and holiday merchandise.
Shown below are a few seasonal faux floral designs recently created in plastic pot containers for a clientâs front door entrance. A great tip is to use these containers to easily slip into larger outdoor pots as the seasons change. This is an ideal way to simplify changing-out floral and perfect to store when not in use. Filling the larger pots with dirt up to the point where plastic containers are flush with outdoor pots, is the best way to keep arrangements securely in place. A great advantage when using plastic pots is the ability to screw birch wood from the outer bottom of the plastic container, to secure in place. This is a far better alternative than using plaster of Paris or cement!
Also pictured below is a holiday swag. This image gives an example of how using different greenery shades and textures with a dash of red creates front door appeal that can be used throughout the holidays and well into winter months. Consider how you can get the most use from each arrangement, whether DIY or purchased.
To create the most beautiful designs consider balance, color, and texture. Work in odd numbers for floral choices and select stem and greenery options in different textures to create interest. Alternating height will ensure all your best picks are visible and will bring balance to your creation.
Although it might appear premature to begin planning fall and holiday decor, the best selections at sale prices might be now. While we remain COVID-19 cautious and continue to be home based, use this time to get creative and be one step ahead of planning your unique outdoor and indoor seasonal decor!
Seasonal Faux DecorâŠletâs start planning! August is already here and if you are like me, I'm savoring each day of beautiful outdoor blooms that continue to thrive.

Itâs that time of year when New Year home trends pour through email blasts, magazines, and all media advertising! There was a time when I felt a âcurrent and trendyâ home should consider all recommendations. This is not true. Being led by yearly trends can drive most to feeling overwhelmed, perhaps risk depleting the nest-egg, and always feeling obligated to keep up with the times. This is probably not where you want to find yourself.
Below shares 2020 design forecasts that I have read to date and how my husband and I have successfully implemented trends throughout the years. We love our home! It is current with the times and we are not swayed to tackle ongoing remodeling endeavors. If you happen to have some projects on your 2020 list or if you are looking to simply refresh the look of your home, you might find the following ideas helpful.
2020 Home Trends
Warm colors are replacing cool hues. Browns, warm greens and blues as well as beiges in subtle and bold accents, are in. I always thought blues and greens to be in the âcoolâ color spectrum. However, the color value (tint or shade) and chroma (intensity) make a difference. If the blue value carries more of a violet influence it is known as a warm blue. If it has more of a green influence it is known to be a cool blue. Examples of warm blues include; ultramarine, indanthrone, and cobalt blue. Warm colors advance (pop forward) and cool colors recede (rest in the background).

Style & Design
The popular industrial look may be on the way out. Mixing traditional and contemporary, keeping vintage and antique pieces you love mixed with modern choices that have clean lines, is finding a niche in 2020. This is also known as transitional style, which is a combination of different styles, primarily traditional and modern. The prediction for 2020 leaves behind perfect and sparse and is being replaced with not-so-perfect favorite pieces (a few scratches are ok!). An earthy look is forecasted that mirrors European chic rather than 1970âs shaggy and cabin comfy and it appears to be the palate for the new decade. The trend is about bringing the outdoors in, for a welcoming and cozy feel while maintaining a touch of both classic and elegant design. If you have already made an investment, such as in subway tile, that is now deemed outâŠdonât be in a hurry to rip out your walls. If you like what you haveâŠkeep it! There are other ways to bring trendy looks to your home. Forbes magazine shares good information on 2020 design trendsâŠ12 Interior Design Trends Weâll See In 2020. Pick and choose ideas that work for you, to embellish your home with current trends without breaking the bank.
Incorporating New Trends with Existing Décor
Whenever our home needs a refresh, be it simple fixes such as paint or furniture or more involved works such as a bathroom and kitchen remodel or costly window treatments, my husband and I make purchase decisions based on how many years we want it to last. We tend to stick with classic simple designs and neutral colors on major remodeling projects for a long-term solution. We lean on current trends for short-term updates and therefore are far more budget conscious. It is easier and less expensive to paint or wall paper an accent wall, replace throw pillows, blankets and bedding to keep up with trends. Lamps and home décor accessories can quickly change the feel of a room without a major expense or the time involved to make it happen. You can also consider updating something as simple as faux floral arrangements or perhaps tackle something a bit more complicated, such as interior ceiling lighting. Lighting can make a big difference when updating a home. Painting bathroom and kitchen cabinets and replacing cabinet hardware are other quick fixes to bring your home out of the past and into the future.
If you feel a more complicated home refresh is needed, ask friends and family for an interior designer or decorator referral. The Next Door app is also a great resource for referrals. An interior designer is fully certified and licensed and therefore may cost more for education and experience. A decorator with good taste, a great eye, and an impressive track record may cost less to fit your budget. Be prepared to know what style you like best and what will make you and your family most âhomeâ comfortable. Guard against being easily swayed into acquiring more than you need, only to end up with a style that reflects someone elseâs home.
Below are a few of my favorite resources, which offer examples of various design styles that might help you discover your favorites.

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and the same applies to comfort and style. If looking to refresh your home in 2020, determine first what needs replacing. Review online websites, visit local design showrooms and furniture stores, watch HGTV remodel shows, and explore design magazines to find what styles and colors appeal to you. Seek the counsel of an interior designer or decorator to guide you, especially if tackling a complicated remodel, because mistakes can be costly. A home should make you feel comfortable in your own space. You and your family are living it. Guard against seeking outside consensus and prioritize what works best for those living in the home. And, if anyone mentions that your home is nice but not his/her styleâŠthen you made the right decisions for you! Congrats!

Holiday dinner is a week away! Where did this month go?!?! Preparing for the feast and the dining table may have already swapped places with gift shopping and card sending. A few weeks ago Savor the coffeeâŠembracing the moment was posted about intentionally living in the present and fully enjoying life experiences. The holidays are a time to take delight in gathering with friends and family. Often, however, it can be a flurry of activity making sure everything is perfect and using tableware saved for such special occasions such as fine china, crystal, and silver, which leads to special care and hand washing. Hand-painted holiday themed glassware is also popular today and requires special handling. As much as all fine tableware can look lovely on a holiday table, this year I asked myselfâŠâIs it really necessary?â. Below are some suggestions that for an amazing holiday setting without the fuss and hassle of using your finest, especially if entertaining a large group.
White dishes are best for versatility and ideal for a holiday table! I prefer bone china or porcelain over stoneware because of durability, microwave and dishwasher safe, and less expensive than fine china. Mikasa everyday bone china has served me wellâŠnever a crack or chip. And, simply designed dishes can be used to dress-up or dress-down your table. Read Difference Between Fine China, Bone Chine, and Porcelain for additional information that may guide you in your next tableware purchase.
Everyday stemware works just fine in place of fine crystal glasses or painted glasses. If you want a splash of color, add a ribbon. FYIâŠheavy sparkle ribbon will glitter your table and can be messy. One and a half inch (1 1/2âł) ribbon width, I have found, ties best. When stemware is dishwasher ready, have a pair of scissors handy to clip ribbon for disposal. You can also add a sprig of faux red berry for added embellishment.
Chargers offer a great and easy way for a set table to look festive and formal. Hobby Lobby currently has a sale on select chargers. CLICK HERE for an available assortment. Best to purchase in store to be assured color and texture meet your needs.
Cloth napkins also contribute to a theme table setting. I happen to have green cloth napkins. Adding a Christmas tree napkin ring along with a white sparkle pinecone (on sale for .99 cents each at Hobby Lobby) gives each place setting a nice touch of Christmas. Paper napkins work well, too. Tuesday Morning and TJ Max/Home Goods carry beautiful holiday themed napkins, 32 each in a package, for $4.99. You can save on laundry and definitely go the paper napkin route.
A centerpiece can be an arrangement you already display on your dining room table and simply add red berries and holiday touches to dress it for the occasion. This picture shows a before and âChristmasâ after that took little time and was cost effective! Although this arrangement will need to be moved during dinner to open the space and welcome conversation.
If you prefer a centerpiece to remain on the table during dinnerâŠa low arrangement is best. This photo illustrates the centerpiece positioned at the width of the table rather than the length. This allows space for food platters, bread baskets, or water and wine bottles. Also, an awesome hack for candles that wiggle in candleholders is floral clay strip tape available at Michaelâs and Hobby Lobby. Sleek fix for straight candles!
This holiday season plan ahead for the feast to be easier on you and more enjoyable for everyone else! MODIFY your usual routine so all can have more time around the table (not in the kitchen!) to share stories, make memories, and delight in laughter. Be intentional about living in the moment!
From my home to yours, wishing you all the best this holiday season and may your New Year be joy-filled!! Remember, always identify a designated driver so you and all those driving on the road are safe. Look forward to posting the next blogâŠJanuary â 2020!

Around the Holiday Table Holiday dinner is a week away! Where did this month go?!?! Preparing for the feast and the dining table may have already swapped places with gift shopping and card sending.
The holiday season is underway and you may have already unpacked your holiday decorations, dusted off a few pieces wondering which are worth keeping. Donât be too quick to throw out! You might be surprised how easy it is to bring new life to dated and tired holiday dĂ©cor. The following post shares how a clientâs round centerpiece was transformed to a rectangular shape and refreshed to reflect current trends. Below are before and after pictures as well as instructions on how you, too, can bring new life to seasonal dĂ©cor.
SuppliesÂ
Supplies noted below reflect what I used in addition to the clientâs existing greenery and floral. Some items listed are hyperlinked to Hobby Lobby. Other items listed are not hyperlinked because they were either purchased through the trade or are no longer available at stores. When purchasing for the holidays, your best selection is in August through September. Inventory begins to sell out thereafter. Remember this for next year, if you enjoy DIY!
Natural plywood (accommodate the length of your arrangement)
Green craft paint
Felt
Round furniture felt pads, Loweâs
Eucalyptus Bunch, 1 each, Hobby LobbyÂ
Cream and Brown Berry Pick, 2 each, Hobby Lobby
Green Pine Branch, 2 each, Hobby Lobby
Contemporary gold leaf â 2 each
Plum Hydrangea Holiday Spray â 2 each
Muted gold Lemon Foliage â 1 each
Pine Cones (local) â 3 each
Long Needle Pine Spray Pick â 3 each
Staple gun
Wire Cutter
Zip tags
Glue gun
Instructions
Paint the top of the plywood first so the natural wood color doesnât show through the greenery.
While plywood is drying, pull from your existing arrangement all the pieces that you want to reuse.
Gently wipe down and dust off floral with a moist cloth. Place aside.
Size the felt to the bottom of the wood board. If the wood is long, you will need to piece together felt pieces and then glue to the bottom.
Add the round felt pads. Once they stick, it is impossible to remove so carefully place the pads.
Bring together the longest greenery stems; in this case it is the green pine branches. Bind with zip ties.
Position greenery to the plywood and staple gun to the wood board. Add all the greenery, building up the base of the arrangement.
Add floral, strategically placing, using a staple gun.
Using your glue gun, add hot glue around all the staples of what you added to the base of the arrangement so far.
Using your glue gun, strategically add embellishments such as berries, eucalyptus leaves, gold leafing, pine cones, lemon foliage, holiday décor or bulbs, if using such in your arrangement, etc.
LastâŠyou can add ribbon. When a centerpiece is full, however, adding a bow or a ribbon could distract from your center focal point. It is OK for a centerpiece to be without ribbon.
Knowing when to stop embellishing an arrangement is probably the most difficult to decide. A centerpiece/arrangement should be built up and full and yet, still have symmetry and space.
Love how the clientâs centerpiece was transformed from being round to one that is 39âł long. The assortment of added greenery brings fresh appeal to the arrangement. Purple, gold, and white are beautiful and classic colorsâŠa nice change from traditional red and green. It is possible for old to meet new in home dĂ©cor! Carefully select what you love in the centerpiece that you already own and discern which stems are not worth saving. When choosing new greenery, select an assortment of textures such as long needle pine, eucalyptus, blue spruce or short pine and even silver lambs ear would work! Then add floral and season dĂ©cor stems, pinecones, wood branches (natural or gold) for the finishing touches. As you unpack your holiday boxes, consider sprucing up before you throw out!! The result can be amazing!!
