I’ve picked symbols that are directly related to Wicca and witchcraft, as well as symbols which I would like to incorporate into my practices and those that I found interesting. Wands: Pros and Cons

Wands. Used in a witch’s practice as a symbol of air or fire and is used to direct energy in spell work.

I’ve had a lot of trouble figuring out what kind of wand I want to work with. Many witches suggest wooden wands but I can’t stand the texture of wood and it doesn’t feel like the right kind of energy for me. So after looking around for alternatives I made a list of different types of wands and my personal pros and cons for each. Get ready, this is gonna get long.

REMEMBER: This all depends on the kind of practice you’re doing, you don’t need a wand. And you certainly don’t need an expensive one.

one of my favorite things about making a grimoire is personalizing—having fun with my craft and encouraging myself to make it my own. (and to not worry about making it aesthetically pleasing or super neat.)

broom closet ideas:

collect poetry you think is witchy/speaks to your craft

write poetry inspired by your craft (poems can double as spells and vice versa. if someone goes snooping through your book, you can tell them it’s a junk journal/you’re taking up poetry.)

create a playlist of songs that make you feel connected to witchcraft (ex. classical music, indie music, electronic/dance pop music, etc.)

write a song inspired by your craft—lyrics or sheet music

create a witchy movie watch list

create a witchy book to-be-read list

print out artwork that inspires you/speaks to your craft

spray your grimoire with your favorite perfume

spray your favorite essential oil on the pages

talk about your favorite kinds of teas and how you doctor them up (bonus points if you include a teabag on the page)

sketch or paint something

if your grimoire is digital, utilize word art and fun shapes. (look up ‘how to make aesthetic notes in google docs/word.)

write short stories inspired by witchcraft or your experiences in witchcraft. (if unwanted eyes find this, explain that it’s merely a piece of fiction you’re working on.)

come up with slang or abbreviations for commonly used witchy terms

general ideas:

create a bookmark for your physical grimoire—bonus points if the bookmark doubles as your table of contents

create a bookmark using your favorite crystals or pretty rocks you’ve found

create a bookmark with nothing but string/yarn

use string/yarn to decorate a page in your book

physically make your grimoire (make the paper, bind the book, create the cover)

include swatches of fabric you find unique

create/include sewing patterns for magical apparel or accessories

do a lipstick/nail polish swatch page and write what kind of spell corresponds with that color

glue pressed flowers to your pages

get a roll of brown paper from the dollar tree and glue that in your physical book for the ~aesthetic~

for that matter, tear apart unwanted books and use their pages for decorative purposes

or paint over old books and make them your grimoire #recycling

tea stain some pages in your book

paint some pages in your book

create envelopes or pockets in your book to hold things that aren’t constant—such as the moon calendar for each year and holiday dates

create a section to hold letters to your future self (you can have one for one year from now, five years from now, and ten years from now.)

✨Diffuser Spells✨

I’m sure this has been done before, but I haven’t seen anything like this before, so I thought I would make my own! I compiled a list of oil combinations you can put in your diffuser to set the mood or intention for your atmosphere. These are just oils that I already own, but I’m sure there are hundreds of combinations you could make with other oils! These all smell amazing as well 😍

Creating Sigils

Here is a little look into my Grimoire. I use my sigil board frequently as a reference and to draw. You can see the many times erased light pencil marks or worn paper from tracing with my finger. 

I think that my biggest fear when making sigils can be aesthetics. Sometimes we get caught up in that idea that what looks good will be good but sometimes we need to put our trust in the process. 

One thing we can learn from sigils is not everything has to be perfect, or pretty. That includes our craft, and our magical reference books, and the spells we create. Let’s not get caught up in aesthetics and let’s start trusting in the power we have!

now, you might be thinking, “nan, why should i name my grimoire?” well, you don’t have to. this isn't necessary, per se, but it is a fun, personal touch to add to your grimoire. besides, if you practice witchcraft you’re well aware that names have power. naming your book something only you know not only helps you bond with your grimoire, but it adds a layer of protection to it.

before naming think about:

the kind of magick you practice or want to practice

if you practice magick from a certain culture, look into what kinds of names they have given their books in the past

your personal aesthetics

if you're a closet witch, you might want to choose a name that doesn't arouse suspicion. (especially if it will be written on the exterior of your book)

if you're using a digital grimoire/most of your magick is tech magick, you can have some fun with that when naming your book

a note before the name ideas. spice up your book's name by adding of magick/magicks, of witchcraft, the, my, and [insert name]'s book to the beginning or end of it.

book names other than grimoire:

apocrypha (ex. my apocrypha, the apocrypha of witchcraft)

records (ex. [insert name]'s magickal records)

a fun thing to add to your grimoire is your personal correspondences. this can be a section dedicated to the little things that are connected to you and you can use them when tailoring spells or rituals to yourself. think of this like any other correspondence page you would make for a subject (ex. the moon, colors, crystals, herbs, etc.) most of the things i have included down below either come from your birth date or personal preference. my list isn't exhaustive, it's merely a handful of possibilities. i prefer to have my personal correspondence page towards the front of my grimoire along with my beliefs and book blessings because it feels like it really personalizes the book. you can go a step further and include a picture of yourself (printed out or drawn) in this area.
