“Hey, it’s getting pretty dark out. Are you here by yourself? This part of town isn’t safe for someone like you.”
“yakuza” matsus along with totoko
{Ronin}
An arrogant grin cut into Nobuyuki’s cheeks as he returned to his feet, savoring the look of the once-princess beneath him.
“It’s a dream, alright,” He taunted, “But maybe it isn’t as unpleasant as you think. I’ll be back for you later, Lady Tsukimi.”
He turned to exit the tent with flair, his footsteps heavy in the dirt. He was glad to find Akane not far from the exit. She hadn’t tried to run or attract attention, nor had she attempted to ambush him on his way out. Maybe she wasn’t as hopeless as he first assumed.
“Get back in there,” He ordered, jerking his chin in the direction of Tsukimi’s tent. “The Lady is hungry.”
Akane bowed and grabbed a few things from the rock that’d served as Nobuyuki’s workstation. She hurried past him, eager to do as he said, and even more eager to be reunited with her friend and see that she wasn’t hurt.
“Lady Tsukimi?”
Akane called into the tent nervously. She padded inside and lay the Lady’s dinner out beside the cot. It wasn’t much- a pear, a peach, and a bowl of sticky rice- but it promised to be tasty and fresh enough to satisfy. Akane kneeled beside Tsukimi.
“Are you alright? Did he cause you any more trouble?”
Tsukimi shook her head, obviously flustered by what just happened. What had come over her? Her blood was rushing as if she were in the middle of a fight, but... she wasn’t. He had done was come close to her, and all her senses were alerted.
“I’m fine. I’m just--” Her stomach growled once more and she cleared her through, obviously embarrassed. Even when she injured herself, she hated being looked after. Being in the situation she was in, and looking so vulnerable, it seemed to be ten times worse.
She began to eat the food Akane brought her at a steady pace. She didn’t want to eat it too quickly and make herself sick, but at the same time she wanted nothing more than her stomach to be full.
“... He wants to take you to Takaori.” Tsukimi said after swallowing a bite from the peach. “He doesn’t have to say it for me to know. It’s the only reason your still alive... or at least, one of them.” Obviously, Nobuyuki seemed to have plans of his own. But, in the end, his ultimate goal with Akane was to return her to Takaori. What he did with her after that would be none of the mercenaries concern....
“..... Akane. I’m going to ask you something, and I want you to answer me honestly, or I’ll kill you right here.” Tsukimi’s voice suddenly lowered to her usual tone- cold and demanding.
“Why did you tell Nobuyuki you convince me to marry him?”
Hollow World.
Mikiya glared at her, his dark eyes growing bolder and more defined in her shadow. He didn’t know when she’d crawled this close to him, but he couldn’t put any more distance between them. He still had a lot of strength to recover, and a lot of muscle to rebuild. However, there was something to be said for the way he straightened his back, looked her hard in the eye, and deliberately lifted her hand from his body.
“Yes. It does.”
He wasn’t sure if she was referring to the wound in his belly or in his heart. Either way, the answer fit. His wife and daughter had been the most cherished people in his life, more than his father and more than his siblings. A part of him was angry that Tsukimi would accuse him of such a desire, and he wanted to punish her for even suggesting that he would abandon the memory of his wife so quickly.
“It’s one thing to talk about my daughter without permission,” He said quietly, “But don’t you dare bring up my wife.”
His words sounded far too harsh. The fire crackled in response, sizzling as though a spectator in suspense. They’d finished their meal, and Mikiya remembered that they ought to put the flames out. He wished he were well enough to drag himself over and toss dirt on the fire himself, but he knew better than to push his luck. Only rest and nourishment would help him out of this mess.
“I’m not here to hurt you, Tsukimi.” He told her as he resettled himself against the plaster pillar. “Would’ve done it by now if I were. Believe me or don’t, it doesn’t make a difference.”
He wondered what she wanted from him.
She pulled her hand from his grip and frowned. Being the only two somewhat sensible people alive, Tsuki might have thought that he could be a little less of a jerk. Then again, had he been talking about her family, she would have done the same. She was prodding at a wound that was deeper the ones she could see, and she decided against picking at it any longer.
“Once you’re feeling better, I think we should move up higher. We’re practically begging to be killed down here.” Tsukimi stood with a sigh and stepped over to the fire, slowly shoveling dirt onto the flames with her hands as she spoke. “When I was upstairs, it didn’t look like there was an easy way to get to the upper floors, so maybe if we’re lucky we can find somewhere safe to stay for a while.”
Of course, she could only hope. She wondered if at least one of the rooms in this worn down hotel had a usable mattress. She would kill to sleep just one night in a bed... However, as she glanced over at Mikiya, she decided he probably needed it more. He wasn’t going to get any better without proper rest, and he wasn’t getting it down here.
She watched the fire struggle to keep burning, even as she smothered it with dirt. She was almost tempted to stick her hand right in the coals. Would it burn? Would she even care?
Probably not.

Her outburst caught the attention of the entire restaurant, having been the loudest thing to resonate in it that hour. Several heads turned and silence whistled in the air. Then Aozaki began to laugh.
“Heh heh heh heh!” It seemed a man like him ought to have a boisterous laugh, a loud and obnoxious one. But Aozaki’s laugh was far closer to a giggle than a guffaw. It was remarkably entertained.
“You had me going there for a second, Syo! With the way you were treating me and that waiter, goin’ on about how you’re so sorry for being a bother, and so grateful for a lick of attention, I thought you might’ve been an actual lady!”
“But nah, there’s the same good ol’ Syo! Always shooting her mouth off and regretting it a second later!”
He didn’t know it, but Aozaki echoed Mikiya’s rebuke exactly. While Mikiya explained that her temper was a rough, harmful thing, Aozaki seemed to find it endearing. A sign of her true character. He straightened in his seat and grinned at her lopsidedly.
“Are you alright, little lady?” The elderly waiter asked as he delivered a bottle of sake to the table. A pair of small, round cups soon followed, clinking against the wood.
“W-what?” She rubbed her knee, realizing the attention she was bringing to herself. Her face flushed with embarrassment, and she looked as if she were about to shout at Aozaki, but she stopped with her mouth open as she heard him laugh. Slowly, she grinned and held back a few giggles, not wanting to admit her own carelessness was making her laugh.
“I can be a lady when I want to be!” She tried pretending to be angry, but she couldn’t wipe the smile off her face. For a moment, Tsukimi forgot her interaction with Mikiya earlier that day. She forgot how upset it had made her, and she forgot how crass her teacher seemed to be. At the moment, she was having a certain amount of... fun.
Aozaki's words made it sound like her short temper and clumsiness was charming, like they were things that were something to be proud of. She supposed, for a moment, that those what made her... her. She’d always been a hothead, ever since she was a kid. It was what made her stand up to Mikiya when she brought Akane home that fateful evening.
She waved her hand in dismissal, shifting shyly as she nodded. “I-I’m okay.” She nodded, quickly pouring herself a cup of sake. Perhaps it would help cure her nervousness...
Tsukimi made a face after her first sip, quickly putting the cup down as she shook her head. “Eugh!”
The quiet, gentle quality of Tsukimi’s voice took Akane by surprise. She’d been expecting the same anger from the washroom. Indignation, embarrassment, even fear. Some sort of violent rejection, certainly. But when Tsukimi laid down beside her and took her hand, Akane thought that she might learn to like surprises.
She turned onto her side, ignoring the way the rooftop bit hard against her hip, and stared into Tsukimi’s face.
“Are you really sure about that?” She asked. Her tone lacked Tsukimi’s softness, even though it matched its volume. Akane sounded almost cold, disbelieving. “You seemed so upset…”
She couldn’t help herself. The very thing she’d promised to stop resumed before her very eyes. Somehow, their roles reversed: Tsukimi became the bashful, unsure one, and Akane swelled with confidence and security. She leaned a bit closer and rested a hand on Tsukimi’s cheek, turning it towards her.
“I’m going to kiss you again, Tsukimi.” Akane whispered, looking deep into the girl’s eyes. “I hope you don’t mind.”
She pressed their lips together and it was every bit as soft and sweet as she’d imagined. Akane realized she’d been imagining it for some time. The roof tiles were so warm beneath them, the sun and sky warm above them. Their bodies, soon intertwined, became a bubble she didn’t want to leave.
Tsukimi didn’t pull away. Her body tensed as Akane’s lips pressed against hers, as if she was waiting for it to start to hurt. Instead, she felt butterflies flutter in her stomach, and her face flushed with warmth. She didn’t feel pain... She felt quite the opposite.
Her lips parted as she slowly pulled away from the kiss, afraid that if it ended, the happy feeling would be gone. Though, it seemed to linger, and she stared at Akane for a moment before quickly sitting upright, running a hand through her hair with a deep sigh.
“....What do we do now?”
She was hesitant to ask, not wanting to shatter the happy moment she was sharing with her classmate. So they had a moment of self discovery, but where did it go from there? Obviously, the relationship the girls seemed to want to have, or so they thought, couldn’t have possibly fit with their lifestyles. It just didn’t happen. It wasn’t as easy as kissing, as they just had.
“... We’re going to have to keep this a secret, you know.” She looked back at Akane, knowing that she already knew this. Though, she wanted to be sure that Akane knew what she was getting into. “.... Whatever this is...” She hugged her knees close to her chest. She just wanted to be small- to hide from the feeling of dread that seemed to constantly loom over her.
Where should they go from here?
“Do you want to come to my house?” She asked, quickly changing the subject. She didn’t want to give herself, or Akane, any more time to dwell on the question. “I don’t want to go back to class, but we can’t stay up here. My parents won’t mind... ” Tsukimi leaned closer to the younger girl, their foreheads touching as she continued, “if I bring a princess home.”

Aozaki leveled her with a flat stare, not even bothering to watch himself as he shoved his car door shut with one hand.
“You’re a big girl now, Syo,” He said mockingly, “I guess it’s up to you to make sure you don’t drink too much.”
He was tempted to make a joke about being her mother or chaperone, but he was too pissed off. Aozaki locked the car and stalked towards the restaurant’s entrance, hands shoved deep in his pockets. He was hungry after a long day of teaching, and a bit of sake wouldn’t hurt his mood. Maybe even Syo would become more tolerable after a few drinks.
“Come on in, this place isn’t that bad.”
While the outside of the sushi bar looked somewhat unwelcoming, its interior was absolutely dismal. A collection of dusty, battered tables made up the booths section, while a counter that seemed to be left over from an old pub made up the bar section. A couple of shady figures sat in the back with a tray of egg and mackerel sushi. They smoked inside without any apparent consequences. A middle-aged man with a cap swept lazily between tables and noticed when Aozaki walked into the room.
“Oi, boss!” He waved to Aozaki, who apparently deserved such a title. “Haven’t seen ya in a while!”
The waiter blinked twice and then whistled when he spotted Tsukimi in tow.
“You brung a lady friend, boss!”
Aozaki grumbled, “She ain’t no lady friend. And quit callin’ me boss.”
He took a seat at one of the rickety tables. He didn’t gesture for Tsukimi to do the same.
“Goin’ for the regular?” Asked the waiter, an amused grin spread across old, choppy teeth.
“Yeah, and bring some sake.”
“And what’ll you have, lil’ lady?”
Tsuki blushed, her eyes falling to the floor. She didn’t want anyone to get the wrong idea, but, it seemed Aozaki wasn’t going to let that happen.
“You brought me out here, you could at least pretend to enjoy my company.” He huffed, taking a seat before turning to the waiter with the most pleasant of smiles she could muster. “Just some California rolls to start, please.” She wasn’t sure what to order, so she went with something simple. Besides, she didn’t wanna stuff her face full of food in front of her teacher.
However, now that the two of them were in a public place, she felt less inclined to let her guard down. She sat up straight, and she smiled- no looked no more real than a plastic doll.
“I...” She began, but stopped suddenly. Her voice sounded so loud- she cleared her throat, and tried again. “I...really do want to thank you for going out of your way like this. I don’t really... have much to offer you in return.”
She toyed with her fingers in her lap, unable to make eye contact with him. She felt so foolish- he must see her as so childish. Tsukimi wanted to believe it wasn’t true, but too many times it had been proven she could hardly hold her own.
She would probably never make anything of herself.
Her gaze wandered, and she began to think that perhaps something like a secretary job would suit her best. She could just sit at a computer and answer the phone all day- you don’t need to go to school for that!
Maybe Mikiya needs a secretary. She mused. Then on his lunch breaks we could--
NO!
Tsukimi jolted herself out of her own thoughts, slamming her knee against the underside of the table.
“Ow, shit!” The exclaimed, grabbing knee, cradling it as if it would help soothe the pain. “Son of a bitch!”
