I’ve already been forced to reset my password just now, but I’ve also seen several people on my dash who have basically lost their blogs because they had those blogs tied to defunct e-mail addresses they no longer had access to - and tumblr is giving no option for resetting your password without access to the e-mail they send you

If you haven’t been hit with the password reset yet - and it seems to be rolling out in waves - this would be a really good time to be sure your e-mail preferences are up-to-date in your tumblr account. If you can’t access the reset e-mail when they send it to you, you’re locked out. 

Hopefully they’ll fix this or come up with a work-around, but in the meantime, be prepared.

Disclaimer: English isn’t my native language but I tried to translate all the different seeds names etc. as accurate as possible. If any of you find spelling errors or anything else please let me know! :-)

ANIMAL PROTEIN

All dwarf hamsters need animal protein, but the amount of animal protein in their food in percent varies depending on the species:

Dzhungarian dwarf hamsters and Campbell’s dwarf hamster: about 40%

Chinese dwarf hamsters: about 30%

Roborovski’s dwarf hamster: about 10%

Syrians/others: 3-4 times a week 

Almost all mammals are lactose-intolerant when they are no longer breastfed and adults, so do not give them milk, cream, cheese etc. Some people do give their hamsters small amounts lowfat quark, but I would personally not recommend it. Also tofu (not smoked or flavored tofu, the natural one!) and soy yogurt are okay to be fed sometimes as it’s high in protein.

Suitable: dried- mealworms (very fatty, not more than one a day!), freshwater shrimps, prawns, grasshoppers, crickets.

DRY FOOD

The most important food for your hamster is the everyday dry food.  You can mix it up with the animal protein or you store it in different cases (as I prefer to do it). So you can adjust the percentages if your hamster doesn’t like insects that much. Also dried insects start rotting fast so be careful. 

Give 1 or 2 tablespoons a day for dwarfs, 2 tablespoons for Syrians.  Scatter the food in their cage (make sure they can find it) to keep them busy looking for food. Don’t use food bowls for hamsters. 

Unfortunately most so called “hamster food” in pet stores is not suitable as it contains too much sugar. The more artificial it looks the more you should consider not buying it or throwing it away if you did already. Mostly it is terribly unhealthy and not natural at all.  The most unhealthy food in pet stores is the most easily produced and stored so be careful.

Suitable dried food consists of a mix of the following (the food should smell and look really good - not dusty or grey!) 

grass seeds: crested dog’s-tail, tall fescue, orchardgrass, ryegrass

oil seeds: blackseed, safflower, perilla, flax seed, hemp, poppy, sesame, camelina

millet: silver millet, Japan millet, Manna millet, crabgrass, Senegal millet, Sorghum millet

grains: barley, wheat (organic farming), kamut, rye, emmer wheat buckwheat, amaranth. Barley is well suited for all hamsters but all the others should only represent a small percentage of the food mix.

dried herbs, not too much, but important for mineral balance: nettle herb, blackberry leaves, dill, daisies, green oats, hazelnut leaves, shepherd’s purse, chamomile, cornflower blossoms, dandelion roots, lemon balm, parsley, peppermint leaves, marigold flowers, sorrel herb yarrow, sunflowers, plantain herb, chickweed

a little bit of dried vegetables/fruits: beetroot, carrots, celery, fennel, kohlrabi, parsnip, parsley, cucumber, broccoli, pumpkin

nuts: very rarely as they contain too much fat: you can give a quarter of a nut or a sunflower seed every 2-3 days, suitable are: sunflower seeds, peanut, pine nuts, hazelnuts, macadamias, walnuts, pecans, pumpkin seeds 

other ingredients (rarely fed, small percentage only): rice flakes, pea flakes, carob, unsweetened corn flakes, raw noodles (You can give more of these if your hamster is too skinny!) 

VEGETABLES/FRUIT 

1x a day you should give a small amount of vegetables.  Do not give any fruits to dwarfs as they are prone to diabetes! 

For example half a slice of cucumber, a very tiny piece of paprika (smaller than 1cm) and a slice of a carrot.  If your hamster never got any fresh vegetables or fruit in their life give only VERY small amounts in the beginning so they get used to it first. (Otherwise they can get diarrhea.) 

Be careful that your hamster doesn’t hide too much food for too long and change it every day so it can’t get moldy and unhealthy to eat. 

Suitable veggies: fennel, carrots, cucumbers, peppers, fresh corn (only a few corns!), pumpkin, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, beets, zucchini.  Fruits for non dwarfs: apples, tomatoes (the green parts are poisonous, be careful), grapes (no seeds in it), quarter of a strawberry, gooseberries, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries (only one berry a day for NON dwarfs!) 

Do not feed stone fruits, it can cause diarrhea, flatulence and abdominal pain. Do not feed bananas, papaya, mango, raisins etc.

CHEWING 

Make sure to give your hamster something to chew on like fresh or dried branches! 

Do not give them chew toys or anything that’s not natural or even made out of plastic. It can poison or kill them! 

Suitable: Apple and pear branches, alderwood, hazelnut, blueberry bush, currant bush, cottonwood - and dandelion roots.  There are more branches that can be given but sometimes the leaves or fruits are poisonous to hamsters so be careful and inform yourself before you give anything to them. 

OTHER

Give your hamster fresh water every day. Make sure to clean the “slimy” layer in the water bowl. 

Do not feed anything artificially(-ish) looking with sugar in it, do not feed honey or anything “colorful” or if you can’t identify the ingredients. Do not feed them typical treats like “yoghurt drops” etc. They do not need them and it can make them sick. 

Don’t trust any store when they tell you that you can feed hamsters  artificial looking treats or hamster snacks or anything with sugar in it. 

If you happen to have a pregnant hamster, give her a lot more animal protein! They can develop deficiencies which can lead to dead births, the mother eating their children etc. But please do not breed and do not buy animals anywhere. Always adopt. You’ll always find a hamster in your area looking for a new home. 

Hamsters don’t need any additional given vitamins if fed correctly. 

After 4 months dried food should be thrown away and no longer be fed. 

Dried insects go bad pretty fast. Do only buy small amounts. 

Hamster shouldn’t be too fat. Make sure they’ll get enough exercise, a suitable big wheel and a big cage + safe zone to run around.

If your hamster has some kind of food storage chamber you can change the food stored there from time to time and put new food in it, so they feel safer. 

If your hamster has any health issues please ask a knowledgeable vet on how to feed them correctly during this time. 

There is so much more to know about feeding hamsters correctly but for now these are the most important points.

I’m tired of getting these stupid offers to work on people’s “passion projects” for free, usually with the promise of compensation when/if the project takes off. Guess what? I don’t care that you’re passionate about it, I care if you’re competent. When you knock on my door asking for free work, its a clear sign that you aren’t. You might have hopes that your project hits it big and that you’ll eventually get rich off of it, but if you REALLY believed in it, I feel like you’d be more willing to put your own livelihood on the line instead of asking an artist to do it for you. If I do a bunch of free work hoping it’ll pay off, I’m not doing other work that could actually feed me and pay my bills. And what happens when the project doesn’t get funded or some important factor blows up or everyone decides to quit out early? I get screwed. So, no. I don’t want to work on your passion project. Not unless I get paid up front.

None of this “I paid for the art. It is mine.” bullshit, unless the artist actually sells you the copyright (something which has to be stated and never assumed, and something you would have to pay extra for) you can not claim ownership over the piece, even if you paid for it.

And yes, this means you can not alter the work in any way, you can not use it for banners/advertisements/etc., you can not print it, you can not sell copies unless agreed upon with the artist

and artists are also protected under moral rights

meaning that the artist has the right of attribution (the right to be identified and named as the creator of their work), the right against false attribution, and the right of integrity. (Source)

As an INFP, I am very good at sensing the emotional aspects in an argument or debate, and I’ve (proudly) learned to embrace it in my adulthood. It was difficult to accept in my adolescence because logic and rationality from my peers took immediate hold in any conversation, and I couldn’t understand how to articulate my feelings into thoughts. Sometimes, writers find it necessary to add more depth to the world surrounding their characters. I’ve collected a few links that should be helpful in this process. Some of these are better for a fantasy stories, but have ideas that could prove useful for writers of all genres, in one way or another.

MAP GENERATION If you have decided to create your own land mass for the sake of your story, you may be grateful to have this link. Users should read the description below before using, but it is easy to use and helpful for anyone wanting to create a new island or continent. I prefer using this tool over any others I’ve seen online. This website only contains the demo. The full version has more ways to edit the map, but getting the full version requires downloading and having proper software. I’ve found that the demo, on its own, should be enough for anyone who can’t get the full version for one reason or another. However, the link for full version is also on the page, should you want it.

WEATHER AROUND THE WORLD Knowing weather details of areas can be helpful when writing about an area, especially if it’s one you’re not familiar with. This website has the recorded weather of pretty much everywhere on Earth, and even provides averages for the past year in specific areas. It’s great for writers who want an understanding of how the weather in their story might affect the characters. For instance: if the summer heat in an area is consistently over 100 degrees, the characters might be less willing to go outside, and be in need of constant hydration.

FANTASY JOBS THAT AREN’T KNIGHT OR PEASANT Anyone who is writing a story that takes place in a less developed civilization, be it medieval times, or a fantasy world that hasn’t quite hit its industrial revolution, should probably have this list. It’s a simple list of a 100 jobs that you might consider giving to the characters in your story to make them seem like real people. The creator of the list even adds a few at the end for younger characters. Choosing any of them for your story may take some added research, but will be worth the depth added to your story.

FAMILY TREE TOOL If you’ve ever read the series “Lord of the Rings”, you may know that pretty much everyone in the books has a long list of ancestors. While I would never endure such an endeavor, if you feel so inclined to come up with a lineage for your character, this is a tool you can use. It’s easy to use, and allows for adding information beyond name and year of birth/death. You’re able to change what information shows up on the table, and when finished you can even print it out.

HOME DESIGNER So this is good if you have time to kill and really want to do some in-depth building. This tool will let you be the designer of the home of your characters. You’ll get out what you put into it, so if your character lives in a three story, 10 bedroom home, you may have to put in a bit more effort to use this tool effectively. You can also simply create individual rooms, if that’s more along the lines of what you want. Over all, while this tool may take a bit of time to learn, it isn’t very complicated. I suggest it to everyone who wants to explore how the home of their characters looks.

LANGUAGE CREATION If you were thinking about writing your own language, this link will make you decide whether you really want to create your own language, or if you want to give up on the idea entirely. It’s a long process, but is completely spelled out in this link, and the additional pages that the website provides links to. You can also buy the book by the same author for $0.99; but all the information is available for free. Either way, it should be an easy choice to make after reading through what the website has to offer. I think creating a language is for people with more time, patience, and understanding of their own language than I have, but it is certainly fun to think about. The author also discusses different methods people use to create languages, and what is wrong with those methods. I believe this is, by far, the best resource for creating a language.

Yesterday, I hit my official 100 mile mark on the trail (woohoo, only 2,089 to go!). The fire tower behind the trees about a tenth of a mile away is the summit of Albert mountain, where the 100 mile mark is. Albert mountain was no joke and absolutely the hardest climb I’ve had so far; some hand-over-hand on big rocks, couldn’t use my trekking poles, and was generally a steep, straight up climb. Powering through the next couple of days so that I can stay at a hiker hostel for a couple of nights. I’m craving pizza and Caprisun.
