So I was accepted into MoHo and to be completely honest, #MoHonest makes me a bit nervous about accepting the offer. MoHo is my second choice and I was pumped to attend if my first choice denies me but now I'm worried about this. Would you say MoHo is still a great institution IN SPITE of its micro-aggression racism or it has lost its luster BECAUSE of it?

Our aim is not to dissuade anyone from applying or attending MHC. one of our primary goals is to first and foremost make the space safe enough for students of color to speak you. In no way are we saying MHC is a terrible institution. Students of color at PWIs around the nation and the world have been standing up and speaking up about their experiences, so this is not limited to MHC. The only difference is that we want to create the space to have these experiences validated and heard so future MHC students will have that space available.

"Why do you like black music?" inquired several girls (not of color, mind you.)

Really...REALLY.. is this 2014 or 1934? Gosh, even my grandparents bump black musicians. Natking Cole filled the kitchen and house throughout my childhood.

In any sane environment, I would've considered opening one's doors and blasting music (on weekend afternoons) to be a standard social gesture, but not at MoHo.. most definitely not. What happens here? Police reports.. that's what 'ghetto music' elicits. POLICE REPORTS.

2/2 now I'm going to be attending college in a New England and I'm worried comments will only get worse I'm used to the comfort of living in a place that has a lot of people from the same place I was born. I once visited Tennessee and had a horrible experience being Hispanic there so I hope that it won't be the same now that I'm going to be attending a school with a predominantly Caucasian population

1/2 Whenever I say I'm Hispanic "but you're so white, how could you possibly be Hispanic?" When I say I'm from cuba "you must be a good swimmer since you had to come on a raft" I'm really tired of these comments & people trying to dismiss my culture & how I identify because it's not the image that fits their stereotype, I live in Miami which is predominantly Hispanic & I get these comments all the time

It's Not Funny

As soon as my religion was known to her, my friend began spewing stereotype after stereotype, joke after joke "Oh that's weird your nose isn't big at all" or "that's ironic that you spend tons of money because Jews are known to be frugal" "we call the garbage dump next to our house Auschwitz" and "aren't Standardized tests biased towards Jewish people because it was created by a Jew?" Just because you think your jokes are funny doesn't mean I do. Also, just in case you were wondering, the reason why Jews are so "good with money" is because in the 30s and 40s the only job Jews could have were in banks. Jews couldn't own land and couldn't hold any job besides working in banks. I laugh it off because it's so uncomfortable and insulting so please, next time think about what you're actually inferring when you make a comment.

I was wondering if you have any advice for people of color in calling out microagressions? I am part of a club where the president is white and has committed several microaggressions against me and I don't know how to call it out? thanks.

Hi anon,

Something as simple as responding with "that was really problematic because______" can be very helpful. It takes a lot of emotional strength to call aggressors out and it also takes a lot of emotional strength to remain silent. My ability to speak "good English" is not contingent on how many white people were in my life. Actually grew up in a predominately immigrant community of color.

It also bothers me when people cannot pronounce my name. I am South Asian. My name is not that difficult to pronounce, even though it is "foreign." One time a girl completely butchered my name, even though I clearly pronounced it for her. After the meeting, I told her she was saying it wrong. She said, "oh ok, I get it now. Thanks!" The very next day, she was back to pronouncing my name incorrectly. This was really hurtful for me. It's not that hard to learn how to say someone's name.
