How to Play Touhou Games
Touhou Project is a long-running video game series. It’s wildly popular in Japan for its massive cast of cute, tastefully-dressed monster girls, as well as its incredible soundtrack. The fans are also very hardcore; the sheer quantity and quality of Touhou derivative works outnumbers and outclasses that of every other fandom. I dig it.
Lots of times my friends ask me, “How do you get into Touhou Project?” and I answer, “play the games”. This isn’t a bad answer. The games are the heart and lifeblood of the series; they are where the bulk of the characters are introduced, where the gorgeous music comes from, where the plot comes in. They rule.
It’s just also not a good answer, because the main series Touhou games are… bullet hell, one of the most inaccessible genres of game ever. For those who can look at the above image and go “hm, maybe”, I hope to impart some of the things I’ve taught myself over the years about playing this very very hard series.
