“Lui. Right. It’s nice to meet you too.” She pondered if he meant the Castella Cafe or just…Stella City in general. She didn’t know where her new friend had come from, but she knew this city and the fluffy residents were definitely different from anything she knew about.

She motioned for him to follow her and walked over to quiet booth in the corner of the cafe, occasionally stopping and looking back to see if he was still following and hadn’t got caught hovering somewhere else or tripped over a sheep waiter.

She stood next to the booth and waited for him to join her. She hoped her pacing herself for him didn’t come off as patronizing or anything, she didn’t want him to be overwhelmed and all. He seemed so nervous…

She said it was nice, but did she really mean it...? Of course, Hakuno had seemed nothing but nice in the few minutes he had known her, but he can’t help wondering if he’s really just being a bother. If she wasn’t going to comment on how this place was disconcerting, then was she practising ‘if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all’? Then, she would still be being nice, right?

He blinks at her, a little tentative. Sure, he didn’t see anything to suggest she was annoyed in her face, but he could hardly be sure just from that. Lui had become an expert at examining people for traces of irritation, but people could also be good at hiding these things. Then, on the inside, surely there was...

He glances away, sitting down in the booth she picked out and typing for a moment.『 aa, you go get your drink, hakuno-san! i’ll just wait here!! 』If he just stayed out of the way, maybe he’d stop being a nuisance. He held her up, after all.

It’s not that he wasn’t paying attention to where he was going, it’s just that this kid was so short he didn’t notice him. Greed knocked the boy over, some kind of expensive looking device falling to the ground as well. “Whoa,” He caught it before it fell, examining it curiously. “Huh… Looks like this is worth a lot.” He looked down at the kid on the ground, tilting his head to the side.

“Ah I bet I could get a lot of money out of this…” He messed around with it, watching the kid out of the corner of his eye. Greed had no actual intentions of stealing it, but he did want to have some fun at least.

The humiliation was bad enough, but finding that the hand he instinctively reaches out to catch his phone catches nothing was worse. For a moment, he can’t process what has happened, the man’s voice drifting as if he’s underwater. If Lui was underwater, he would most definitely be done for. In this kind of situation, too, he...

Shaking, he pushes himself back onto his feet, fingers pressing against each other as he tries to stay calm. The panic, undeniably, won’t leave his eyes, so much that he probably shouldn’t need words. Please... give it back. That’s all I have. All he can do is shake his head, pointing to his phone and back at his own chest, hoping the stranger would understand. Though... it really had been obvious that it belonged to him, no matter how he thought about it, huh?

From what 2B could gather, there was no pattern to what kinds of people lived in Stella City. Such variety, humans taken from the past, from a future that was different than her own, from an entirely different realm… It still made no sense to her. And the only locals were… sheep. She’d be lying if she said she didn’t question their ulterior motives, or considered the possibility of some ‘mastermind’ behind all this.

Regardless, she already made it her mission to gather as much data as possible, puzzle pieces that might fight together at some point. That’s why she doesn’t have it in her to react negatively to anyone bumping into her – especially someone like this person now. It’s beneficial to meet more people. However, this time she glances down at a face filled with nothing but worry and panic.

“I’m sorry, are you…” She pauses when she feels the tug on her arm and his attempt to… write on it? Tilting her head slightly, she seems baffled by the notion and awkwardly tries to decipher the meaning behind it. ‘O.. K’? Is he unable to speak? “Oh, me? I’m fine. Are you all right though? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.” No, she’s not referring to herself this time.

His head feels light. Ah, right, he was totally fine – the problem was the situation he was in right now. Rather, the problem was probably down to himself after all, when it all came down to his missing voice. In the end, no matter how many strangers he met – Lui usually ended up finding that he was the one causing difficulty when it came to meeting them.

He nods, first – then freezes, as he remembers even that replacement for communication is completely useless. His hand, already instinctively reaching for his phone in his pocket, twitches uncomfortably, as he pulls it back, to self-consciously rub his fingers together. It wasn’t easy, and from her reaction, the lady seemed confused by it as well, but... in the end, he could probably only write on her hand, huh?

Lui, he thinks, if he survives the humiliation of this encounter, would never consider himself someone who likes to express himself through touch, ever again. Spelling out a ‘YES’ on the back of her hand, his primary concern would have to be how quick a hole could come and swallow him up. Of course, his second would be spelling out ‘SORRY’.

With - as expected - the threat of the sheep virus fading away on it’s own, things had returned to what passed for ‘normality’ in this strange sheep-filled place: things were calmer now. Though he’d kept a sharp eye on the papers and what the sheep passing through the office were saying, no cases had come up after, though he did hear sheep nervously bleating rumors about something that might have happened.

Hm - he wouldn’t be surprised if he was called to that later, but with the calmness, Alfendi’s ‘Placid’ side was back. There wasn’t much to do at the moment, so he could rest. At least, that was what he thought before a stranger came into the office. They seemed quite nervous from inital looks.

[ Geez…this kid looks even more scared than the sheep do half the time. >

Potty’s internal commentary inside…Ah? Why were they holding out a phone? He didn’t need to ponder this long, as the stranger typed out on it. Oh. It appeared they needed to type to talk to others, that was fine.

“No, no - it’s quite alright. The motto of the ‘Wool Over Eyes’ room is to take time to listen to everyone, so no appointment is needed.” It almost felt strange, reassuring a texted message. “There aren’t any current cases I’ve been called to, so I have time, also. What was it about that virus you needed to ask?”

He blinks, wondering if he’s come to the wrong place, if it’s a ‘room’ with a name like that. Well, if he were to think about it, wool being involved probably meant it was at least partially official. Glancing around the room for a moment, as if to double check he hadn’t wandered into a dragon’s den, he looks back up at the man before typing again in earnest.『 aaa, thank you... uuu, i was just wondering if everything was really ok. i mean, did the sheep get rid of it??? it just disappeared, so........ i’m happy it went away! but i was wondering if it was properly gone, or would come back at all........ 』

Raising his phone to the stranger to see, he averts his eyes to the floor. Probably, this person couldn’t even answer this question. Even if he was worried about what would become of his systems if the virus came back, even if he was worried about how tired he still felt – he can’t help being conscious that the virus had only been life or death for him.

To keep bothering people about it... he was only being selfish, huh.

Fingers pressing a little tighter around his phone, he pulls it back, adding another line to the message –『 aaa, i’m really sorry. 』When it came down to it, Lui existed to serve humans, even if that future never came to fruit. To ask so much of them, so often, only reminds him that he never fulfilled even a fraction of his purpose.

He hasn’t been able to work for days, and honestly? It’s driving him mad. Nothing to fiddle with, nothing to fix, nothing to distract him from… well, himself. Idle fingers are his worst fear, and he’s living in a nightmare right now. It’s one thing to listen to the sheep outside all the time– at least they’re alive and walking. But if he had to listen to a “baa-d signal” notice one more time, he was going to quit his job. (Not really. He never could. But it sure is vexing.)

Most people would take this time to relax, but… really, what is relaxing? Reading? He’s handled enough books lately. He’s no good at cooking, and biking isn’t really his thing, he much prefers walking–

–not right into people, though. Gaster looks down, instinctively taking a step back after the impact with his arms held out to hopefully catch a poor soul before they embarrassed themself any further. It looks like the other had a similar train of thought. “ Lui… ? “

“ Yes, I’m fine. “ He says slowly, looking the boy over. Ah. Was it… ? “ Are you okay? “

No. That was obviously what he wanted to cry out, and couldn’t – ah, he couldn’t even cry at all. Maybe it was for the better. Like this, perhaps he could successfully lie his way out of it, as if he wouldn’t uselessly give it away with his exhausted trembling. He glances down at his phone, feeling part of him crack at the thought of struggling to get his thoughts across again. Some god, somewhere... must really hate him.

『 i’m fine................ but itss kidna hard to type right no w. u wouldnt know how to fix phones,, would you, gastersan ???? 』Holding out his phone, he gives a weak smile. Even as he thinks he wants to append it, add ‘it’s okay even if you can’t, it isn’t a big deal’... he realises, for the first time, he absolutely can’t throw around words being apologetic. He doesn’t have the means, after all.

Ah... it was that time of year again, wasn’t it? He hadn’t really been able to keep track of the seasons all that much, being so far from home, but he supposed... he’d been here a long time after all. The thought, of course, fills him with nothing but anxiety. There was only one person he wanted to be with, on a day like today – someone he’d wanted to see every day since he arrived, someone he didn’t go an hour without thinking about.

Is she... doing okay? The thought of Ring crying, after all, wondering where he had gone, is nearly unbearable. He and Ring... were a pair. Who else could he wish for, after all?

Ah... Gaster really was an easygoing sort of person, wasn’t he? Rather, he explains himself to easily that Lui can’t help relaxing the tension in his shoulders. Even Ring... couldn’t really do that to him. Was it because he seemed so old? It was kind of hard to tell, when he was a skeleton, but perhaps this was what grandparents acted like.

It wasn’t like he was ever supposed to have ‘family’, wasn’t like his relationship to Ring was anything more than a construction of one for the sake of fans who could more easily connect to human concepts... but it still makes him feel uncontrollable longing.『 it really is crowded, isn’t it?? that’s kinda smart... 』Even though he was meant to be at home in crowds, he couldn’t help feeling overwhelmed.『 do you not like it here, gaster-san?? 』

Cloud nodded as he read the words on the phone screen. He was most certain. “C’mon kid.” He said as he headed over to the bike, readjusting his goggles over his face.

He got on the bike easily enough and patted the seat behind him. “Y’need a help up? Last kid I had on here, I had to pick up and settle on.” Of course, Denzel had been pretty out of it at the time.

『 aa, it’s fine...! i can make it! 』At least, he thinks... though he’s reluctant to try it out without letting out the last words he can. He shuffles, awkward.『 i won’t be able to talk, though, so... uu, thank you. i’ll be going ahead... 』

Waiting for him to read the message, he tucks his phone carefully in his pocket, before approaching the bike. It occurs to him that if he fell off this thing, he could probably be irreparably damaged. That was... what happened to metal, in a collision. Shaking his head a little, he pushes himself up onto the seat, making sure he’s properly settled before putting his arms around the stranger’s waist. If he thought about it, this was really a bizarre situation... but if he would simply shut down otherwise, then he would take it.

Goro smiles as he reads over the message, and then he looks ahead again. “Ah, I wouldn’t say there was enough on my mind to be concerned with.” It was just nice to be outdoors. It always had been. But here it was more peaceful than before. “But it’s nice to meet you Lui-kun.” He adds, turning to look at him directly again - it’s politer that way, of course.

“It’s nice that it’s peaceful here, isn’t it?” It’s a change from what he’s used to, and maybe that’s the more unsettling thing than his home situation or personal feelings - there’s nothing he’s used to to occupy himself with. But talking to people so far has been a pleasant experience - without his previous renown, people are less fake (to put it simply) with him. Plus, it has allowed him to learn a lot. “But I certainly couldn’t ignore your intent pacing - they do say talking about things can ease minds. And I must admit I’m not very busy at all today; it’s almost saddening.”

『 uu, sorry..... i didn’t mean to bother you. 』He’d probably been wasting battery anyway, getting worked up like that. At least Akechi didn’t seem to find it annoying.『 it is nice... i think i could’ve ended up in a worse place. everything is really pretty, and i’ve met a lot of nice people... and i got to bring my things with me... 』

Of course, anything Lui’s imagination could come up with would be worse than what reality could throw at him. Anything was better than the scrap heap. He rubs his fingers against his phone in an anxious motion, before deciding to continue a little.『 it’s just, i wonder how my sister is doing. do you have anyone back home, akechi-san? 』Holding out his phone, he thinks this is at least something humans tended to understand. Lui was supposed to mimic them right down to an emotional level, after all. The anxiety that he felt over being separated from his closest family, his only family... was something universal between them.

Hakuno couldn’t help but smile back when Lui shook his head firmly and gave a soft smile, confirming that he was happy and wanted to come. She didn’t know his experiences before this, but she felt things were turning up for him.

She looked on with interest as she read his message, particularly the part about never having been to a party before and wanting to experience it even if it’s intimidating. “Well, you aren’t alone there, I feel the same way really. I’ve never been to a party either, no time or room for it with the life I led. This is new to me too. I lived with festive people who’d probably enjoy such things though, indeed I came here mainly because a certain friend in particular would probably like this ball a lot.”

As the lights around the dance floor and the main festivities drew closer, Hakuno’s pace slowed to a halt, not wanting to intimidate Lui too quickly by just dragging him right into the thick of it. The music got louder as they approached, it filling her ears…it still wasn’t something she was used to to be honest. “Are you ready?”

『 aa, really.....? 』Perhaps it was strange that he was surprised, but Hakuno seemed so together, so confident, it was difficult for him to imagine her lacking life experiences like he did. Though everyone here came from such different worlds, when he was actually living among them, it was kind of difficult to notice just how different they all were. Everyone... was trying their best, huh? Even Hakuno. Ah... I’m always, always only thinking of myself.

A pang of guilt nestles in his core. Somehow, somehow, he’d like to understand other people’s struggles, beyond his own, small understanding of the world.『 you can’t tell at all, hakuno-san. is your friend here...?? from your world, i mean. 』He can’t help thinking of Ring at her words, wondering if she would have liked it too. Perhaps, however much he wished she were here... for her sake, he had to try his best to enjoy himself?

Phone held out for her to read, her question startles him a little, but is followed by a firm nod, and a tentative smile. He would try his best. This was the kind of thing he was built for... right?

He supposes, after being here for this long, he was somewhat of a city veteran... and, to some extent, it wasn’t too hard to spot the newcomers, whether it was the aura of bewilderment, or the eyeing everything with suspicion. The guy, glaring at the aquarium as if it wasn’t just an attraction, was probably one for sure. It couldn’t hurt, right...?

Tugging lightly on his sleeve to get his attention, he holds up his phone for him to read the message typed there.『 uuu, it is ok to go in!! even though the mascot is a sheep and all...... aa, that’s kind of the case with everything around here, ww....... 』Though, the longer he waits for the stranger to read, the more he can’t help thinking he has a bit of a scary aura. No matter how he tried to just blend in and relax, it seemed like the mere action of trying to look calm made him appear obviously the opposite. After having been here for so long he doubted it was just the setting, he supposed he’d just come to realise he really was... a useless, nervous wreck, by his mere demeanour. Unlocking his phone to apologise and reassure the latest asker, he glances up at her – mouth falling silently open.

Ah... this lady... she definitely couldn’t see, right? Even though running into a blind person was something he’d constantly reassured himself could never actually happen, it was seriously happening right now? No, no, there wasn’t any problem before, but... this was a problem, no matter how he looked at it. Ah, how was he supposed to...

His phone still awkwardly held in his hand, he shakes his head by instinct – before tensing up entirely, his face slowly morphing into panic. If he couldn’t even rely on visuals, when he had no sound, what was he supposed to do? Knees beginning to tremble, he just stands there, trying to think up some possible way out of this, before awkwardly tugging at the girl’s arm, to draw an ‘OK’ on her palm. Hopefully... his hand wasn’t shaking too much.

Honestly, the sheep virus incident had left its toll on Lui. Even if it was gone from his system, the sheer stress he’d gone through had him feeling exhausted, processing everything around him far slower than usual. Was something... still wrong? It wasn’t like he didn’t trust Gaster, and it seemed like the virus had disappeared from all the other city electronics besides him, yet... well, it was just like him to worry for nothing, after all.

It isn’t like he’d usually voice his concerns, but since it’d affected the whole city, he figured it was probably more dangerous not to speak up. Though, now he’s in the police station, he’s absolutely having second thoughts. Ah, you’re, you’re just wasting police time, now, with your useless overthinking! As if he wasn’t already on his way out, as if something that strenuous on his systems wouldn’t permanently alter a unit as worn out as him. But, even so...

Slowly, biting his lip, he types out a message for the officer (at least, he’s guessing that’s what this man is) to read, tentatively holding his phone out for him.『 excuse me....... sorry for, uu, intruding without appointment. i’ll leave right away if i have to make one, aaaa. i was just wondering if i could ask a question about the thing that happened with that virus..... if that’s okay. a, sorry... ..! 』

They could tell Lui was nervous, or something of the sort. Was he nervous about Chara returning to them? Knowing the other, they wouldn’t be back for a while and they’d have to go and find them. Frisk knew how Chara could be and they’d have to go and find them if they wanted to talk or anything of the like.

‘You’re not a bother or anything! Besides, Chara’s probably off on their own and they probably won’t be leaving their spot if I know them.’ They let out a small chuckle at that, the other was just like that. ‘Ah, thank you Lui! A family friend of a friend made it for me, along with what said friend is wearing. I think you look great though! Besides, there are others that came dressed like yourself, so you don’t have anything to worry about!’ They smiled at him, as to reassure him.

Automatically, he begins typing out more lukewarm reassurance – ‘if it’s really okay after all’ and ‘I’ll leave right away when that happens’ – only to realise he’s already said all of that. Self-conscious, despairing at himself, he backspaces, nodding instead. Though...

『 you don’t have to pretend i look good.........! it’s really just my normal clothes, after all.... uuuuuu......... thank you, though. 』Glancing around, he cant help but feel like he still stands out an awful lot. Yet, it was no one’s fault but his own, for fretting about attending or not for so long... though, if he’d decided for sure he’d go, he’d probably just have spent the time fretting about what was right to wear instead. The result, in the end, was probably the same. He smiles a little shyly.『 even so, i think i’d definitely look more plain next to you, wwwwww. it’s strange, isn’t it? i’ve never been to something this fancy before... 』

If Lui said he had any idea where he was going, then he would be lying. Honestly, he couldn’t see a single thing – if you asked him, the sheep that had taken up residence in his visual system personally moved in the most inconvenient places, leaving him with useless fragments that were very little help. Actually, at this point in time, he was very much regretting trying to leave his room in the first place. He’s too disoriented, he feels dizzy, and the direction of the stairs –

There’s a soft thud, followed by regret. Was this... a person? He stumbles hurriedly back, craning up his head to see, squinting uncomfortably. Ah... Gaster-san.

He’s a little relieved – relieved, at least, that it was someone he recognised. Maybe he could help him back upstairs? Though... as he looks back to his phone, he finds himself overcome with hopelessness again. For being this worthless... this is my punishment, isn’t it...? Slowly, he struggles to type through the sheep running across his screen, before holding his phone up with what he hopes is a smile... though, even he knows that’s a bit much to wish for at this point.『 sorrry, gaster san,,,, arw you okayy??? 』
