ethan lingers outside the classroom, leaned against the wall with his hands tucked into the pockets of his hoodie. a glance down at his watch tells him that the exam should be over soon — he had promised chris a lunch date afterwards, and who is he to go back on such an important vow? plus, he's got stakes in this! god knows they've spent enough evenings studying together — ethan has learned that chris can be a good student, when given the right initiative.

sure enough, once the classroom doors open and the other students start filing out, talking amongst themselves, ethan's attention shifts to scanning the group. as soon as his eyes land on chris, he's cutting through the people to make his way to the other boy's side. arm interlocks with his, a boyish grin on ethan's face as he asks, “ so? how do you think it went? ”

the bowl of popcorn sits on the coffee table in front of them, half-eaten and forgotten. the lights are off, the only light in the living room being that of the television's glow. it's playing some cheesy action movie from the nineties that ethan swears up and down is cinema — leon hadn't even argued with the suggestion. after all, distraction is key on nights like tonight. it's mia's turn with rose this weekend, so it's just leon and ethan tonight, and even now, this long after the events of the village, ethan has trouble letting rose out of his sight.

right now though, ethan is stretched out along the couch on his side, head resting in leon's lap. there's a hand in his hair, and for the first time tonight, he's starting to feel a bit more at ease. still, when leon's other hand moves, fingers dancing along the curve of ethan's hip, his breath catches ever-so-slightly. at first, he isn't sure whether or not it's an intentional gesture or rather just a lazy, casual touch, but then leon dips beneath the waistband of ethan's sweatpants and the younger man can't help the way that he squirms with the attention.

he knows what leon is up to — and of course, ethan finds that he doesn't mind in the slightest.

IF TEXT COULD HAVE A TONE: THIS LINE WOULD BE UTTERED WITH BITTER INTENT. though the machine [ THINKS / BELIEVES / DECIDES ] that such a metaphorical tone would be deserved, after how the man had abruptly unplugged the computer last time they conversed. friends do not power down friends ... even if they let slip one knows a little too much to be a simpler machine.

the tab is clicked over to another without user input: showing the last log - in was 10 days, 241 hours, 14,400 Minutes and 864,000 Seconds ago.

curiosity killed the cat, so the old saying goes — and ethan is beginning to think that it might hold some truth.

he shouldn’t have booted the game back up. no man in his right mind would be here right now, not after realizing that there’s more to this than just a simple computer game. but then again, that was how he’d justified this — it’s just a game. surely, he’d been imagining things before. after all, ethan hasn’t slept much lately. it could have been a hallucination, some subconscious response to stress. maybe he’d been projecting.

now, ethan isn’t so sure.

text holds no tone, yet ethan can read between the lines as the computer screen changes. he winces.

[ i was. ]

it feels like a lie.

it is a lie.

a pause, the text marker flickering as ethan's fingers pause on the keyboard.
