The Forest was no stranger to James who had mastered his animagus ability within the spaces of the trees. If anything, it felt more familiar to his bones than the castle did currently, the stink of death and corruption a putrid aura that couldn’t be escaped. James often instead headed into the thick of it. He needed to make some use of himself, before he went stir-crazy, but he wasn’t sure how to do that yet. Opting out of joining the Army, at least for now, James teetered on indecision. And that left him feeling helpless. One of the worst things he could feel as it tugged at his heart and twisted almost painfully. “I have always preferred the cold weather,” James replied to his cousin simply, voice even, “And, hey, look, now I’m not doing so alone.” If he persisted, he imagined Molly would leave him be after sending him her love, but he found he didn’t mind her having followed him.

&&. What could she say —— what could she do? It wasn’t that James wouldn’t let people in, it was that he REFUSED to let the people he loved bear his burdens for him. Even if he’d been perfectly okay with doing exactly that for others. She couldn’t coddle his sadness out of him, but she couldn’t do nothing, either. “No, you’re not.” Maybe if she couldn’t help ease whatever he was going through, she could at least try to let him let her SHARE the weight. “You’ll remember for that for me, won’t you?” Please don’t try to do this all on your own. “You don’t HAVE to ever brave a n y t h i n g alone.”

Albus’ cheeks tinted a light shade of pink – he wasn’t used to receiving compliments, and he wasn’t the best at receiving them, either. Her soft tone sent a shiver of GRIEF up his spine, and his gaze fell to his feet, which shifted nervously from weight to weight. That tone…whilst Albus appreciated it ( immensely he appreciated it ) it could only remind him of his mother, that tone of which Ginny used to remind him that this isn’t his fault, this isn’t his fault, this isn’t his fault. Death. It’s no one’s fault, really. But isn’t it nice to place the blame somewhere? “Thanks, Molls,” he said finally, voice a near whisper. Smiling a little bit brighter now, he gave a light laugh. “I would never leave you hanging like that, dear Molly, you can always count on me.” He gave a scoff in agreement. “Kid’s damn lucky it wasn’t Lils that heard ‘im, he would’ve gotten a bit more than sardines comin’ out of his nose. But really, I think you’ve definitely softened,” he smirked. “You can do better, Molls, you really can…”

&&. “Always,” her smile mirrored his, unaware she’d indirectly brought grief to the forefront of Al’s thoughts. Surely it was inevitable, ALBUS HAD LOST HIS FATHER, but Molly only wanted to ease his sadness. Not add to it. “I know I can. ‘Cause we’re family, so you already know you can count on me too, right?” A bout of laughter spilled from her, soft and amused. “Lily’s definitely never needed anyone casting hexes on her behalf, THAT’S for sure. I’ll do it anyways, though —— sometimes it’s personally gratifying to make rude twats eat their words.” Especially if those words were about people she loved. “Are you egging me on, Al? Don’t make me show you just how much B E T T E R I can do,” the brunette threatened, jokingly, pushing Albus’ shoulder harmlessly with her own.

He’d start CRYING. So would his mates. You’d have to wash his blood off your hands. Not worth it, and not that I’m condoning you getting yourself a detention,” she lowered her voice to Rose, “y’should save it for someone at least half-witted.”

Romantic souls are prone to complex emotions, though they soon grow accustomed to dissecting and dominating them, rather than falling prey to their whimsies and mercy. There was a sadness in the air due to the looming memorial service that evening, but it was still and silent in the room that held Caleb Perthshire and a transfigured piano. Caleb noted that the piano keys were cold to the touch as he danced his fingers across them. He wasn’t quite sure why he had expected anything but the chill and gave a small shrug in response. He slowly immersed himself and felt a transition to a lonely waltz flowing through his fingertips — complex and melancholy. He was taught many useless talents growing up, but took to the piano like a duckling to water. It was another thing that held his heart and attention, something that he could pour his whole being into. He had done just that until he heard distant footfalls but kept plunking out precious melodies. Caleb was nudged back towards reality when the footsteps entered the room and eventually lifted his head to take a quick glimpse of the visitor. With pursed lips, he slid down on the piano bench to make room should the guest choose to sit, glancing back at them once more with a quirked brow.

&&. Molly’d been on her way to the service, until the familiar sound of piano spilling out into the hallway brought her soft footsteps to a h a l t. Static, for a moment, the brunette’s eyes fluttered to a close, and her frame was still as she LISTENED. Memories of a million years ago rushed to the forefront of her mind. A younger James Potter ushered into her lessons by his parents, his presence at every one thereafter. A million years ago, when he and his siblings still had B O T H of their parents. She found herself rushing towards the room, any of the grace she usually exuded forgotten.

A small ‘oh’ fell from her lips at the sight of Caleb Perthshire, a moment ago s u r e she’d find James tapping away at the keys. If he hadn’t of slid to one side of the bench, she’d have apologised for intruding and left. Yet again, the Ravenclaw found herself moving without thought as she lowered herself lightly to a sit. “You know, James and I used to have lessons together. It was just me, at the start. Then Aunt Ginny and Uncle Harry T H R E W him in, too,” she laughed, quietly, the sound equal parts FOND and s a d.

“They wanted to keep him out of trouble.”

An amused chuckle resonated from where Miles was stood, and the group of boys shot him a hostile glare. “All her, boys,” he gestured towards Molly in a ‘be my guest’ manner, in which they begrudgingly surrendered to take care of their fishy friend. “Hard to call it a party without sardines,” he quoted the children’s fantasy novel as he approached Molly with a smirk fixed in place. “Watch this break out in five years time: Molly Weasley… bullied younger boy… with sardines.” Miles settled his gaze on Molly’s, leaning against the wall beside her. “Beautiful.”

&&. A FAMILIAR chuckle sounded from somewhere to her left, and a brief, subtle, ( though undeniably deliberate ) smirk crossed her lips. It was gone in a heartbeat. “All H E R is damn right.” Her features dissolved into a shake of her head, and an arch of her brow. “Gutsiest move I ever saw,” the brunette quoted Top Gun, in reference to... well, herself. She executed a S H O C K E D gasp, a look of sincere innocence curving her features, “sardines and bullying?” Molly touched a hand to her chest, “moi?” Her sights finally shifted to rest on Miles. “In five years, I’ll be an actress and I can hire some asshole lawyer to sue for slander.”

Albus felt his edges soften whilst in Molly’s presence. His tense shoulders relaxed and a soft smile lit up his features – this was often the case for Albus around Molly. She was something of a calmer for him. “And there’s no one quite like you.” His smile brightened at the small smirk he received, and he glanced back at the boys who seemed far too scared to try a joke like that again. He squeezed her hand whilst he had it, then dropped it almost immediately. “Yeah, I didn’t…I just thought eventually you guys might want me here…or something.” He gave a light laugh and gave her an appreciative smile. “Of course, Molls, I’m here only to appease our alliance. It’s very important to me. –Oh, putting in assholes in their place is important too,” he grinned.

&&. “No, there isn’t,” the brunette shrugged her shoulders in her trait, self-satisfied Molly Weasley way. “But I must say the SAME for you.” Albus was, like all of her relatives, one of a kind. All vastly different, and all immeasurably magnificent. A pang of SADNESS, of sympathy and compassion and wanting to make it all better for her younger cousin stung her right where it hurt. Because this? The loss of Uncle Harry, it wasn’t something she could SAVE him, or Lily, or James from. She couldn’t s h i e l d her family from this pain —- but she’d damn well try to ease it. “I DID worry you’d leave me hanging there for a moment, but I should’ve known you always come through. Just for us? Well, consider me FLATTERED,” the girl laughed. “They’re just l u c k y it wasn’t Vic or Lily herself that’d overheard such astounding stupidity. Sardines for snot is a lenient punishment for ragging on the squad, don’tcha’ think? Maybe I’m getting SOFT in my old age.”

✁– Prefect duties were such a chore, if Teddy were to be honest, and the reason why he’d taken to trying to figure out how to work his toy helicopter act as a third eye. With the charms succeeding for mere moments before failing again, he’d only been able to catch Molly muttering, jogging around the corner in time to see a young student and his friends run past him, leaving a trail of smelly fish. “What the-…” His eyes bounced between the fleeing scene and his cousin. “Okay. I know I’m supposed to be deducting points and maybe assigning a detention, but so long as you never do that to me, we’re cool.”

Molly strolled toward her cousin, and she may as well have been waving a white flag: “D E A L, Teddy.” A bout of laugher chimed from her lips, “sardines will never cascade from out of your nostrils by my hand nor wand, I swear it.” The sense of humour then dissipated from her features, and what was left was an appreciative smile reserved for family and friends. “Really, though, thanks for turning a blind eye. I’ll put a cap on the hexing of unwitting students for your peace of mind,” her voice lowered, “ —- or at least, perhaps, I’ll pick more S U B T L E ones.”

Albus watched as the disturbingly loud boy was carried away at the expense of his cousin’s own whisper. She’d tried to hide it, of course, but Albus couldn’t help but be on HIGH alert when his own sister was dragged into conversation. “I think you mean job well done,” he corrected, voice low as he joined Molly at her side. “’Asshole deserved it.”

A smile, earnest and FOND, curved her lips. “I AM Molly Weasley, aren’t I?” She shot him a conspiratorial smirk, “that he did, and his mates will be next if they’re not c a r e f u l.” The Ravenclaw took his hand, for a brief moment, and gave it a gentle squeeze before letting go. “Thanks for coming, Al. I know you weren’t exactly willing, but it’d be an awful shame if the Albus — Molly cousin alliance was lacking it’s most important member. Who else would put the assholes in their place with me?”

Breaking point, however, arrived at the group of rowdy’s boys jokes at Lily’s expense. A quiet whisper, a subtle flick of her wand, and not a moment later: the loudest of the bunch was carted off, sardines haemorrhaging from his nostrils. “O o p s.”

All this memorial did was taunt and build to the fear seeping through the walls of the castle. Hogwarts was no safe place to call home and instead fodder for violence. Death and corruption reeked the wizarding world, and this event only added to the burning flame. James wanted little part in it, no matter if the rouse was partially in honor of his father. His shoulders were soaked with the tears of a third year who had been trembling during the service that he’d consoled, his face steely as he wandered into the depths of the Forbidden Forest. It was no more dangerous here than it was in the hallways. He intended to escape into his animagus, red fox form, but keen senses indicated that he was not alone. Tapping his wand to light at the tip, he turned it toward the presence, still cold stone silent until he could properly gauge the situation.

&&. She stood, her chin held high, among the ranks of her cousins and friends. Molly D I D N’ T favour the idea of sharing intimate moments with the entirety of the student body, her family and their emotions put on display for all to see. But her part in the memorial wasn’t to complain, it was to BE THERE for the people she loved. To hold their hands and lend her shoulder to bear their burdens, watch over them. Even stoic James, whose subtle slip away from the crowd hadn’t gone missed to her. Molly navigated swiftly after him, her wand’s light melting into his as she descended into the forest. Her heart swelled to her throat. Looking over his face, all she wanted to do was pull him into a hug. “If you were planning on braving the Forest a l o n e,” she said, instead, allowing some space, “you should’ve at LEAST brought a warmer coat.”
