Facebook can map more of Earth in a week than we have in history | New Scientist
In a blog post, the social network announced that its AI system took two weeks to build a map that covers 4 per cent of our planet. Thatâs 14 per cent of Earthâs land surface, with 21.6 million square kilometres of photographs taken from space, digested and traced into a digital representation of the roads, buildings and settlements they show. And Facebook says it can do it better and faster, potentially mapping the entire Earth in less than a week.
This is the starkest example Iâve seen so far of the most important phenomenon in technology â computers doing human work really fast. Itâs going to change the way we work forever, and will have massive implications for how we acquire knowledge, cooperate on large projects and even understand the world.
The stated goal of Facebookâs data-science team is to build maps to help the social network plan how to deliver internet to people who are currently offline. Itâs a dubious starting point, but whatever you think about Facebookâs internet colonialism, the companyâs drones wonât be able to beam Wi-Fi to the disconnected until they know where they are.
Still thinking about what happened to me in Chicago Monday night. I was hanging out with a group of friends (hey might as well put it out there I was the only black dude in the group) and we got access to the roof of this high end condominium building in the middle of downtown through a friend to watch the fireworks and as we are walking through the lobby to go on the roof one of the older white guys working the lobby gonna try to stop and single me out saying âare you with them?â You moron, you see me talking to my friends and walking IN THEIR GROUP. Of course I am. I was like âduhâ and kept walking. Stop stereotyping people. The folks you should be peeping you donât. Iâm sick of this profiling.
I couldnât really hold in the frustration so I vented when I was in the elevator with them like âyoooo that just straight up stereotyped meâ and then everyone just kind stared at me and didnât say a word. Extremely frustrating.
No matter how well you dress or present yourself folks still gonna have some type of antiquated racist preconceived notion about you. Respectability politics donât even mean a thang. Iâm so over everything.
Iâm most frustrated no one even spoke up for me. Iâm used to dealing with racist scumbags but thereâs something more infuriating about people being neutral in these ordeals
Iâm so tired of people.
