helen âtrans people are perpetuating gender steriotypesâ joyce is now upset that the scientific american is writing about how women were hunters too back in the day, not just mothers and caretakers. feminist win!
I think I found the article!
The influential idea that in the past men were hunters and women were not isn’t supported by the available evidence
Read it if you have the time, it's very interesting.
Reading the article I see why TERFs are mad about it; it explicitly makes the distinction between gender as a social entity and sex as a biological category, and defines biological sex having multiple factors, both of which are anathema to TERF philosophy.
It also includes these fascinating paragraphs about the role of estrogen in different types of physical activity, directly debunking the widespread notion that estrogen is the weak human's hormone and only does weak human things:
Given the fitness world's persistent touting of the hormone testosterone for athletic success, you'd be forgiven for not knowing that estrogen, which females typically produce more of than males, plays an incredibly important role in athletic performance⊠The estrogen receptorâthe protein that estrogen binds to in order to do its workâis deeply ancient. Joseph Thornton of the University of Chicago and his colleagues have estimated that it is around 1.2 billion to 600 million years oldâroughly twice as old as the testosterone receptor. In addition to helping regulate the reproductive system, estrogen influences fine-motor control and memory, enhances the growth and development of neurons, and helps to prevent hardening of the arteries. Important for the purposes of this discussion, estrogen also improves fat metabolism. During exercise, estrogen seems to encourage the body to use stored fat for energy before stored carbohydrates. Fat contains more calories per gram than carbohydrates do, so it burns more slowly, which can delay fatigue during endurance activity. Not only does estrogen encourage fat burning, but it also promotes greater fat storage within muscles⊠which makes that fat's energy more readily available. Adiponectin, another hormone that is typically present in higher amounts in females than in males, further enhances fat metabolism while sparing carbohydrates for future use, and it protects muscle from breakdown. Anne Friedlander of Stanford University and her colleagues found that females use as much as 70 percent more fat for energy during exercise than males. Estrogen's ability to increase fat metabolism and regulate the body's response to the hormone insulin can help prevent muscle breakdown during intense exercise. Furthermore, estrogen appears to have a stabilizing effect on cell membranes that might otherwise rupture from acute stress brought on by heat and exercise. Ruptured cells release enzymes called creatine kinases, which can damage tissues⊠Linda Lamont of the University of Rhode Island and her colleagues, as well as Michael Riddell of York University in Canada and his colleagues, found that females experienced less muscle breakdown than males after the same bouts of exercise. Tellingly, in a separate study, Mazen J. Hamadeh of York University and his colleagues found that males supplemented with estrogen suffered less muscle breakdown during cycling than those who didn't receive estrogen supplements.
The article also talks about sexual dimorphism in different species, concluding that "Modern humans have low sexual dimorphism compared with the other great apes," and that overemphasis on averages obscures the wide dispersal of individual traits, which is what I keep saying.
Anthropologists also look at damage on our ancestors' skeletons for clues to their behavior. Neandertals are the best-studied extinct members of the human family because we have a rich fossil record of their remains. Neandertal females and males do not differ in their trauma patterns, nor do they exhibit sex differences in pathology from repetitive actions. Their skeletons show the same patterns of wear and tear. This finding suggests that they were doing the same things, from ambush-hunting large game animals to processing hides for leather. Yes, Neandertal women were spearing woolly rhinoceroses, and Neandertal men were making clothing.
I also thought this part was cool :)

we need legislation banning games >100GB
OPTIMIZE YOUR SHIT BETTER THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR A 150GB GAME!!!
upon reviewing the notes I'm changing my position. games must be <50GB. no more mandatory 8k uncompressed textures!!! I don't believe in 8k I think it's fake
to be clear games really ought to be around 20 gigs or less. but I think in the spirit of generosity and mercy we won't criminally prosecute the developers until the file sizes breaks 50
Helldivers 2 heard you and went from 156 to 23
wait is that real
just looked it up. holy fuck. they did it by de-duplicating assets. I'm just. my jaw is on the floor. supposedly duplicating assets helps load times on HDDs but. holy fuck at what cost
it's worse than that: The Helldivers devs were told that duplicating assets would help HDD load times, but then they actually tested it and it had basically zero effect on load times!
So they had more than sextupled the size of their game by following industry standard practice that actually did basically nothing!

OFFICIAL CLASS SYMBOLS!
Taken from the HSOD and Andrews wordsâŠ
âFinally made some canonical class symbols for anyone who considers these useful. In the comic, I only came up with aspect designs, because those were the symbols that appeared on the shirts. Classes were represented by the outfit designs, so they never seemed to need symbols. Still, as people speculated on classpecting and developed the ideas in their fanworks, class symbols started to seem like a missing piece of the lore.
The first image here is a better presentation of the crude-looking class pairing list I posted in an earlier Q&A. Again note that classes appear in the list linked as active/passive pairs, with an odd exception to the pattern, putting both witch/sylph fully on the active side, and maid/heir fully on the passive side.
The next image is a series of simple icons I came up with for each class pair, in this order:
- witch/sylph: witch hat
- prince/bard: scepter
- thief/rogue: dagger
- knight/page: sword
- mage/seer: eye staff
- maid/heir: abstract wavy shape, denoting malleability (it's basically John's hood)
- lord/muse: skull on pikeâ
âBut these icons aren't meant to fully convey the classes alone. Instead they're treated more like "spokes" in radial designs which form a circle, so as to enclose an aspect symbol in the middle. That way the class and aspect can become a fully self-contained symbol.
Here's what they look like in radial form. The active ones are black, the passive ones are white. Also, the more active of the pair uses positive space to display the icons pointing outward. The more passive of the pair uses negative space, showing the icons pointing inward, cutting the shapes into the solid circle.
Note that because the list has the two odd pairs, witch/sylph and maid/heir, it was necessary to have both an outward/inward-pointing logic, and a black/white logic. Both witch/sylph are black, and both maid/heir are white, yet both also have inward/outward-pointing icon pairs.â
âTo show examples of what they look like when you combine them with aspects, here are the classpect combos for all major Homestuck characters.â

The Entirety of Tumblr from Tumblr has been Chucked in to the ocean! You're all wet now.
the thing about the concept of gendered socialization is that so many people use it as like another kind of gender essentialism. you know it's not an immutable trait right. you can literally overcome it.
"i'm like this because women are socialized to be shy and quiet and subservient" okay good on you for recognizing it, but that's only the very first step. the next few steps are that you Stop Doing It. feminist thought vs feminist action.
and when ppl see a trans woman being confident and unafraid to take up space and decide it's because of her evil evil male socialization, i'm always like "wait you're saying this woman was raised as a child to be loud and confident and take up space? that's awesome, i thought that's how we WANTED people to raise girls? why exactly is it a problem now? đ€"
like WHY are you telling trans women that they literally have to make themselves smaller and conform to the WORST gender exceptations of women to be seen as real women. since when is it evil and masculine to be confident, i thought we were supposed to be doing that. i thought that was feminism.
They also treat socialisation as some indelible artefact of the past, not an ongoing process. Women aren't just more shy and cautious on average because they were taught that as small children; they're like that because of the environment they're still in at forty or fifty. It's not some irremovable childhood brainwashing, it's a reasonable reaction to current circumstances. A great many trans women become more shy and quieter after coming out or transitioning because the people around them socially punish them for not doing so, same as previously shy and quiet cis women become more confident and take up more space when put in environments that don't punish them for it. They act like someone's personality and behaviour are branded into them based on whether they have a penis at eight years old, but that is simply not the case.
Whenever I see people who are like "trans women are all loud and aggressive and uncouth (/negative)" I automatically think "do you think black women are all loud and aggressive and uncouth (/negative) too? Because that's what you sound like. You sound like someone who met two or three women from an oppressed minority that were more confident than you wanted them to be, and decided that the whole demographic was beneath you in a different way for daring to not stay in their place."
I have been seeing your posts all over the internet for a while now. I recently made an account here on Tumblr and thought I would come say hi. You seem like a really nice person and it makes me happy as a teenager to know that not all adults are sad and have given away their lives to having kids. I worry a lot about ending up like my mom. She loves me but seems so... un-personlike or something?? I'm not really sure how to put it, but it seems like both my parents gave away pursuing their own interests and years of their lives just to have the tittle of a parent. But I don't really want that, so seeing you talk is really cool. It's nice to know that even if it seems like every adult is telling me, "Well, yes, but you could still change your mind about kids later" there is still one adult out there who knows that's not all I could be. I will still get to be so much of someone without kids or a wife or anyone but my friends. I still get to grow up and stay queer and have a cat like you if I want, and I'm allowed to let that be all I ever want. I hope we both get all that we ever want someday, even if it is the tiniest thing in the world to someone else. I hope you are happy forever and that we do not have to die for our queerness.
Thank you for talking about everything and anything, Mr. T. You made me happy tonight and for that, I wish you well on the journey of life! âĄ

Oh my god
Okay full disclosure when I started this blog I had no idea anything I ever said or did would have any impact on anyone ever, but now every so often I get to hear about someone who feels the way I felt and feels seen or someone tells me I helped them in some way and it makes me feel this wonderful warm light in my chest and so I really, really wanna say thank you back???
And hell yes, you're right, you can do whatever you want with your life! It's YOUR life!!! Everyone always told ME "ohhh, you'll want to start dating eventually" or "your feelings will change later" or "it'll be different when you're older" and you know what??? It ISN'T
Getting older and becoming an adult..... some things slow down a bit, but you don't stop being YOU! You learn to appreciate stuff like good quality baking pans and good-smelling dish soap and getting your tax return back on time, but you'll STILL love dinosaurs and action movies and swimming and making paintings!! That doesn't dissolve into thin air!!
Life has been complicated, and not always happy, but I can tell you right now that the number one difference I've found between being an adult and being a kid is that now that I'm an adult, *I* make up the rules! And after I do all the responsible stuff that keeps me alive and healthy I can spend all day in my pajamas pants eating jellybeans, hot-gluing together a cardboard fort in my living room for my beautiful cat son!
IMO, the only REAL 'losing' in life is the time you waste trying to fit into a mold that doesn't make you happy Just to kep up the appearances of being "normal and successful".
Which means if you're already aiming for "happy", you're ahead of the curve!
You've fucking got this!!!!
