Men in Black (1997) dir. Barry Sonnenfeld
I use this scene to explain implicit bias to people. his first instinct is to assume the aliens are violent and the girl is innocent, but instead of acting on those assumptions he takes time to recognize his bias, look at the situation again, and then act.
im in southern california and whenever i talk about the protests (specifically undercover cops and cops looting and blaming it on protestors) on gmail, twitter, or tumblr, my connection to said sites goes down for like fifteen minutes. this also happens to my dad on facebook. we live really close to one of the protests.
discord still works, google still works, airdrop still works, things still work aside from those sites.
to those of you also around here where theyre Doing This, just a heads-up: youre not imagining it. without net neutrality, this is what they do. they sabotage your voice.

Didn’t Guinan do this on Next Gen?
Closing your eyes isn't going to change anything. Nothing's going to disappear just because you can't see what's going on. In fact, things will even be worse the next time you open your eyes. That's the kind of world we live in. Keep your eyes wide open. Only a coward closes his eyes. Closing your eyes and plugging up your ears won't make time stand still.
— Haruki Murakami, Kafka on the Shore
"Canada has problems, but at least we aren't America"
No. Shut up. We cannot ignore our own institutionalized racism just because it is not as bad as America. Or our healthcare. Or our social services. All of it is broken and a problem and saying that we do not need to fix it because we are already better than America is foolish and dangerous. We should not aim to be better than America we should aim to be better than ourselves.
Canada:
-still sterilizes native woman without consent, this is a form of genocide.
-contributes indirectly to the global co2 levels with our oil industry.
-has troop in the middle east participating in the bombing of innocent civilians, creating the refugees we then complain about, all while giving the extremists more ammunition.
-support Saudi Arabia while they are trying to genocide Yemen
-does a very poor job of taking care of war veterans.
Canada is not innocent. We are just as filthy and terrible as America. We are just better at hiding it.
@allthecanadianpolitics do I have correct information?
Know your rights.
While people are inclined to whip out their phones and film when they see something alarming happening, those videos are not always recorded in a way that can be used as evidence in a legal proceeding or to support advocacy tactics.
At the human rights organization WITNESS, where I work as the senior U.S. program coordinator, we’ve learned that video has a greater chance of making an impact when it’s filmed ethically and strategically, and released in coordination with advocacy and legal efforts. Using the camera in your pocket can be a valuable way to ensure the world bears witness to abusive policing and systemic racism, help hold authorities accountable, and advocate for the real safety of our communities.
Teen Vogue still hitting it out of the park, I see.
HOLY SHIT. This was extremely informative. Please everyone READ THIS!!!
To be honest, I was in this type of relationship for three years. It was hell. He had no clue how to do laundry, cooking anything beyond BBQ or pasta was beyond his skill set, and vacuuming once a week - why would you do that, it isn’t dirty. He would take the sheets off the bed, but the bed fairy was supposed to put them back on. I guess the bed fairy was the same fairy who transported dirty dishes to the sink, washed and dried and put them away too. OMG, my work load dropped by 40% when I got out. I only had to clean up after myself.
Good for her for escaping legalized slavery. Or domestic slavery. Whatever you want to call it. Cause if he’s not willing to do his share now, what happens when kids come. You can bet her career will take a back seat to his. And when they are middle aged, she’s worn down by his demands, he’ll pack up and get a newer, fresher model. Who won’t mind him getting a maid, because he’s her sugar daddy.

The Big Bang Theory and Hellblade.
Subnautica and the tv series Snowpiercers. Well, at least they’re both about water. Albeit different temperatures.
Big math news! It’s been thirty years since mathematicians last found a convex pentagon that could “tile the plane.” The latest discovery (by Jennifer McLoud-Mann, Casey Mann, and David Von Derau) was published earlier this month. Full story.
This is really fun to watch

hey! do you have any sources for the black-owned business being damaged that you mentioned?? i would really like to spread awareness about them and donate to help them out if possible!
ofc! not all of these are black owned, but all are poc and small local businesses.
scores sports bar, owned by black firefighter kb balla, was burned down. his wife is a member of the sounds of blackness singing group. they have four children. you can donate here.
ghandi mahal burned down as well. owner ruhel islam’s statement was, “let my building burn. justice needs to be served, put those officers in jail.” however he is still left with immense financial burdens. you can donate here.
holy trinity lutherin church opened their doors to act as medics for protestors, most of whom came in for tear gas related injuries. you can donate here.
jose tamay’s local and immigrant owned business was destroyed, just weeks after being destroyed again in an incident unrelated to the riots. you can donate here.
e&l supermarket and deli, owned by adil albosaad, was damaged and looted. you can donate here.
midori’s floating world cafe is a japanese owned resturaunt which was destroyed. they also appreciate what the riots are representing, but again, are faced with financial and timely damages to rectify. you can donate here.
and i’m sure there are much more, but those are some i found really quickly!! i will be donating to all of them within this next week.
To add one to the list, SacDelux is a black and female owned consignment shop. It was broken into, damaged in the process, and stolen from. Credits go to this post and they have the Go Fund Me link on their post.
@pajamasecrets here’s a list! not all of these are black-owned but all are poc and small local businesses
I can’t breathe
Best wishes to these people obviously but I’m WHEEZING at the concept of a standard horror plot starter but the stranded travelers are an entire fully equipped orchestra.
How about the movie has a full on orchestral soundtrack but as cast members die it becomes increasingly sparse
searching for that fine line between “i need to stay informed” and “i can’t take any more of this.”
