We all know the European (and Chinese) folklore tradition of vampires having to count spilled rice, but what if it’s not the same as vampires physically being unable to enter houses uninvited (ik this is not a thing in iwtv), it’s just a thing they have come to do over the years. Kind of like an compulsion, it’s not in their nature but every European (and Chinese) vampire knows to do it, not doing it is unheard of.

Lestat is known to not be the most reliable teacher of vampire things and Louis, born in America has never even heard of the rice counting thing until one night they’re strolling the streets in the middle of an argument when an old lady drops a bag of rice and it spills on the ground.

Lestat curses and drops onto his knees starting to count and Louis just keeps walking because whu wouldn’t he? Until Lestat yells at him ”13… Louis what the fuck are you doing? 14… 15… Come back here!” Louis turns back around not expecting Lestat to be on his knees on the ground helping a human, that’s beneath him. He’s just picking up grains of rice muttering numbers under his breath ”28… 29... Louis you need to count the rice! 30... 31...”

Louis just shrugs and walks home and Lestat can’t follow him. When it’s getting closer to sunrise and Lestat is still not back Louis goes to get him, and arrives just as Lestat is finishing counting the rice. ”Are you done with your dramatics now?” And Lestat, for once, looks at him like Louis has some power he is jealous of.
