MindMap done! Hope they notice the maze
Culture shower Day 5!
Day 5 of the culture shower started off with me picking up our 3D printed table. On arrival at the 3D lab, I could already see the magnificent table standing there. From there I went to meet up with the rest of my team. I felt excited to be putting up our project at the pop-up museum. On arrival, I showed the team our maze and table which they were very pleased to see.
We went on and set up our work in the big hall with all the different ideas from other students. It was a very enjoyable experience to see all the different pieces, and be able to interact with them and get an explanation about their project. I enjoyed explaining our idea and listening to thoughts about our idea. We ended up naming our project “The Engineers of the Round Table”
So basically, when making this we had two topics that we had to relate to industrial engineering. The Environment and mindfulness, we did this using our project how you ask? Well firstly we related it to two environments! One is a work environment and the other the natural environment. We did this by using a group of people working on one problem the maze! Giving us the work environment aspect, for natural we used different material for each person. Representing not only the environment but also different cultures and mindsets.
How is this all related to mindfulness? If you take a close look you will see that one of the borders is left open. This represents structure being present but also allowing external information and emotions to be reached and considered. This is how we connected our topics to our project.
Now this all is connected industrial engineering how you say? The maze on the table plus the different gestures and positions of the people. Gives us a group of individuals working together by looking at the same problem from different perspectives to reach the same goal. Allowing us to understand Industrial Engineering.
The feedback we received was immense and very positive making us all proud of the amount of work we put in to make it happen.
After the Pop-up museum ended we had a class in which we received our MindMap paper and our Class placements. During this class, however, we got asked some very interesting questions. 3 words that represent my experience was one of them. To me, it was “excitement, teamwork, and responsibility” because they best represent the emotions I felt and what I enjoyed this week.
Another question asked was, 10 years from now what would you tell the people in your position at the moment? To me, I answered this question by thinking, what would I have liked to hear right now from an Industrial Engineer. Which would be the Journey from Student to Professional, knowing that I chose the right degree.
Finally, we got asked what we enjoyed the least and what we enjoyed the most? This made me realize I had enjoyed everything so far with my favorite part being the development of our project and the team. Confirming to me yet again that I chose the right study and will be enjoying the days to come.
Culture shower Day 4!
Day 4 started at 10:45 at which we had an informational class. We got shown some videos about previous students and how IE&M was for them. This gave a nice perspective into what was coming ahead, giving me another reason to work hard.
The class mainly contained the students getting to ask questions, to which we all received answers. Showing the care and encouragement to ask questions. Questions ranging from where to get books and exam resits were asked and answered. Showing me that the course was well structured and I had nothing to worry about. We also received a list of classes for this semester. This was great as I liked all the classes listed on it which just motivated me more.
The next class was Maths, but instead of starting right away we got tested to see how much we remember. The answer sheet was handed to everyone on completion of the test allowing personal marking. To me, this showed true care as for those who felt they scored to low, an extra class was offered that you could take at your own choice. I scored an 8/10 which is good however I myself will probably attend these extra classes for the extra practice.
After finishing the test and grading it we were allowed to leave. Classes had ended for the day so my team and I decided to finalize our project. The team worked very well together and we managed to finalize our work at a nice pace. All that was left was making the maze, and table which was being 3D printed.
When home I started work on my maze! Which didn't take to long I was prepared with all the necessary items. I started off by drawing a maze to which I then built the wooden maze itself. The rest was a lot of patience and glue!!
Culture shower Day 3!
Day 3 of the culture shower! Today we were back at the park theatre which I think is a fantastic building. The day started at 9:45 meaning I had a bit of time to get some of the materials for our project before going to the theatre. Once I arrived at the theatre a great day was waiting for me. It was basically a whole day of talking to Professionals about Industrial Engineering, might sound dull but I had a great experience and loved the things it confirmed to me about my feelings toward the study. Today showed me that I truly want to become an Industrial Engineer which makes me very excited for the upcoming days.
The day started with a Key Note type interview, where we watched the professional get interviewed to whom we could then ask questions afterward. This was done to prepare us for the interviews we were about to conduct. Which was a major help because it thought me not to ask yes or no questions and use open questions instead. They then gave us time to come up with some questions to then use for our own interviews. Each group had to do 6 interviews which let us get into contact with lots of different professionals.
Each of these Professionals thought me a bit, going from structure all the way to kindness. The thing that really showed was that no matter what company the person worked at when asked about Mindfulness and the Environment would give similar answers. Making the task of connecting them to Industrial engineering much easier and transparent. I am grateful that these people took time from their schedules to come and talk to us. A lot of things they said has stuck with me and will help me develop into the Engineer I aspire to be.
Some of the things that stuck with me:
1+1=3 (meaning two people working together makes them 3 times better)
Fail fast, learn fast and move forward.
The way you're fired and hired tells you a lot about the company.
Efficient communication is when both parties have almost a 100% clarity.
Always ask Why not only once but four times if necessary, why why why
Always being able to adapt to change!
making sure everyone sees the same Dog.
Culture shower Day 2!
Day two started at 8:45! at the new Fontys building “de rondom” or so we thought.... it turned out that our class was moved to 10:45, now this was not my first time having a class moved or canceled. I do wish I could have slept more, but that was okay because it meant I had two hours to fill. Which was not difficult at all given all the students were present, meaning the team was present as well. We decided to do some work on our Modern art project.
We then started on finding an idea that would connect IEM with Environment and Mindfulness, which went on very smoothly we had all researched some ideas up the previous night. The first thing we had to do once we chose the idea, was finding the meaning of both environment and mindfulness and if we should only look at the environment or a working environment. Maybe even both, we even looked at environmental environment. Now mindfulness is one deep subject, it has to do with taking in all the information around you being emotion and your consideration of others at the same time.
We worked for about an hour and a half and took a break until class. During our break, we got visited by Mr.Latif who talked to us about the course and answered any questions we had. I appreciated that as he did not have to even come talk to us, however he decided to check up on us and our experience. which made us feel welcome and looked after. Then we went to class where there was a lot of questions between the students and teachers. where some people felt cheated by the class move, which I completely understood given the new building.
The class itself was very clear and to the point, we discussed Tumblr, mind maps and the different layers and how helpful a mind map can be to organize yourself. I felt confident about doing the work necessary to accomplish making my mindmap, as well as looking at group dynamics and how they changed. At the end of class, we were told to prepare for tomorrow’s interviews.
The next class stuck with me the most as we were told a bit about Management & Organization, giving us a sneak peek at Industrial Engineering. We discussed Organization and what organization is. The class had some guest speakers that each talked about a different topic. Economics, Logistics, and Technology which I all thoroughly enjoyed and am excited to learn more about!!
Culture shower Day 1!
Day 1 of the Culture shower yaaayy.... back with this life again. Uni has begun and I am actually quite excited and ready to set my PlayStation controller down and pick my notebook up (except during the weekends, because relaxation time is important).
I started my day by having myself a nice cup of tea with lots of milk, a slice of cake, and went on my way. Day 1 started at the park theatre, which was easy to find! Although I took the wrong entrance and had to ask for directions, I made it inside through the main gate. Once inside I was guided in the direction of the international section, where some students were already seated. I expected myself to be a bit nervous, however, that was not the case. I think it’s because I feel confident and have started reorganizing my life.
Our agenda for the day was looking at Industrial Engineering & Management, where we got asked the fitting question: What is Industrial Engineering & Management? This usually makes me think about factories for some reason, however, the question itself forces me to really think about it from a different perspective. More on that question in the following days!
One thing that really stuck with me is this thing that was said about the word Crisis in Chinese. where it can translate to Danger and Opportunity, which I thought was amazing! cheesy but amazing. It confirmed to me that I need to look at obstacles from different perspectives. I also learned about MOTE, which is the base of IEM where each letter means: Manpower, Organization, Technology, and Economy.
We were then put in teams, and IEM sub-categories were assigned to each team. Our team received Environment and Mindfulness as our category, we then got to watch a movie in which we had to focus on how IEM was related to things happening in The Martian.
After the movie, we got introduced to our tutor, whom we met afterward for a brief introduction after which we got to go home!!
I wonder how long we will need to do this Blog thing for...
