Demanding from people that they post something on whatever (foreign) political matter and judging their morality by that is the dumbest thing ever. They don’t have to post shit. What someone chooses their social media to look like (for example if they want to share pics of some lighthearted fun moments in life) says nothing about what that person thinks about every single issue in the world. Frankly celebs posting about these things half of the time seem to do it because they are “supposed to”
This is not just a political matter. In fact, it is anything but just a political matter. It's a matter of racial discrimination at its peak. It's a matter of police brutality and failure of the judicial system to hold the police accountable. It's reflective of the very brutal dehumanization of black people that has continued for centuries and managed to stay afloat in fucking 2020.
No matter what we say, celebrities are people with the greatest influence in the world. People respect them and value what they say and do to no fucking ends (bollywood celebrities are a huge example of that). The number of followers some of them have is insane. Cristiano Ronaldo has 220 million followers on instagram. People from all over the world. He gets an average of 10 million likes on a single post. Imagine ten million people seeing a single link that helps the george floyd case. Or just getting to know what's happening. It does make a difference. What these celebrities post matters. They are one of the opinion makers of the society. What they say is going to be pondered over by people. Out of love, respect, admiration. Even obsession. But it's 100% going to be heard. Going to be adopted by many.
This does put some level of responsibility on their shoulders. Specially the ones with such a huge following. And at least I do expect them to speak up. Because they are damn well 'supposed to'. Just like you and me. All of us. This just requires basic human empathy. This issue is so much bigger than what their social media looks like. A single post advocating the rights of a highly marginalised community won't ruin their aesthetic. No one is demanding them to convert their entire account into some campaign. We are just asking for a single post. That, too, because they have an enormous following and impact.
But at the same time I know many of them make so much effort on their own, outside of social media, using their money and resources, so I'm genuinely not going to sit here and whine about them not posting and outright assume their stance on the situation, put nasty labels on them but rather focus on the ones making posts and raising awareness. It's such a big fucking issue and we have zero time to dedicate to deciding the morals of some celebrity who did not make a post on their social media.
