I just made an enormous post on reddit about a situation I'm in and welp, let's bring my personal issues to tumblr too. Here we go:

I'm from an area in Western-Europe that is known for being very conservative in matters of religion. One part of my family is from the Christian branch that is also known as Mennonites, while the other part of my family is Dutch reformed but doesn't do sh** with it. This background has as a result that my parents for instance are not known with modern dating situations. In their brain, the moment you are in a relationship you are marriage material and your partner should be spoken to as such, and that's it. My parents got married when they were 20 and 21. Personally, I don't believe in marriage. Having a life partner is nice, but the weddingbells of it all is a big no for me.

For reference, I have never liked relationships. The "thrill" of dating and scoring a guy never interested me, not through my high school life and not through my first years in college. I had always been taught (and this is how a lot of people in my direct environment behaved) that the moment you're dating a boy, you should be with him 24/7, as that is how it is done. I never wanted that life as I valued my independence way too much, so I walked with a big circle around it all. The moment I went to university my understanding of the world became waaaay better, but as I was too busy living life on my own, dating kind of never happend and still did not interest me. Also an important fact: both sides of my family seemed to put a certain value on having a partner. My mennonite family didn't understand what I did in college (I used to be a history major, and when I explained what I did it got often followed with a "so what can you do with it again?) and often went on to the next part: So, do you have a boyfriend already? My other side of the family wasn't much better. They did understand my uni/college life, but I still got a 'so, when are you finally having a boyfriend?" What got followed by "A girlfriend perhaps?" to eventually skipping said question all along, to only ask me about my studies. The most intense question I got after all that was "since when are you such a workaholic?"

But welp, as life sometimes goes, I met a guy in my 3rd year of college and we started dating. The moment I told my mom about it, she seriously misbehaved. Her first response? "Congratulations", which weirded me out because she made me feel as if I had gotten a diploma for something. Said congratulations got followed by a "Now the world won't at least think anymore that you're a lesbian", and a "now I can tell your aunt that you at least have a boyfriend while her daughter doesn't". These comments seriously pissed me off, to which she only replied "but I"m meaning it well."

From that moment on, my mom seriously misbehaved. She kept insisting that she wanted to exchange the single bed I had at home for a double, and kept talking about my boyfriend. When I changed the subject to something else, my friends or school, she switched it back to my boyfriend and that I had to "absolutely tell him that she said hi". When I was on her birthday party, I had multiple people tell me that it was strange that my boyfriend wasn't there with me because "he should be there to keep me in check". To make a long story short, I broke it off a few months later because I was seriously unhappy (other reasons then mentioned above played along in that decision), to which my mom's initial response was "but you can't dump him."

Now, on to the matter at hand: since a few months, I have a new partner, someone I am for once very much in love with. In my relationship with him I feel like I can be truly myself, without being attached to the hip because society expects us to be. The main issue at hand: for as far as my family knows, I'm still very single. I haven't even told them that I"m dating or was busy seeing someone. The reason why I haven't told them is because I would tell it to them out of obligation, not because I want to. Only, a problem has come up. In 1,5 months or so, I have my graduation ceremony coming up from my post masters degree. I really want my boyfriend to be there as I believe such moments should be cherished by the people you love. But, my boyfriend being present at my graduation would mean that he would need to be present together with my parents. Having them discover at my graduation that I'm seeing someone is an absolute no go, so I know that I would need to tell them about this prior to it all, but I absolutely don't know how to resolve this. Also, not unimportant: I'm absolutely not worried about my dad handling all of this. My mom is the real issue. What is also worrying me is that my cousins on my mom her side of the family are very busy with getting babies at this very moment and my mom knows that I want to be childfree, but I worry that the moment I tell her about my relationship, she might, next to all of the above, go full "GRANDMA POSSIBILITIEEEEES" and it will be the only thing in her mind.

So... Any advice for me on how I can fix this situation?

I wasn't planning to watch anyway, but I was hoping that killing Bobby would lead to something solid writing wise, but nope Athena in space is the last thing I want to watch. Minear had a WHOLE summer to think of something, and that's the best he can do. PK, AB, and the entire fandom deserves better. Thoughts?

My apologies for being late to the party. When you send me your message, I was on vacation in Spain. Grab the popcorn, because boy, I have my opinion ready again! They killed him off for realism AND MEANWHILE SEND ATHENA TO FRIGGIN SPACE??? Anon, I assume that I don't have to tell you my issue with that. The only reason that I have watched thursday's episode, is because a dear tiktok user posted the entire thing and I simply refuse to give Minnear my view. I will not spoil the episode for you, but I do strongly believe that they are setting up for Bobby's return. As a matter of fact, I am stronger alive maxxing then ever! The first episode was very strong in setting a scene of "this is how they moved on without him, and it's not pretty". They have found a new form of normal, but absolutely no one is comfortable with that kind of normal. There is especially a particular scene (woops, spoiler) that shows the Grant-Nash family is a mess. It's a total vibe that says "Okay, we have showed them all, let's now re enter Bobby into the mix." The current set up has me intrigued for a few things: - If Bobby returns (I'm keeping my options open), how messed up will he be. - How messed up will Athena be. I am pretty sure that when he returns, there will be nothing left of strong/independent Athena. - The Grant-Nash kids reunion with their stepdad. Also (woops, another spoiler alert): HARRY AND MAY HANG ON A REGULAR BASE WITH BUCK TO WATCH THE BACHELOR????? Long story short: Minnear doesn't have a brain and needs to give us our dad back already. Although, with how ep 1 looked like, I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out they blew this all out of proportion for no reason, as he just needed a longer vacation...
