BOOK OF THE DAY:
A Heartbreaking Work of a Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers
“ Exhilarating…. Profoundly moving, occasionally angry and often hilarious…. A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius is finally, a finite book of jest, which is why it succeeds so brilliantly.” —The New York Times Book Review
At the age of 22 as a college senior, Dave looses both his parents to cancer in a span of five months. He simultaneously becomes an orphan and a single mother, when he becomes the unofficial guardian of his 8-year-old brother, Christopher. As Dave’s life transforms, he begins to worry about child-welfare authorities, untrustworthy babysitters, dinner on the table and his health. He tackles the world of adulthood, while simultaneously publishing a humor magazine with his friends and being part of Generation X.
Wildly clever, borderline annoying, Egger’s the type of snarky, superbly clever friend, who knows he is extremely intelligent that you secretly admire and hate in college. So, if you like this type of archetype and humor, pick up Egger’s memoir. You will leave feeling you know Eggers or imagine if we were to write a memoir, it would sound a lot like this. Egger is brutally honest about his insecurities; his internal dialogue is authentic and raw. It is sad. It is interesting. It is refreshing and oddly familiar. Plus this a great dose of the 90s, for anyone who wishes to reminisce.

I want to save everything and preserve all this but also want it all gone–can’t decide what’s more romantic, preservation or decay.

I don’t hold on to anything anymore. Pain comes at me and I take it, chew it for a few minutes, and spit it back out. It’s just not my thing anymore.
