Tomorrow was Tral’s day off from work. This meant that he was available at anytime, however the Golden Ward branch of the library closed at 7PM. Going at night, assuming night started at 5 or 6 o’clock, wouldn’t give them much time to research. 2 o’clock seemed to be the best bet as far as Tral was concerned. The morning would have been even better but Jack probably had plans already.

“I understand,” the black mage said. “As exciting this all is, it’s important to keep our previous appointments. 2 o’clock works for me. That would give us five hours before the library closed. That should be enough time to get a good start on this project.”

“Right!” Jack said with a nod and threw out a thumbs up. “It’d be perfect!” He said with a grin, then went to activate his Heli-Bot. Once it was fully activated, the propellers motioned and Jack moved upwards. “I’ll catch you later then!”

“Yeah, yeah I’m totally not busy! I have lots of free time so I can totally hang out with you!” Jack beamed excitedly, maybe it was a little sad he did have too much free time… But then again it was enough time to bond with a super cool mage so it wasn’t a problem to him! Well, right now anyways… “I can with ease - after all I am an evil boy genius!” He said, emphasizing the ‘boy genius’ part with an enormous amount of pride.

Tral wondered if he should give advice to the boy about claiming to be evil. He knew kids these days went out of their way to be alternative with their ripped jeans and black makeup, but calling one’s self evil seemed excessive and a little tacky. Calling one’s self a genius was just plain hubris and, while it wasn’t distasteful to him, others found it to be off putting. He sighed. No, he didn’t want to start a pointless argument. He’d just overlook the comment for now.

“Now that that’s settled what time would work for you to meet at the library tomorrow?”

“Oh! Maybe 2 or 3 in the afternoon? Mornings don’t do too well for me! If you’re too busy with the afternoon we can always go to the library during the night!”

Tral was impressed with Jack’s enthusiasm. He also realized that this person also was correct. Jack appeared to have specialized knowledge in these Wu and sometimes what was written in a book was misinformed garbage or even deliberate misdirection. Both were unforgivable and the authors of such books deserved to be tarred, feathered, and hung by their toes.

“If you’re not busy then of course I would want you to join me,” Tral said to his new partner. That was, after all, what they had now become in their quest to find out more about the Shen-Gong-Wu. “Your first hand experience with these Wu would be a boon to any study on them. Since I may not be able to check the credentials of any author that may be found then it would be up to you to verify their accounts.”

Jack knew more about these Wu, as he’d referred to them, than Tral did. He was right that it’d be important to make sure the original Wu was unharmed. A relic like that deserved to be properly preserved and cherished. The problem was, as Jack had inferred, Tral just didn’t know enough about Wu to safely handle them. 

The obvious solution would be to study up on them before attempting his own experimentation, but it had also been implied that not much was really known about them except the creator and this creator, for all Tral knew, could have taken his knowledge to the grave. A sin of the highest order as far as he was concerned. 

“I wouldn’t want any of these Wu harmed. I promise that I wouldn’t experiment on any relic without first knowing the relic would be undamaged. What I’ll do is head to the library first thing tomorrow and see if I can find any books relating to Wu or this creator Dashi-hi. Learning from other’s past mistakes and successes is invaluable.”

“Sounds good!” He said with a grin throwing a thumbs up, as he did he realized... Did he truly know if there was any books on Shen-Gong-Wu in the library? He’s never checked, but now he’s tempted to try. He could only hope if there were books out there, they had accurate information in them. If not? He’ll write some himself! He wasn’t a writer or even a poet, despite sharing the same name with one. But informative works can be done with ease - especially about some wu! It could boost his fame on Radiale too - two birds and one stone, right? Well, before he gets carried away, maybe he should ask if he could join other on his conquest for knowledge.

“Want me to come with? I wanna make sure these books are written accurately, after all!”

This was fascinating. Tral would love to gain a hold of one of these Shen-Gong-Wu just to study its nature. He thought back to his world of similar items. There was the Floater which helped raise the airship from the desert or the Rod which opened the seal to the earth fiend’s lair. He wondered if there was something fundamentally different between these key items from his world and these Shen-Gong-Wu.

“They sound like highly valuable and useful objects, and I, for one, would not turn down an opportunity to see one up close,” the black mage said to his new friend. “Wouldn’t it be amazing if one were able to duplicated one of these objects? Every city guard could chase down suspects by turning into more agile monkeys or, I was reading about these people called psychiatrist, who could see their patients fears and help work their way through them. Imagine the benefits to society.” 

“They really are!” With a grin, he gave an promise to the other. “How about if I find one out here I’ll show it to you, my treat!” While duplicating Shen-Gong-Wu seemed like a good idea, Jack seemed a little conflicted about the idea. Mainly because duplication of any kind reminded him of that Wu that was able to split people apart and weaken them in the process. Would it be the same if Wu was duplicated? Possibly... But did Jack truly know for sure? Maybe if there was a ever a chance he’d try to take it, just for the heck of it.

“I think it’d sound awesome!” With a pause, Jack exclaimed exactly what he was thinking. “But I dunno if it’d be the best idea see, there’s a Wu that can split you into nine different people and it tends to have the worse effects! What if something like that happens with the wu too?”

Tral was even more convinced that Jack was not an evil person. What kind of evil mastermind showed such compassion to a man he had hardly known. And more importantly what was this Shen-Gong-Wu. At his first opportunity he would take it upon himself to research this foreign…whatever it was. He didn’t what too many details from Jack because the black mage didn’t trust information form people who were not experts, but a general idea of what it was wouldn’t hurt.

“I’m not familiar with this Shen-Gong-Wu myself,” Tral said the young man with goggles. He actually liked his eye ware. It gave a distinct flare to him and were functional eye protection. “If you wouldn’t mind explaining what it is I would appreciate it.”   

Yeah, I was kinda thinking you wouldn’t know, these things are a top secret even at my place. I just know about them ‘cause my dad gave me this puzzle box from his Hong Kong trip and some witch was in it...” Oh, he was starting to ramble again! Bad habit of his! “-But that’ll be a story I tell you another time! You wanna know what these things are, right?” He quietly thought of everything he knew about Shen-Gong-Wu from collecting them over the years, then he went to explain to the other about them.  “Okay so, these magical objects were made by some really weird dude called Dashi- he was some sort of Xiaolin Grandmaster! They come in a lot of shapes, sizes, and looks! Some of them are really weird looking and some look just like animals! They have a lot of functions, my favorite one let’s me turn into a monkey! One other really cool one lets you see other’s fears! There’s also a few that can make some sorta demon warrior, he’s kinda creepy! He’s only shown up a few times in the past really...”

Tral furled his brows in confusion. What kind of genius went around announcing that he was evil. One would think that if one were an evil genius then one would be more secretive about it. It never did any good to tell the world one was evil. It would put those on the side of justice on their guard and other villains certainly couldn’t be trusted with such information. In reality, Jack’s introduction did little more than impress that he was neither evil nor a genius. 

“Well there are a few other problems,” The black mage continued. “First, it seems the people who brought us to this island strictly control how much power that is given us. I have the knowledge of six levels of spells and yet I am relegated to only being able to cast the weakest of fire spells. Second, I have yet to find someone on this island that is able to sell spells compatible with my world. And third, I don’t know the gil to star conversion rate.”

“Wait...” His head turn was rather over exaggerated at this point. “...Really? I never knew! I don’t feel different!” He started looking at random areas on his body, then when he was finished with that he moved his goggles close to his face to take a quick gander at them. Every thing seemed normal, well, normal for Jack any way. ...But then again, Jack had no magical expertise except for his technological intelligence, and since that wasn’t true magic it wasn’t hindered whatsoever. Though his focuses shifted from himself to the mage yet again after that tiny moment of wonder. “Yeah, it tends to be like that. I haven’t found anyone who knows about Shen-Gong-Wu here myself! It took me a while to get used to the weird currency myself...”

Jack went to pat the magician gently on the shoulder, giving him a genuine look of sympathy. “Sorry to hear about the whole spell thing, you sure you can’t find a way around or experiment?”

This person seemed very sure of himself. With his red hair he kind of reminded Tral of the fighter who was one of his fellow Warriors of Light. There were some obvious differences. This person was smaller for one and he wore a weird headband that must serve some purpose but it certainly wasn’t for protection. He also didn’t have a sword or ax and there was no way his fighter friend would be caught dead without his sword or a dagger at the very least. Personality wise, they seemed quite similar.

“My name is Tral and yes I’m a black mage,” he introduces himself. If he was to give instructions then they would need to know each other’s names. “As for new mages it takes a lot of hard work and a certain innate intelligence to aspire to learning the basics of magic. And once these basics are learned you must then raise the funds to afford to pay a tutor to teach you a spell. These can get to be quite expensive.”

Oh right, introductions! That was an important thing, how could Jack forget?

“Jack Spicer - evil boy genius!” He said with a grin, not even giving a thought to whether the mage would be fearful about him being evil or not. After all, he did want it to be known to everyone where he sided! He listened as Tral explained the mechanisms of magic, it seemed easy. He had the brains for it however money? Now that was a problem...  He didn’t have his rich parents to depend on, nor did he have a job just yet. Usually he’d have to scavenger around for money or parts for his precious Jack-Bots.The more he thought about it, he realized that he really should try to search for one. Now the next question he wondered... He was going to ask this one out loud.  “How much do they usually cost?”

Tral’s cheeks burned with embarrassment. He was glad this stranger didn’t seem upset with him but the mortification of almost hurting someone with a spell like some wet nosed rookie caster was beyond the pale. Control had been drilled into him. He may not remember his life from before his quest with the other Warriors of Light had started but he remembered in his very bones the discipline and mental fortitude he had exuded to become the mage he was today. He shook his head self disparagingly. More correctly, the mage he had been before being brought to this world.

“I was conducting an experiment,” he told the poor passerby. “And I am quite sorry that you were caught in the crossfire. You see, the spell I had cast was a simple sleep spell, but the people who brought me here took my abilities to cast it away from me. I had thought that will enough concentration and the correct forms I could cast it but it seems that the rules of physics no longer apply when it’s against the will of these beings. The spell was directed at the rock because I didn’t want to hurt someone in case of an undesired consequence.”

“Hey, it’s cool!” Jack said with a grin, “Even if you did, I don’t think it’d take me down! I can deal with a lot, and I do mean a lot.” After all, he did have some pretty good stamina. He’s dealt with a variety of different attacks; both physical and with Wu themselves and always turned out okay in the end. He could also trust this guy, he seemed modest and ... Wait, so this guy was a magician? It dawned on Jack the more the other mentioned his magical expertise, this guy definitely did magic! He could probably learn a lot from him! Or so, Jack hoped. “So you do magic? Any tips and tricks about starting out?”

Tral was in a small park near his apartment in the Golden Ward. There was a very specific reason for this. He’d almost burned down his apartment a few days ago and now his roommates would no longer allow him to practice magic inside. He couldn’t help but feel a bit of the injustice of it. Sure he caught a curtain on fire but it was put out very quickly and, surely they knew it wasn’t intentional. He did explain he was trying to cast TMPR, not FIRE, but to no avail. 

Perhaps a level 2 spell was just too much right now. He knew he’d been told he only would have access to FIRE right now but figured with enough practice he could relearn to cast his old spells. All of his forms and incantations were correct, however, and the wrong spell came out. Maybe if he tried casting SLEP, another level 1 spell, he’d have better luck. 

To be safe he was going to cast in on a rock in case another FIRE spell came out. His current FIRE spell didn’t have enough power to harm a rock. It couldn’t even properly burn down a curtain. SLEP was an easy spell. He carefully went through the forms and cast the spell. 

Right at the release of his spell a young person walked near the rock. Sure enough the rock absorbed the spell with minimal damage but the sudden pyrotechnics had probably startled the innocent by-standard. 

Tral rushed up to the poor boy to make sure he was alright, “I’m so sorry. I didn’t see you there. I hope that you’re ok.”

Jack had been on a mindless stroll, humming along to a song as he paced across the park. Just as he was about to step beside this rock, he had quickly leaped back as he watched the unknown energy throw itself onto the rock. Wow - now that was freaky!  He only knew of very few back at his place that’d be able to control magic and elements; and that was Wuya or those Xiaolin losers... He really hoped that wasn’t the case - that was really something he didn’t need right now! He turned his head to the voice to hear that nope, this wasn’t from someone he knew, but instead it was...A wizard? Well, this was a strange turn of events.  Though at least he knew he wasn’t being targeted by anyone he knew back home now and he was completely out of harms way, right?

“Yeah, I’m fine...” He said, fixing his gaze back on the rock. “But why did you attack that rock?”

“…You were trying to push me into this hole?” Promosis turned around fully, staring down at Jack with his large pale eyes and vacant expression. “That was a poor decision.” Not that he was going to retaliate, he just thought there were more efficient and less dangerous ways to explore the possibilities of the void.

“We’ve been told that this hole leads to a fading death or penalties to our abilities. Since there is no way for us to explore it safely now, I suggest you observe from a distance or stay away completely.” 

“Y...Yeah!” Jack gulped, “Got it!” He flashed a nervous smile, he had to admit, that stare made him a little more anxious. Maybe it was his fault for getting himself into this, yes. But he still couldn’t help but try to ask:

“Also... Could you stop staring at me like that? I...It’s kinda giving me the creeps!”

you look to your FIDUSPAWN PAL, who has mostly been minding its own business. you suppose it would be unfair to it to drag it along with your plans, especially considering that it’s so LATE AT NIGHT and it really didn’t ask to be brought along for a revolution. 

of course, it would be counterproductive to take it on a walk and stretch its legs, then subsequently de-summon it back into its OOGONIBOMB. you figure you will do the RESPONSIBLE PET OWNER thing.

“Yeah, I don’t mind at all. That’d be perfect!” After all, nobody would be spying on them as they talk about their plans there, right? Well, maybe except for some roommates. But Jack could always say they’re talking about one of those table top roleplays if there’s any suspicion, and if more people wanted to join? Well, that’d be even better!  “Lead the way, Tavros!”

“…Sorry. I phrased myself too harsh there.” Stepping on one’s source of comfort is never good, after all. Unless said comfort derives from making other suffer, that is. “Point is, you can extend yourself beyond your robots. If - and I put a big if here - by some reason you ever feel unable to rely on them, it’s important to have other people to rely on.”

“But you don’t have to do all of that immediately. Friendship takes a long time to cultivate, just like self-care. Which you seem to need some of, by the likes of it.” He chuckles, before leaving a big yawn.

“Oh well, I have to go now. See ya!” With a wave of his hand, Battler starts turning into several golden butterflies, which dissipate away with the wind.

All Jack could do now is stare bewildered at the butterflies, talk about a weird magic trick! He muttered aloud to himself, 

“Butterflies? Really?! What a weirdo! What is he? A magician?!”

“Wouldn’t it be hilarious if they died?”

“Uh... maybe?”

“But that’s kinda pushing it- wouldn’t a prank be funnier? Like I dunno, something like the whoopee cushion trick.”

“Such a nice man we ripped off there.”

“Oh, I know right! I think we snagged a few hundreds off of him! Gotta love the rich!”

“Okay, okay! I get it! I messed up! But your boopity shmoople talk is making me even more stressed!”
