brain: people won't tell me what the fucking problem was, thus I want to die
great.
There's something serene about sitting there at the edge of the cliff.
You're not gonna jump because there are too many chains on you, but the feel like the choice is right there if you need it is freeing, and it's kind of grounding.
Clearly I should just fucking kill myself.
I don't love you anymore.
why can't I forget you.
I feel like I can finally kill myself without worrying about you anymore.
It’s both lonely and freeing.
Goodbye. I loved you. So, so much. I will remember you but try to move on.
"Did you know broken vases can still break?" "What are you talking about, you fool?" "It still bleeds on my skin. The remainder of you is still here." He opens his mouth, closes it. He smiles. "Then bleed it all out. Until the wound closes."
I sit there on a lonely dock under the cold moonlight hoping for your gaze and warm hand I hold a tiny flower in my hands, all that I have left. I hope that echo from the seashell was your voice.
so I wait for no one in an empty house. till one with a key finds me and lives in me. till then my windows ache.
I sit here upon the soil as my eyes empty and my heart grows cold.
I will become a tree.
as the birds sing, no one will remember a whisper.
I hope to be at least an echo in the back of your mind.
I hope my roots grasp you and leave you with a curse.
“I wanted to die that day, and I hoped you would remember me.”
Neku's admiring the Udagawa mural, when he senses Joshua's vibe behind him.
With his arms crossed, at the bottom of the stairs.
Joshua slowly climbs the steps, as Neku's turned to face him.
Neku's impressed; what did Hanekoma-san say to get him out here?
He smiles, and turns back to the mural.
"Hey," Neku begins. "Kind of the worst place I could've picked for myself to talk to you here, but at the end of the day it still felt right."
Joshua puts a strand of hair behind his ear.
"How strange."
"It is. Pretty sure you gave me PTSD here. But I refuse to let you ruin my favourite spot for me, so."
Joshua at least has the decency to hide his smile at that before Neku punches him for it.
"Why do you insist on cutting yourself out of my life from hereon?"
"...I'm the Composer, Neku."
"What rule have you not already broken?"
"Fair enough. But we should make our goodbyes here--"
"No."
Neku's hand grasps his wrist.
"...?"
"Josh. I want you to be there. I've missed years of my life. I'm happy the have the others there with me as I try to get my life back, but I need you. To be there. Please."
Joshua's expression is pained.
"Why? I'm the one who ripped your life from you."
"And you're also part of the reason I'm living any life worth living at all."
"Neku, I can't."
"Why not?" Why do you look so pained?
"Because, Neku. I don't just want to be your friend."
Neku kisses him.
Clumsily, then desperate when it deepens.
When they break away, Josh is wide-eyed and disbelieving. They're both flushed.
"Then just say that."
"Neku, if you're making some kind of compromise to make me stay, then.."
"My feelings for you are real."
What?
"I don't know. I can't explain it either. You heard me, right? When I spoke to you the week after you brought me back first."
Joshua nods.
"Then you should know you mean a lot to me."
"Neku." Joshua says his name, with the weight of the world. Their foreheads meet. "Words can't express it."
Neku looks up to him, at his downcast eyes, fondness so abundantly clear in his eyes.
"You mean the world to me, Neku."
Every word drips with that same fondness.
"I was conflicted. I wanted to erase the city. But you were proof that the people in this city still had hope, that they could change, that there was more.
"But above all, for me... your brilliance became a symbol for Shibuya to me.
"If there were still you, then to me... at least I would still have that piece of the world to me."
Joshua ran a hand through the ginger hair behind his ear.
Neku's heartbeat was loud in his chest.
"There's a lot to this city, Neku. I had stopped looking, until you changed how I saw things. To be honest, I was still conflicted. I had almost given up..."
Joshua kissed him again. Then stay nestled close.
"I didn't push you away because you meant so little to me. I pushed you away and kept you locked away safe precisely because you mean everything to me."
Neku blushed, expression soft. His arms wrapped around Joshua in an embrace.
"Then, I'm glad that's settled."
"Is it?" The road ahead was the foggiest from here.
"Yeah. Just pretend you're dating another Reaper. Don't you make the rules?"
Joshua giggles, affectionate.
Their relationship cemented in words washes over him in relief.
Feelings swell in his chest. It overwhelms him with a lingering disbelief that such a thing could possibly happen.
And yet, Neku's hand was warm in his.
Neku: Did you just hang up on me??
Neku: Hey!
Neku: Are you seriously mad just because of this?
He turns off his phone.
--
"He's not responding."
"He does that."
Neku crosses his arms and frowns.
"I'm sure he thinks it's for the best. You've got your life back now, kid. The boss hates meddling any more than this."
"He should've thought about that before storming into my life and dismantling it to pieces."
"Hey, kid."
"?"
"Maybe it's best you let this one go. Your places in life are a worlds apart now, and you lost three years. You're at the height of your youth. Enjoy it while it lasts."
"I... You're right. But... I can't. He's important to me."
Hanekoma is silent for a moment, before he continues.
"Phones. I'm sorry to say this, kid. But your friendship isn't what he needs right now, and it wouldn't be good for either of you. I'd say to give him time, but I don't think he'll ever get over it, so I think it's best to give him the space he needs until he's ready to be your friend someday."
Neku's head drops.
"What's that supposed to mean...?"
Hanekoma sighs. He doesn't want to lie to the kid, but it's not his place to tell. However, it's best for the kid to move on quickly.
"Don't take it personally. You mean a lot to him than you know. He's not shutting you out to punish you, kid. He just thinks this is what's best for you. Please, for both your sakes, just live your life to its fullest. If you still feel this way in a few years, come back and I'll drag his ass out here myself."
"I..."
He feels sorry for Neku. But that's just how it is.
A sadness fills Neku.
"I think I have feelings for him."
Hanekoma nearly drops the mug he was drying.
He fixes his glasses.
"Well, that certainly changes things."
"Wh--"
Hanekoma barks a laugh. "In that case, I'll take care of it, kid."
Neku messages him via the RNS days after returning to life.
He asks questions.
And he asks
"Are you coming?"
It's more than he expects.
"Reapers can live in the RG fine. What's so different?"
But it's not what he had hoped for.
No... What he really wanted was for Neku, the man he loved, to free him.
He wanted to be gone.
He wanted to no longer be here.
He supposes, if Neku loved him, perhaps. Perhaps he'd have something to hold onto.
But...
"I want to see you."
Neku's voice is soft, over the phone. Joshua can hardly believe he heard it.
"Why... Neku, it almost sounds like you miss me."
"What's wrong with that?"
Don't you have her already? What do you still want from me?
He feels like crying.
He hangs up.
He sits there on his throne, in his empty hall. The loneliness is crushing. His love is omnipresent yet inconsequential; the boy's made his mind. He's fairer, but she is kinder, lovelier... so many things he is not.
He's so sure someone could take his place now and nothing would really matter--no, he knows it's not true. The city needs a Composer that no one can provide.
He could kill himself again, and this time erased for good.
It would be releasing.
He hopes Neku would remember him even a little.
He thinks about the one man he trusted before this, who did betray him.
He had the best interests at heart for the city, but not for him. He supposes a bigger person would be forgiving, but he can't help but just feel... hurt.
And it's his own fault.
He is lost.
them: "what if I just quietly left"
what if I just quietly left from life
what if I left a suicide note for real.
the despair is so deep, it's almost laughable, the idea that I could've been anything but the despair itself.
