Aaaaaand there it is. First confirmed USA case of Cochliomyia hominivorax (primary screwworm / new world screwworm) that wasn't from traveling abroad. https://www.aphis.usda.gov/news/agency-announcements/usda-confirms-presence-new-world-screwworm-united-states The effected animal is a calf in Zavala County, which is South West of San Antonio and North of Laredo.

I know A&M has a taskforce set up already, another entomologist with grant funding to study the issue (and lab renovations), and the Kerrville lab is actively working on the problem as well. My own university has sent out some internal memos about the issue, and I've been coordinating with some colleagues on it myself. But it's here. Which means we're in for a ride.

There are many things going on politically that are frustrating, but something that I find even more frustrating is how telegraphed the trajectory we’re currently on was and continues to be.

Roughly two years ago, there was a family member that I outlined how exactly this was going to happen.  How certain minorities were going to be labeled as being intrinsically criminal, and how this would lay the groundwork for future atrocities.

I pointed to specific language in Project 2025; Republicans literally spelled out what they were planning to do in advance.

I was ignored.

I’m not sure what it takes to get our fence-sitting “allies” to care, they might never…

…but given enough time and how bad things eventually get, they’ll say they did.

RIP Marjane Satrapi, author of the amazing graphic novels Persepolis about living during the fundamentalist revolution in Iran in the 70’s and 80’s. She also created the animated movie based on the graphic novels, which is where these gifs come from.

This is a perfect time to read the brilliant and unforgettable graphic novel(s) Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, about growing up in Iran during and after the Iranian Revolution, and the rise of the oppressive theocracy that persists to this day.

Both graphic novels are available free online (Persepolis vol. 1, Persepolis vol. 2)

There are people who support the death penalty but oppose the killing of Brian Thompson.

This is all the proof you need that the death penalty is about state power and not about justice or crime prevention.

If there exists a subset of people who deserve to die for the harm that they've caused others, how is it anywhere near possible for Brian Thompson to not be in that subset of people? What possible crime could someone commit that would make them worse than Brian Thompson? He killed more people than any serial killer or mass shooter. The only difference is that his weapon of choice was paperwork instead of a gun or a knife.
