Kraken has been successfully distracted by Underwater Disco Ball (literally)

Side-note: starting to understand why the filter is there. There are a lot of scenes that happen in the dark / at night, and this seems to help enhance the few light areas in those scenes. Things are still a bit tough to completely see in those scenes, but it is helpful enough to get the gist of what's going on, which is (unfortunately) more than I can say for some North-American shows and movies today.

Good news: spiders defeated. And despite the Monster Warriors not having helmets, nobody knows who they are yet (just that they're a team of teens).

Bad news: the city's government wants to spend a ton of tax dollars to go tough on crime, particularly teen crime, so that's probably gonna get in the way of their future kaiju fights.

Anywho, that's the end of episode 1! Feel free to share your thoughts, and we can have a neat discussion about it.

Okay, so apparently when Klaus makes one of his monster movies come to life, it does more than make the monster real.

In the movie, firefighters were attacked by the spider, and then Tabby got a call from her dad saying that he was struggling to fight a fire at the industrial waste centre. So naturally, the protags to over there to try to save the day. Except once they're almost there, she gets another call from her dad, asking what he should cook for dinner, because he's safe at home and it's his day off.

And they decide to keep going toward the spider anyway?!

Spiders! There's 2 of them now:

To defeat the monster, the squad must use the power of:

DVD rental stores

So this is Kreeger, the guy who runs this DVD store (which may specialize in monster movies, considering the display of monster masks he has in the store).

He ends up handing them an old C-toku (Capital City toku) about giant spiders, which was produced by none other than Klaus back in the day.

While nobody here knows the giant spider in the city is made by Klaus, Luke decides it'll be good idea to give the movie a watch. This is probably gonna be recurring situation.

Unfortunately for us, the squad are not fans of toku, and think none of this makes sense.

Except Luke, who is starting to put together the puzzle pieces (there's not really a logic explained to how to connects the dots, but still)

The only thing he doesn't know is what to do about the situation. But luckily everyone else is able to figure that out: Tabby makes some laser guns out of vacuum cleaners, Antonio manages to make a monster tracker, and Vanka has made protective suits for them.

Anywho, Tabby just made a gun out of duct tape, a coffee maker, and some other random stuff.

So on one hand: Vanka is able to use the gun Tabby made to defend the group from the spider.

Unfortunately, now Klaus knows there's somebody is a really conspicuous purple car trying to hurt his monster creations.

Tabby (while she, Vanka, Antonio and Luke are driving that car on some tree-lined dirt road at night): Luke are we totally lost?

Luke: Yeah, I'm afraid we are :/

Once again, a relatable rural Ontario feeling

Luke: I think the guy who owned (the coach house he's living in) before was a scientist

buddy, if it turns out this guy was Klaus--

So the quad decide that, since they are supposed to do a spider-related project, and this giant spider is in the news, it wouldn't be procrastinating if they took a drive to the crime scene and take a look.

Anywho, here's Tabby's dad:

Green flags: he's a firefighter; he was near the scene of the kaiju attack (presumably to help save people) and survived

Red flags: what kinda nickname is "tabby cat"

Anywho, this stuff got on his car (truck?) in the kaiju encounter (probably the spider's webbing)

So we're less than 5 minutes in and so far:

new mayor

we've established this town is usually quiet

Klaus summoned a giant spider that scared a cop, causing a chemical-and-toxic-waste-related explosion in a warehouse on the outskirts of "Capital City" (which is clearly neither Ottawa or Toronto, but does have the vibes of a smaller Ontario town)

and now it's the next morning at the local highschool and the students have to do a project on spiders:

Everybody meet Antonio, the original toku Antonio and (judging by this scene) friend to bugs everywhere.

Did I mention this aired in the mid-2000s? I think he and Mutsuki should be penpals or something.

We also meet another main character of the show, Tabby. We get some quick background info: she's class president and captain of multiple school sports teams. And while she says she's bad at science, it seems like this is only limited to biology, since she's pretty good at building stuff (she could probably become an engineer or inventor of sorts).

Antonio, meanwhile, is the exchange student who has an excellent memory. So far, they're only dealing with small spiders for a class project rather than the big kaiju spider, but they're a good team so far.

So we're basically getting introduced to all the main characters in a sort of fusion of telling stuff and showing character traits. We meet Vanka next:

It seems that her main traits so far are that she's very well-versed in the school's rules and regulations, but she's also good at surprising people by moving fast.

I'll admit, I am kinda uncomfy at how they partly demonstrate this by basically having her pickpocket one of Tabby's building tools, but for now, the "very focused on the rules" things cancels it out. We are only a few minutes into the first episode, though, so I am cautious of how the writers will write her.

And here we have Luke:

We'll probably get more explanation about him in a bit. We technically saw him first in a different scene, but he's the last one to meet up with the rest of the main squad.

So back to Luke: his thing is that he's the new guy in town. And also his parents are rich philanthropists (who invented the grocery-cart coin dispenser?!) so he's living on his own.

The mayor of Capital City (the place where the show takes place): we're gonna make Capital City--

The mayor: --the nicest! the friendliest! The most neighbourly city in all the world

Mysterious guy who just broke out of one of Canada's many retirement homes: "I need to harness the power of the cosmos!"

Local extra-chill hardware store dude: Okay? Uh, where do we start, uh... bathroom fixtures and electrical?

To be brutally honest, there's a ton I don't remember about this. I haven't watched this in over 15 years. So let's see how it goes!

they really said, the science is made up and the weapons don’t matter. no, LITERALLY:

they home-brew all their kit from junk and seconds from the hardware store, it’s great.

also, everything is shot in super soft focus, so it looks like vintage softcore porn

the show being about teenagers, ofc all the adults are fuckin’ useless, if not outright hostile. it’s a common trope, but in this show, that doesn’t mean it’s boring or cliché.

Mayor Mel literally hands the team a permission slip that says, ‘Give these handy kids whatever they want, signed, The Mayor’.

this show has everything:

mad movie director as the villain

monster of the week

obstructive bureaucrats

high school hijinks

aliens

time travel
