Just a quick post to thank u all for following me 🥹 it has been a while since i’ve been active in a fandom like mota and i’ve had such a fun beautiful time everyone is so lovely and talented and im super grateful for this little community ❤️

I love love love love salt drops so much. Its so so well written and im enjoying every second of reading it. I was wondering is there a specific story or book that inspired it? The characterization is absolutely stunning

Believe it or not...the inspiration is The Narrow Road To The Deep North

but like, obviously not a direct inspiration. the subject matter and tone is far far different. Specifically it was this song from the soundtrack which also plays in the trailer a bit:

This song really really stuck with me, it's so rich and yes it's meant to be a sad song (given the name, the way it's used.the overall TONE of this show is absolutely Brutally depressing) but the more I listened to it the more I felt this underlying peace...longing...something about it also felt almost comforting to me. And I wanted to write a story that felt like this song. Both the melancholy and that comfort. So I was like okay. what to i see when I listen to this song, what colors and moods does it make me feel? sensations? The color gray. the cold. soreness. hands on a rope. salt spray. water. a beach on a cold winter day.

In the Deep Road, the jungle is also a Character. It has a heavy, omnipresent, constant presence. Every scene in the jungle is announced by an absolute cacophony of birdsong and animal calls until it becomes almost stressful to listen to. The ocean in Salt Drops plays a similar, though slightly less sinister role.

Obviously some influence came from Rose of Nevada trailer dropping riiight when I was in this creative process but it is entirely possible that I would have done it all on my own lol.

I think also John reading The Hobbit is part of it.

regarding caustin. i love the idea of austin going to watch callum's movies all by his lonesome. he gets all bundled up and goes to a morning showing just to avoid any chance of being spotted, maybe wears a hoodie that was cal's. he sees the dua nespresso ad before the movie and smiles. fitting. he'd have to tell callum about that later. he always sits through the credits, mostly to let the other movie goers leave first, but his mind inevitably is one to wander.

austin wonders what it might be like if he had been able to commit to whatever it was they had going on while they filmed mota. if he'd be watching this movie with callum at his side, cal laughing at himself on screen saying "we should go and i'll just tell you what happens at home, yah?". what life might be had austin been more responsive to texts, less avoidant. everything works out for a reason though....everyone ends up where they're meant to. with who they're meant to.

callum was bigger than life, austin sees it on the screen in his movies....sees it from the back row of callum's big beautiful wedding.

scented candles are comforting and nice, sweet coffee drinks and black coffee drinks are both valid, romcoms are called “feel good” for a reason and you can watch them to feel happy it’s not a crime, decorate your room with fairy lights, drink hot cocoa with marshmallows, listen to that cd that everyone talks about and that you hear playing in the Starbucks all the time, popular things become popular because a lot of people like them and it’s ok to also like those popular things it doesn’t make you boring. I could go on but you know what I mean.

your interests and simple pleasures are meant to entertain you, not meant to make you look entertaining to others.

if you enjoy Basic™ things then embrace that enjoyment. that’s for you. enjoy it.
