What I imagine the casting for twoe went like is that they sat there like. ok we need a guy to have an ""evil"" boss and and to get weirdly emotionally attached to said boss even tho they're technically on opposite sides and also said boss has a weird connection to the guy's actual love interest and it's complicated and in the end he wants to protect said boss but it's a losing matter and it's all fucked up. Then they looked at jcw's role in k2 and were like YUP we need this but make it gay. And I respect that a lot

gangnam b side is such an interesting phenomenon to me because its short length means a lot of shit is kinda brought up but never elaborated on and leaves tons of room for interpretation. all that to say, for an entire year, i've thought about the relationship between gilho and madam baek and developed far too many snapshots filling the years they were both at the arcade and i've developed so many headcanons they might as well be my OCs at this point. Gilho as a whole has so many traits and habits and experiences peeking out in the source material but it's all scratching the surface even compared to the other characters and you can do so much with that I literally cannot get this character out of my head ever. I have created so much shit about this random ass pimp from an 8 episode show that's mid at best (i say this affectionately) but also had such a killer performance (the never ending jcw bias) i am actually haunted. and the best part might be that i have not shared any of this elaborate mess anywhere and this show has 0.5 fans anyway

Will anyone hear me out if I say Kwon Hyuk is Joowon's (albeit not actually evil) version of Kang Jinmook.

Hyuk heavily undermines his own abilities and lets himself appear as innocent, specifically under hkh. If you look closely, you can see he's actually quite cunning and purposely puts on this almost naive front. Just like kjm does to hide his true nature.

Furthermore, kjm takes care of Dongsik's mother where Dongsik couldn’t, to the point she recognizes kjm better, as if taking Dongsik's place as "the better son". Meanwhile Hyuk inserts himself into the Han family and plays to every string of hkh and replaces Joowon as "the better son".

It's such a shame to me that Hyuk is such an underrated character because I truly think if you look closer, he's a lot more complex than you'd initially give him credit for. And I love analysing him so much

I still giggle everytime I think about how in both twoe and k2, jcw's characters get really intertwined with their questionable boss whom they reluctantly partnered up with for their own goals but then get so weirdly attached to and it's a whole mess. especially because their boss also has a really weird relationship with their love interest. and they can't save their boss and they shouldn't want to but they kinda want to but it's complicated and. and. and this specific trope needs to be studied bc the tension was insane in both cases and i miss these duos sooooo much fuck

the saddest tiny detail in gangnam b side for me is in that scene where gilho and jaehee figure out what to do after madam baek's death. because the first time we see that flashback in ep3, jaehee says "I trust you to protect us, Mr. Yoon."

But when he recounts that memory again in the final episode, jaehee's line is changed to "I trust you to protect us, Minseok."

It's such a small thing and honestly they didn't even have to change that line the second time, but it's like the person minseok didn't really exist to him anymore until jaehee calls him that one final time when she says her goodbye — which also serves as the catalyst for the viewer finding out his real name. and suddenly minseok is everywhere even though it's clear he doesn't want anyone (especially not K) to call him that except for her. it's like minseok died with jaehee but at the same time became more prominent than before. man i'm just sad

There's something to be said about how the main 4 of twoe all do (or don't) follow their fathers in one way or another.

Junmo tries so, so hard to be better but goes so deep in his downward spiral that he ends up so desperately distributing the very same drugs his father is getting his hands on. Wildly different intentions, of course, but the result is all the same.

Gicheol too is so different from his father in that he would never actively harm the people he loves and rather give himself up instead. He deserves a much better fate, but ultimately meets a similar end when he's betrayed and killed by the people closest to him just like his father was.

Euijeong, perhaps the least intense example of this given her slightly less messy family dynamic, still became a cop because it was just expected of her to follow in her father's footsteps, and part of what drives her actions is to prove that she's just as capable as her father (and her brothers).

Interestingly enough, Haeryeon is the only one who goes the opposite route. She continuously starts disobeying her father's orders and follows her own heart instead, and ultimately makes the smarter choice of fleeing so she doesn't get arrested along with her father.

In the final confrontation in twoe, it's so devastating to me that Gicheol's gun wasn't even cocked the entire time he pointed it at Junmo/Euijeong. He only cocked it when he pointed it at himself because he well and truly never had the intention of actually harming them.

On the other hand, Junmo had already cocked his gun the moment they both drew their weapons. Much to think about.

I rarely have enough inspiration to write for one fandom more than once, but I'm currently working on my third worst of evil fic......I don't know what they put in that show man it's been months and I just CANNOT get over these characters and the complexities of their bonds. I've truly rarely been this obsessed with a cast of characters.

I think it's such a shame that Gangnam B-Side is only 8 episodes because my god Yoon Gilho was such a killer character I needed to see more of him. I think abt him so much
